  • CASUALTIES OF THE GULF OF MEXICO DISASTER: Beneath the Surface CASUALTIES OF THE GULF OF MEXICO DISASTER: Beneath the Surface Videography and song by Gale Mead Lead guitar: Eric McFadden. Tenor Sax: Federico Martinez. Carpets of crinoids - cousins of the sea-star - stretched their long limbs languidly into the current for morsels of planktonic food. Colorful tropical fish drifted among gracefully spiraling wire corals. Somber-faced grouper hovered warily while jacks and sharks cruised by, curious about the submersibles lights. Fifty miles south of Mississippi, I was the first human ever to lay eyes on the teeming, thriving, dazzling undersea metropolis that was Salt Dome Mountain. As rich and diverse as Texas Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary to the west, or Floridas coral reefs to the south, but a little deeper, and totally unexplored. It was July 29, 2002, and I was a submersible pilot with the Sustainable Seas Expeditions, a joint project of National Geographic and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, led by my mother, Dr. Sylvia Earle. Fishermen and oilmen have long known the Gulf of Mexico by what they could extract from it with their nets and their drilling rigs. We were there to study it from the inside out. Salt Dome Mountain is an unexpectedly shallow seamount rising from the depths of the Gulf of Mexico to within 200 feet of the surface. Its just south of the Mississippi coast, just north of where a raging gusher of oil now spews death and destruction with no end in sight. And no ...

  • Poetry Show #1: T. Hughes, Thought Fox and Why I Read Poetry Ratings and comments help YouTubers feel like they are not wasting their lives. *nudge* Why do people start reading poems? Are we all intellectuals? Do we have to understand them to enjoy them? Who knows or cares? This is how I started, aged 16... The poem is The Thought Fox by Ted Hughes: I imagine this midnight moment's forest: Something else is alive Beside the clock's loneliness And this blank page where my fingers move. Through the window I see no star: Something more near Though deeper within darkness Is entering the loneliness: Cold, delicately as the dark snow A fox's nose touches twig, leaf; Two eyes serve a movement, that now And again now, and now, and now Sets neat prints into the snow Between trees, and warily a lame Shadow lags by stump and in hollow Of a body that is bold to come Across clearings, an eye, A widening deepening greenness, Brilliantly, concentratedly, Coming about its own business Till, with a sudden sharp hot stink of fox It enters the dark hole of the head. The window is starless still; the clock ticks, The page is printed. -- Next Episode: Thomas Hardy, Mute Opinion and being quiet...
  • |-|E|_|_ !NT|-|EP@C!F!C 1 1968 Director John Boorman's typical bravado is somewhat muted in this WWII parable. Set in the Pacific in 1944, the film focuses on two combatants stranded on the same barren atoll: a Japanese naval officer (Toshirô Mifune) and a US marine pilot (Lee Marvin). At first the two men warily stalk each other, both revealing something by refusing to kill the other when the opportunity arises. At length the Japanese officer captures and harnesses the American, who ultimately escapes, returns, and ties up his opponent. The American finally releases his prisoner as both men grasp the pointlessness of their behavior, and a tacit truce develops between them, since neither can understand the other's language. After some scenes of mutually incomprehensible yelling and a bit of water torture, the Japanese man begins building a raft. The American's initial derision is replaced by an awareness that his cooperation would likely speed their departure and increase their odds of survival. In what is virtually a silent film, Boorman invokes his recurring "man against nature" theme, here reconfigured as a plea for human solidarity. Marvin is excellent, while Mifune is a virtuoso of the kind of physical acting the film requires, and Conrad Hall's camerawork does justice to the spectacular beauty of the Micronesian islands
  • Hong Kong Disneyland Fireworks This is the fireworks show from Saturday. Everyone loves to hate Hong Kong Disneyland. The media reviles the park and serves it up as tabloid fodder, reveling in an *** of cruel delight with every single hiring misstep and every missed attendance goal. Local citizens, with whom my conversations have yielded much anecdotal evidence, also have voiced their displeasure, mostly over the park's size - too small - and its demographics - too many mainlanders. So it was with these pejorative impressions, this cacophony of complaints simmering in my imagination, that I passed warily through the gates of the Magic Kingdom, in cautious expectation of unfulfilled promises and inexorable bores. What I got, however, to my pleasant surprise and veritable enjoyment, was an afternoon and evening spent in the company of great friends amidst all sorts of amusements, an outing that easily summited any acclivity of entertainment previously established in my mind. There were rides, lots of them, on which my friends and I spent much time frolicking like little children in whose hands are new toys. We actually spent more time on the rides than on the lines to board them, which surprised me, and added to the allure of the place. Every attraction, whether it was Space Mountain or Small World, whether it was the crazy tea cups or Pooh's dyslexic, whole-language reading adventure, was accessible without having to spend an inordinate amount of time waiting, and that's a good thing. We spent about ...
  • Burmese Refugees Warily Leave China Burmese refugees are returning home today after weeks of intense battling between government forces and a local militia. Refugees say their biggest concern is whether their businesses are still standing and if their homes have been looted. Burmas military-backed government says the situation has returned to normal. Twenty-six government troops or police are dead with 47 wounded. Eight insurgents are also dead. The conflict was triggered after Burmese officials deployed troops to the area to disarm insurgents. Tens of thousands have streamed over the border into China. The Chinese Communist Party has shown no eagerness to host the refugees for long. Returning residents crowd into trucks and buses that take them to the border crossing in Nansan; others come on foot, carrying blankets. [Li Xiaoquan, Refugee]: "After all, that is where my hometown is. Even when I die, I will have to return to my hometown. I want to go back to be reunited with my parents." [Liu Shurong, Shop Owner]: Of course, I am scared but I have no choice. If you don't go back and guard your shop, it would be looted. My neighbors have lost all their belongings. The things have all been looted. China is one of Burma's few diplomatic backers and faced pressure from Western governments over the military government's moves against pro-democracy campaigners. Many of the refugees say they are torn between a desire to return to family, businesses and homes, and fear of ill treatment by Burmese government troops.

  • Amazing Stonemasonry This is an ancient technique used by stonemasons all over the world, in this particular case a sawyer, who is warily cutting these rough blocks, to a required size, using nothing but a precise series of different-sized chisels and meticulous blows, notice how the thumping sounds play an important role in finding that perfect spot for the next hit, landing all the blows in the exact place, right on the vein of the rock, there is only one way to split such solid stone, and that is by finding and consistently hitting the vein, it is a tricky task that an experience sawyer will pull off in a matter of seconds. Notice how the stonemason carefully carves a clear-cut and well defined gap and after he shoves a shorter, yet broader chisel, to finally finish the job with some sledgehammer action. Sure enough all the accurate hits split open the solid rock, notice the precision of every single hit, and after each hit, the stonemason quickly twists the chisels before placing them in the next spot, finding this next spot is another difficult part of the job. This film was recorded in the Southeastern part of Brazil, in the state of Sao Paulo, this was an area first colonized by the Portuguese, and later by Italians, mostly likely this was a technique inherited from the first European settlers.
