  • And the band played Waltzing Mathilda In memoriam of thoses, anzacs, turks, frenchs who lost their lives in Gallipoli. The song "Waltzing Mathilda" is performed by the Pogues. When I was a young man I carried my pack And I lived the free life of a rover From the Murrays green basin to the dusty outback I waltzed my Matilda all over Then in nine*** fif*** my country said Son It's time to stop rambling 'cause there's work to be done So they gave me a tin hat and they gave me a gun And they sent me away to the war And the band played Waltzing Matilda As we sailed away from the quay And amidst all the tears and the shouts and the cheers We sailed off to Gallipoli How well I remember that terrible day How the blood stained the sand and the water And how in that hell that they called Suvla Bay We were butchered like lambs at the slaughter Johnny Turk he was ready, he primed himself well He chased us with bullets, he rained us with shells And in five minutes flat he'd blown us all to hell Nearly blew us right back to Australia But the band played Waltzing Matilda As we stopped to bury our slain We buried ours and the Turks buried theirs Then we started all over again Now those that were left, well we tried to survive In a mad world of blood, death and fire And for ten weary weeks I kept myself alive But around me the corpses piled higher Then a big Turkish shell knocked me arse over tit And when I woke up in my hospital bed And saw what it had done, I wished I was dead Never knew there were worse ...

  • Eric Bogle - The Band Played Waltzing Matilda ****Note added 25 April 2010: When I was asked to create this presentation for a Remembrance Day assembly, I didn't know how I would show an "anti-war" song at an event that is supposed to honour our veterans. At the same time, war and military conflict was such a distant concept for our students, I wanted to some how make history relevant to them, let alone an "Australian" song that most of the our middle school students have never heard. The more I listened to Bogle's words, the more I realized that this song was about more than a moment in history. It's about how history repeats itself and the great sacrifices that are made during war and how futile it all is if we fail to learn from our mistakes. Making the transition from B/W to full colour to coincide with Bogle's words "We started all over again," I wanted to show how war is part of our past, present and (unfortunately) future. Great sacrifices have been made because of war. Bogle asks "What are they marching for?" I say they are marching to honour those sacrifices. If any veteran is offended by this video, I truly do apologize. ************************* April 25 - ANZAC Day November 11 - Remembrance Day "Waltzing Matilda" is a very famous Australian folk song and a "Matilda" was the name given to the pack that Australian farm workers carried on their backs. I'm not sure when Rolf Harris recorded Waltzing Matilda, but I know he sang it on Sunday Night at The London Palladium in the sixties. Oh nearly forgot the lyrics ... Watzing Matilda lyrics ... some written by Rolf Harris ... namely the intro Spoken ( Waltzing Matilda is a song about an Australian Hobo I guess you'd call him. He wanders through the bush- land of Australia and he takes all his meager belongings wrapped up in an old blanket which is strung across his shoulders with an old piece of twine ... and this is called his swag. Hence the name swagman. Now affectionately or otherwise he refers to his swag as Matilda, its like his only companion as he wanders through the bush tracks ... he finds himself talking to it as if its a real person ... So the term Waltzing Matilda is nothing to do with dancing at all, it means in fact carrying this thing on your back through the long lonely stretches of the Australian bush... • ANZAC Legend Begins - And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda On 25 April 1915, the Anzacs (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) landed at a difficult and desolate spot on the Gallipoli peninsula and the Turks appeared to be ready for them, a defeat was inevitable, The Gallipoli campaign was a debacle, Military censorship prevented the true story being told but a young Australian journalist, Keith Murdoch (father of Australian newspaper tycoon Rupert Murdoch) smuggled the story about the scale of the Dardanelles disaster back to the Australian Prime Minister who sent it on to the British Prime Minister David Lloyd George, who was no friend of the British military establishment. It led directly to the dismissal of the British commander, Sir Ian Hamilton who never again was to hold a senior military position. The British Government ordered an evacuation. By day, the ANZACs kept up their attacks with more ANZACs observed to be landing - by night the force was withdrawn, broken only by sporadic rifle and gunfire. On 20 December 1915, the Anzac retreat was complete, unnoticed by the Turks who continued to bombard the Anzacs' empty trenches. On 9 January 1916, the Turks carried out their last offensive on Gallipoli, revealing only that the entire force had withdrawn without casualty. The evacuation was the Allies most successful operation in Gallipoli. A British Royal Commission into Gallipoli concluded that from the outset the risk of failure outweighed Its chances of success. The British had contributed 468000 in the battle for ...

