  • A Widow Bird (No. 3) from Six Shelley Songs by Jason Thorpe Buchanan Six Shelley Songs by Jason Thorpe Buchanan were composed in the summer of 2008. Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822) wrote these poems between 1814 and his unexpected death in 1822, when he drowned at sea. He is known for having been expelled from Oxford for distributing a pamphlet entitled "The Necessity of Atheism". He was married twice, leaving his first wife shortly after having written Away!, later meeting Mary Shelley, soon to be author of Frankenstein and daughter of William Godwin, a literary figure whom Shelley idolized. He lost two of the three children he had with Mary Shelley between 1818 and 1819. His texts have been criticized for their seemingly abstract surface aesthetic, as well as being called "splendidly nebulous". With these six songs I have attempted to capture the essence of Shelley's writing and depict the well-crafted romantic imagery contained in these poems. I hope that in doing so I manage to show their "splendidly nebulous" nature in my music. A Widow Bird (1822) - PB Shelley A widow bird sate mourning for her love Upon a wintry bough; The frozen wind crept on above, The freezing stream below. There was no leaf upon the forest bare, No flower upon the ground, And little motion in the air Except the mill-wheel's sound. • Edward MacDowell: Four Little Poems, Op. 32 1 - The Eagle 2 - The Brook 3 - Moonshine 4 - Winter ----------------------------------- MacDowell (1861-1908) wrote this set of four short pieces in Wiesbaden, Germany in 1887 or 1888. He had been living there, teaching and composing, since 1883, the year after he had visited Liszt in Weimar. . This set - which MacDowell revised in 1906 - is really four miniature concert works, and it encapsulate many aspects of MacDowell's style. 'The Eagle' is prefaced by a poem of Tennyson: 'He clasps the crag with crooked hands; Close to the sun in lonely lands, Ringed with the azure world, he stands. The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls; He watches from his mountain walls, And like a thunderbolt he falls.' The music - written in the grand style of his sonata slow movements - is highly programmatic, almost balletic (note the depiction of the last line of the poem!). 'The Brook' depicts a poem by Bulwer-Lytton: 'Gay below the cowslip bank, see, the billow dances; There I lay, beguiling time - when I liv'd romances; Dropping pebbles in the wave, fancies into fancies.' The Dante Gabriel Rossetti prefacing 'Moonshine' is too long to reproduce here, but it depicts a weary tramp walking in the moonlight and being beguiled by the play of its reflected streaks. 'Winter' depicts the following Shelley poem: A widow bird sate mourning for her Love Upon a wintry bough; The frozen wind crept on above, The freezing stream below. There was no leaf upon the forest bare, No flower upon the ground, And ...

  • "To The Moon" No. 4 from Six Shelley Songs by Jason Thorpe Buchanan These six songs were composed in the summer of 2008. Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792--1822) wrote these poems between 1814 and his unexpected death, when he drowned at sea. He is known for having been expelled from Oxford for distributing a pamphlet entitled "The Necessity of Atheism." He was married twice, leaving his first wife shortly after writing "Away!," soon thereafter meeting Mary Shelley (of Frankenstein fame), daughter of William Godwin, a literary figure whom Shelley idolized. • "Malalotja Nature Reserve" Neilandchris's photos around Malalotja Swaziland, Swaziland A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Malalotja Swaziland, Swaziland by TravelPod blogger Neilandchris titled "Malalotja Nature Reserve". TravelPod is a company of TripAdvisor™. Neilandchris's travel blog entry: "Malalotja Nature Reserve, Swaziland, 2nd, 3rd & 4th October 2009 The following morning was damp and misty as we packed up the tents. We left at 8.00am and drove towards Mbabane where the weather conditions worsened. The by-pass road past Mbabane is a very steep climb and the mist really dropped down so that visibility was very poor. After Mbabane and before we reached the border post we turned off right on the main road towards Malalotja and Piggs Peak. Malalotja Nature Reserve is another Swaziland National Trust Commission Reserve and this is an outstanding camp. There were individual pitches beautifully set out; you would have to see them to appreciate the work gone into them. Each had its own braii/open fire, concrete table, and screened from other pitches by vegetation. Some were in more shelter than others, all with nice views of the mountains around. No electric, and a good clean ablution block with laundry and washing up facilities. The reception was a good walk away from the camp and there was a small shop selling basic supplies and firewood too. There are loads of walking trails to viewpoints, picnic sites and the falls, together with game and bird viewing. When we were there we were lucky to see some lovely flowers in bloom. There were ...
