Kok-Boru - Kyrgyz National Game Kok boru also known as Ulak Tartysh is the national game of Kyrgyzstan, and also played in other central Asian republics such as Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. 'Kok boru' is in fact the traditional name for the game and literally means 'gray wolf'. Its origins likely go back centuries, even perhaps as far back as the days of Genghis Khan, harking back to the time when herds of cattle grazed in the steppes and mountains and the nomadic horseman had to protect their herds from the depredations of predatory wolves.

Alluu, Kyrgyzstan! Once upon a time two tribes lived peacefully on the shores of the sacred river Anisay (now Yenisey) in Siberia. Then one tribe wandered down South to Central Asia, while the second travelled North across the Bering Land Bridge and eventually reached Greenland. Some people may ask: how do you know for sure that it all happened exactly this way? I don't. But should this be a reason not to celebrate the Days of Kyrgyzstan in Uummannaq, Greenland this week? This is a traller for "Kyrgyzstan on Uummannaq" little film by Galya Morrell featuring the Days of Kyrgyzstan on Uummannaq Island in Northern Greenland. The yurtas in front of Issik-Kul Tonight we sleep inside a kyrgyz tent (yurta) in front of Issik Kul lake. The lanscape is wondeful: the tent is hidden in a sort of sand desrt and behind us the whiteness of the Tien Shan Range. Not far from us a beautiful muslim cemetery.

Equality of background and pattern, rythmical simplicity and expressiveness are characteristic of yourta, its ornament is completely decorative and monumental. Despite the comperativley monotonious motifs: kochkor mujuz horn, teke mujuz ibexs horn, kyal fancy, the principle of positive-negative disposition creates the sensation of carpet pattern richness in spite of its plain character and limited colour gamut. Mosaic technique, based on stitching of pattern and background cuttings deprives it of complicated and tone correlations. But the colour becomes more expressive, giving gay colouring and red-dark blue, brown orange, brown white clear colour correlations to shyrdak. But first it was thick felt. Kijiz. And not only as an outward yourta covering a safe shelter of nomads from winter hard frost and summer heat, but as an ornamented kijiz, a carpet, the main component in diversity of yurta attires, as folk artistic traditions which created it in the course of many ages, as a saturated whole aesthetic environment. There is no another such a thing in the folk decorative art, where design principlesof the Kyrgyz national ornament, its distinctive features are so clearly and fully manifested. What is shyrdak? Felt has been made and used by Central Asian nomadic peoples for over two and a half thousand years. Traditionally, in countries such as Kyrgyzstan, nomads lived in yurts made of and decorated with felt, migrating from winter ...
