The Velvet Underground: 'Venus in Furs' live January 1966 Video: The Velvet Underground filmed on 16mm by Jonas Mekas at the Annual Dinner of the New York Society for Clinical Psychiatry, Delmonico's Hotel, New York City, January 13, 1966. Also featuring Edie Sedgewick, Gerard Malanga and Andy Warhol. Originally included in the film 'Scenes from the Life of Andy Warhol'. Music: recorded by WNET TV at The Factory, New York City. First broadcast on 'USA Artists', February 7, 1966. This piece of footage has been released many times over the years, but always in drastically sped-up form, and with the video in mirror image - ie back to front. This version has been flipped and slowed down to half speed, which I think brings it back to roughly the original speed, using Windows Movie Maker. As the original footage is silent, I've dubbed a rendition of Venus in Furs from a contemporary TV appearance. It's clear from Malanga's whip-dancing and the Cale on viola/Sterl on bass line-up shown in the film that Venus in Furs is the song that they're playing here. For the sake of my sanity I've made no attempt to sync it up with what's going on in the footage! The footage is sourced from a high-quality .mov file available as a paid download from Jonas Mekas' site. The file also includes footage of the Velvets playing at the Dom and of Nico and Gerard Malanga dancing at Stephen Shore's party. I'd advise anyone who has enjoyed this Youtube clip to go to Jonas Mekas' site and download the original version. The link is here:

Velvet Underground & Nico 1966 All Tomorrow's Parties November 4, 1966 Valleydale Ballroom Columbus, Ohio. This is from my favorite boot the 2 CD 'IF IT'S TOO LOUD FOR YOU MOVE BACK!. It's a unedited version of this legendary recording. I added the Warhol film 'A Symphony of Sound' as a simple backdrop. Since 1986 I've had the famous Bernd Baierschmidt vinyl LP with Melody Laughter (28:02) and The Nothing Song (22:58) that came out in 1981. I also have 'The Warlocks/The Falling Spikes' vinyl LP that came out in 1987 with the other songs but missing 'Femme Fatale'. Those records had drop-outs that were very bad, tape speed was wrong, and the source tape was dubbed "through the air" with a microphone in front of a speaker playing the original tape with some bonus noises: the barking dog. The records can't hold a candle to the 'Move Back' CD. Review: Something Was Inevitable by Doug Snyder with photos by Al Brandenberger in WGO fanzine #5. Doug Snyder: "This time one of us - Dick Felton - took a tape recorder. The Velvets equipment manager helped us with an extension cord for our mono recorder. The tape Dick made of the concert ends with him saying, "I'm scared to play it back. I really am." Dick's tape has been bootlegged many times over the years - but never by him. The best known boot is 'Velvet Underground 1966' which was put out by Bernd Baierschmidt in 1981.
