Walkway Over the Hudson - Past, Present and Future Walkway Over the Hudson is a project which is turning the Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge, a 19th century engineering marvel, into the longest bridge walkway in the world. It is being hailed as the centerpiece for New York States 400th anniversary of Henry Hudsons famous voyage in 1609, up what is now know as the Hudson River. The gala opening ceremony will occur during the first weekend in October of 2009.

The Rhizotron & Xstrata Treetop Walkway stands in the Arboretum, between the Temperate House and the Lake. A path lined with examples of different timbers leads visitors below ground to the Rhizotron. Inside, an installation explains the relationships that exist between tree roots, the soil and organisms such as nematodes, beetles, woodlice and bacteria. On the floor is a mosaic inspired by the mutually beneficial relationships that exist between many plant roots and fungi. The 18-metre high, 200-metre walkway at Kew Gardens guides visitors around the crowns of lime, sweet chestnut and oak trees. Supported by rusted steel columns that blend in with the natural environment, it provides opportunities for inspecting birds, insects, lichen and fungi at close quarters, as well as seeing blossom emerging and seed pods bursting open. Things to look out for At the entrance to the Rhizotron and Xstrata Treetop Walkway are sculptures carved from tree trunks. The carvings illustrate microscopic elements of trees, and help explain how trees grow. Visitors learn, for example, that leaves have breathing pores shaped like lips and that tubes called phloem pump sap from leaves to fruits and roots. Remains Of First Temple Found Underneath Planned Walkway Lea During construction for a planned walkway that will connect to the Temple Mount, the Israel Antiquities Authority have uncovered the remains of an ancient city dating back the First Temple at a site located near the Western Wall. Archaeologists working at the dig discovered the remains hidden beneath a subterranean street dating back to the Roman period. Making My Own Brickform Mold Concrete Walkway What started out as a simple, "Oh, just lay down a few stepstones between the back porch and the gate" became this project. While shopping at Lowe's, I found these form molds in the concrete aisle, and bought two. Thought I'd give it a shot. I did it in 2 parts. For the back yard molds, I used a mixer. Mixing two bags at a time and then adding the color tint while still in the mixer. It has held up to Indiana winters well. This past summer, I did the walkway from the rear gate to the front gate. Walkway Over The Hudson River The Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge was built in 1888. At 6767 feet in length, it was the longest bridge in the United States at that time. An engineering marvel for its day, long freight trains crossed it for almost 100 years. In 1974 it was abandoned as a railroad bridge. Work began in 2007 to convert the bridge into the worlds longest, dedicated pedestrian bridge. To the right is an artists rendering of what it might look like when finished in October of 2009. The opening of the bridge, as a Walkway and bike path, will coincide with the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson having first sailed up the river which bears his name.
