Cholent, for hundreds of years the traditional Sabbath-day meal for observant Jews in many countries, is a food for which there is no standard recipe; its ingredients are as diverse as the places where Jews have lived. A slow-cooked stew containing meat, vegetables, potatoes, beans and spices, it is one of the quintessential Jewish comfort foods and a dish that many look forward to from Sabbath to Sabbath. Cholent in its various forms evolved from a combination of Jewish law and economic circumstances. Jewish law prohibits cooking on the Sabbath, from sunset on Friday to sunset on Saturday. In order to have a hot lunch on the Sabbath, Jews prepare the cholent a one-pot dish before the start of the Sabbath and let it cook overnight. Today, a slow cooker or crock pot is often used. Historically, in the Jewish towns of Europe, a community oven or the oven of the local baker was used. Economic circumstances dictated ingredients when meat was scarce or too expensive the cholent would contain more starch, usually beans and potatoes.   • Yeshiva University's Maccabeats CD release The student a cappella group, The Maccabeats, celebrated the release of their first CD, "Voices from the Heights," with a free concert. Despite the late hour, the concert was attended by over 600 fans, including students from both the Wilf and Beren campuses as well as from other colleges and high schools. The group, led by Julian Horowitz since its inception three years ago, has made a name for itself throughout the tri-state area. They sang in Madison Square Garden at the YU Commencement in 2009 and they were honored collectively at last years Hanukkah Dinner. The new album is full of catchy, original arrangements and features special guest, President Richard M. Joel, singing as lead vocalist on one of the tracks. After the concert, The Maccabeats aired the debut of their music video with their cover version of Matisyahu's hit song "One Day" at an after-party in Belfer.

  • Jerusalem Police Raid Numerous Yeshivas for Fake ID Fraud Israel - Jerusalem Police on Sunday raided the offices of three ultra-Orthodox non-profit organizations, which operate yeshivas in the capital and nearby towns of Beit Shemesh and Beitar Illit. Officers believe that the organizations embezzled millions from the State. The haredi institutions are suspected to have produced fake IDs in order to receive monthly stipends from the Education Ministry for alleged yeshiva students. Six suspects were arrested and four others were brought in for questioning. More than a 1000 fake ID cards were discovered in the raid, along with computers and machines for printing and laminating the cards, and other equipment. A preliminary hearing for a number of men detained during the raid has been scheduled for Monday. Police officials said they monitored the organizations in question for quite some time. "The organizations presented a false record of hundreds of students who attend each yeshiva, and received money for these students," one official explained. "In reality, only a few dozen students attended." Police are also investigating the location laundering the embezzled money, and expect to make more arrests in the case.
