  • Understanding Voodoo ~ Vodun Vodun or Vudun (spirit in the Fon and Ewe languages, pronounced [vodṹ] with a nasal high-tone u; also spelled Vodon, Vodoun, Voudou, Voodoo etc.) is a traditional organized religion of coastal West Africa from Nigeria to Ghana. Vodun is practiced by the Ewe, Kabye, Mina and Fon peoples of southeastern Ghana, southern and central Togo, southern and central Benin. Another source states: Voodoo is the Louisia version (and slightly different) of the Haitian religion, Voodoun. In Haiti, Voodoun evolved from traditional West African (today Nigeria, Ivory Coast and Cameroon, mostly) {entities}, a mix of them brought by the {enslaved} who were 'Christianized' force-ably. As the {enslaved} were Christianized, they called their tribal {entities} "Saints," but kept a lot of the traditional ways of worship the same. (At night, and in secret) Haiti was the first nation to be run by former {enslaved} , as they revolted successfully, and ran their former Masters out of the nation. The US was very afraid of this happening in it's own South, so all communication was cut off between Haiti and the US. This is why Louisiana Voodoo and Haitian Voodoun are so much different today. (They were out-of-communication for a century or so) General background: Vodun (aka Vodoun, Voudou, Voodoo, Sevi Lwa) is commonly called Voodoo (vû'dû) by the public. The name was derived from the god Vodun of the West African Yoruba people who lived in 18th and 19th century Dahomey. Its roots may go back 6000 years ...

  • vodun rcfs002 RexLeon&IrfanRainy Voodoo is a religion created for Hollywood movies, complete with "voodoo dolls", violence, bizarre rituals, cannibalism etc. The real religion, commonly called Vodou to differentiate from the Hollywood religion is practiced by over 60 million people worldwide and religions similar to Vodou can be found in South America. To understand the religion you must understand the history of Haitai, where the religion began. Slaves from South Africa brought their religion with them when they were forcibly shipped to islands in the West Indies. Vodun was actively suppressed during colonial times. Many Priests were either killed or imprisoned, and their shrines destroyed, because of the threat they posed to Euro-Christian/Muslim dominion. This forced some of the slaves to form Vodou Orders and to create underground societies. Vodou played a major part in the revolution against the French in Haitai. Vodun was again suppressed during the Marxist regime. However, it has been freely practiced in Benin since a democratic government was installed there in 1989. Vodun was formally recognized as Benin's official religion in 1996 and it is also followed by most of the adults in Haiti.
