Velocities (1990), subtitled Moto Perpetuo, is a major component of today's solo marimba literature. It was commissioned by the Percussive Arts Society and funded by the National Endowment for the Arts in a Consortium Commission for world-renowned marimbists Leigh Howard Stevens, William Moersch, and Gordon Stout. Its extensive moving lines make this work a challenge for even the most advanced marimbist. Velocities is structured in a single arch-like allegro movement with continuously changing textures and suddenly shifting meters. Rapidly articulated six***th notes in four, five, six, and seven note pitch sets develop extensive linear, harmonic, and rhythmic elements of the work. Leigh Howard Stevens gave Velocities its world premiere at the 1990 Percussive Arts Society International Convention in Philadelphia. Velocity Stack - How it Works - Project Car TV A velocity stack is a trumpet-shaped device of differing lengths which is fitted to the air entry of an engine's intake system, carburetor or fuel injection. It is designed to: Allow smooth and even entry of air at high velocities into the intake tract with the flow stream adhering to the pipe walls. Modify the dynamic tuning range of the intake tract by functioning as a resonating pipe which can adjust the frequency of pressure pulses, based on its length, within the tract. Modern engines universally have tuned intake tract volumes and associated resonance frequencies, designed to provide higher than atmospheric intake air pressure while the intake valves are open - increasing the density of the trapped air in the combustion chamber (higher compression). Modified engines often have the original air box and associated ducting removed and velocity stacks are installed as accessories. Modern fuel injection systems with a plenum and single air inlet typically incorporate some sort of radiused entrance, designed to improve power, based on air flow increases. Power gains are usually at higher rpm. In amateur and professional racing, aftermarket velocity stacks are often used, as rules allow, and gains in the order of 2% to 4% can be obtained when inlet radii and stack lengths are optimized for that engine. Snub Nose Velocity Test I've been wanting to do this for some time now. This is some chronograph velocities we recorded for the Ruger SP-101 and the S&W Model 442. Ruger SP-101 2.25 inch barrel .357 Magnum S&W Model 442 1.875 inch barrel Rated for +P loads **Note** Factory stated numbers are tested from a 4" barrel. **Observations** Overall the % loss in energy with the SP-101 was 27.7% Overall the % loss in energy with the Model 442 was 26.2% These percentage losses are from factory stated velocities compared to our chronograph data. Most Factory .357 and 38 Spl loads are tested out of a 4 inch barrel. Let it not be said that you don't get any benefit from a .357 Mag out of a snubnose revolver...just compare the two in the video. These benefits; however, do come at a price and that is more muzzle flash and bang, and greater recoil, that can result in slower follow up shots. I was not surprised that the 110gr Winchesters were slightly anemic out of the snubby. This is based off of testing I'd done previously. I was however very surprised that the 158gr Speer's didn't perform as well. I had come to the assumption that the heavier bullets would maintain more energy out of the shorter barrel. In fact it lost 37% energy which was the highest percentage loss in the test. The Remington 125gr .357s performed pretty well and are typically bargained price, and should probably be high on the list for carry loads (although I do like the bonded bullet construction of the Speer's round more). MultiWii Barometer Simulator (testing Velocity Position Controller) I am tired of the MultiWii baro not working. I got an idea to make a test application that simulates all the physics in the Z axis only to test a new altitude holding algorithm. Here are the results. The new algorithm uses a Velocity/Position loop. The inner velocity control loop controls the copter's thrust to maintain a set velocity. The outer (altitude) position loop controls the velocity to travel to or maintain the altitude. The algorithm maintains smooth velocities while travelling to the desired altitude - with very little overshoot and maintains a stable altitude. Gravity is also fed forward into the velocity loop. In other words, the velocity loop anticipates the effect of gravity.

Effects of the Velocity on the Pipette Shape This video illustrates the impact of changes in the velocity in the next-to-last line of a multi-line pull program. Starting point for those changes is sample program #1, which is covered in much detail in the tutorial video "Pulling a Patch Pipette From Quartz Glass". Host Jan Dolzer explains and demonstrates the relationship between the velocity in line 1, the hourglass that is presented to the last line of the pull program, and the length of the taper in the final pipette. In addition, we learn how to recognize inappropriate settings of this parameter. While a two-line sample program is used as an example here, the user will observe very similar effects when varying the velocity in the next-to-last line of 3-, 4-, 5- or 6-line programs.