  • (Tommy Emmanuel) Waltzing Matilda - Sungha Jung Sungha played 'Waltzing Matilda' arranged by Tommy Emmauel. "Waltzing Matilda" is Australia's most widely known bush ballad, a country folk song, and has been referred to as "the unofficial national anthem of Australia".[1] The title is Australian slang for travelling by foot with one's goods in a "Matilda" (bag) slung over one's back.[2] The song narrates the story of an itinerant worker, or swagman, making a drink of tea at a bush camp and capturing a sheep to eat. When the sheep's ostensible owner arrives with three police officers to arrest the worker for the theft (a crime punishable by hanging), the worker commits suicide by drowning himself in the nearby watering hole, and then goes on to haunt the site. The original lyrics were written in 1887 by poet and nationalist Banjo Paterson. It was first published as sheet music in 1903. Extensive folklore surrounds the song and the process of its creation, to the extent that the song has its own museum, the Waltzing Matilda Centre in Winton, Queensland.

  • Richard Thompson - Waltzing for Dreamers Oh play me a blue song and fade down the light I'm sad as a proud man can be sad tonight Just let me dream on, oh just let me sway While the sweet violins and the saxophones play And Miss, you don't know me, but can't we pretend That we care for each other, till the band reach the end One step for aching, and two steps for breaking Waltzing's for dreamers and losers in love One step for sighing and two steps for crying Waltzing's for dreamers and losers in love Now they say love's for gamblers, oh the pendulum swings I bet hard on love and I lost everything So don't send me home now, put a shot in my arm And we'll drink out old memories and we'll drink in the dawn And Mr Bandleader won't you play one more time For I've good folding money in this pocket of mine Oh, one step for aching, two steps for breaking Waltzing's for dreamers and losers in love One step for sighing, and two steps for crying Waltzing's for dreamers and losers in love Oh Miss, you don't know me, but can't we pretend That we care for each other, till the band reach the end Oh, one step for aching, two steps for breaking Waltzing's for dreamers and losers in love One step for sighing, two steps for crying Waltzing's for dreamers and losers in love Waltzing's for dreamers and losers in love

  • Operation Aloha - Waltzing Matilda It's like this: Operation Aloha happened because a man - one Christopher Wray-McCann, a photographer by trade - imagined that it could. Following months of scheming, he enlisted his closest musician friends - made during years of shooting live music on the road and at home in Los Angeles, CA - to drop their lives and their cell phones and hole up in tree houses in a quiet corner of paradise. The plan: bring instruments, microphones, just what could be carried in; then see what happens. What happened was fantastic. Inspired by jungle, ocean, and each other, and free from the constraints of their frenetic schedules and the expectations of their normal associations, the participants of Operation Aloha wrote and played and recorded for the better part of a month. They lived in very close quarters, cooked elaborate meals together, and reveled in the rare opportunity that good fortune had given them. From the accumulation of hours and hours of recorded music, a record has been born.

  • Joan Baez - And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda (See Lyrics below.) A song about a young Australian soldier maimed during the Battle of Gallipoli (1915) during the First World War; written by Eric Bogle in 1972. The paintings of Degas, Sargent, and the visual arts of Spadecaller, augment the song's theme. LYRICS: Now when I was a young lad I carried me pack And I lived the free life of the rover. From the Murray's green banks, to the dusty outback While I waltzed my Matilda all over. Then in 1915, my country said, 'Son, It's time you stop ramblin', there's work to be done.' So they gave me a tin hat, and they gave me a gun, And they marched me away to the war. And the band played 'Waltzing Matilda,' As the ship pulled away from the quay, Amidst the songs and the cheers, the flag waving, and tears, We sailed off for Gallipoli. And how well I remember that terrible day, How our blood stained the sand we call Suvla Bay We were butchered like lambs at the slaughter. The big Turkish shell caught me arse over head, And when I woke up in my hospital bed And saw what it had done, well, I wished I was dead Never knew there was worse things than dying. So I'll go no more 'Waltzing Matilda,' or through the green bush bars and wide For to hunt and tent peg a man needs both legs, No more 'Waltzing Matilda' for me. They gathered the injured, the wounded, the maimed, And they shipped us all back to Australia. The armless, the legless, the blind, the insane, Those proud wounded heroes of Suvla. And as our ship sailed into Circular ...
