Chris Ashcraft (2003) - Genetic Variability by Design Chris Ashcraft (2003) - Genetic Variability by Design New alleles are accumulating rapidly in living populations and cellular mechanisms have not been adequately sought to explain the intentional production of these changes. Homologous DNA recombination occurs in all organisms and is at the heart of genetics. Since its discovery during meiosis, these reactions were assumed to occur randomly along the length of chromosomes, and only involved with gene crossovers. It is now well known that meiotic recombination is not the random process it was originally assumed to be, and controlled by highly organized regulatory systems. In addition, a form of homologous recombination has been discovered which is responsible for creating diversity in variable genes, and was recently linked to single base-pair substitutions in immunoglobulins. New allele formation may indeed be the key to explaining the rapid production of distinct breeds, but their presence in the genome has been assumed the result of random mutations. Therefore, the ability of the cell to purposefully edit genes requires evaluation. This video is a 64 minute seminar recorded by the Design Science Association in Portland, OR July 2003 ( ). The presentation is based on a research paper of the same title. About the Speaker: Christopher Wayne Ashcraft, MS, M.Ed. is a creation scientist, speaker, and educator. NSF Variability Expedition As semiconductor manufacturers build ever smaller components, circuits and chips at the nano scale become less reliable and more expensive to produce -- no longer behaving like precisely chiseled machines with tight tolerances. Modern computing tends to ignore the variability in behavior of underlying system components from device to device, their wear-out over time, or the environment in which the computing system is placed. This makes them expensive, fragile and vulnerable to even the smallest changes in the environment or component failures. The Variability Expedition envisions a computing world where system components -- led by proactive software -- routinely monitor, predict and adapt to the variability of manufactured systems. Changing the way software interacts with hardware offers the best hope for perpetuating the fundamental gains in computing performance at lower cost of the past 40 years. The Variability Expedition fundamentally rethinks the rigid, deterministic hardware-software interface, to propose a new class of computing machines that are not only adaptive but also highly energy efficient. These machines will be able to discover the nature and extent of variations in hardware, develop abstractions to capture these variations, and drive adaptations in the software stack from compilers, runtime to applications. The resulting computer systems will work and continue working while using components that vary in performance or grow less reliable over time and ...

Decadal Ocean Variability - Temperature and Heat Flux Anomaly Evolution From a numerical study of decadal ocean variability using MITgcm: The movie shows an east-west section of potential temperature anomalies and associated air-sea heat flux anomalies through 60N in the northern hemisphere, "small" basin of MITgcm's "Double Drake", aquaplanet, configuation, in an experiment intended to probe the role of ocean circulation in decadal Atlantic variability. The movie shows temperature anomalies originating near the eastern boundary which strengthen as they propagate westward as thermal Rossby waves. Comparison of the location of air-sea heat flux anomalies compared with those of the temperature anomalies in the model ocean suggests that the temperature anomalies are damped by air-sea heat fluxes at all stages in their evolution... Solar Variability and Total Solar Irradiance (TSI) [HD] ***yzing the Sun and its affects on climate is complicated by the fact that the amount of radiation arriving from the Sun is not constant. It varies from the average value of the total solar irradiance (TSI)--1361 W/m2--on a daily basis. Variations in TSI are due to a balance between decreases caused by sunspots and increases caused by faculae, which are the bright areas that surround sunspots. The Sun's energy output varies with time, and the TIM instrument on the failed Glory satellite would have helped measure those fluctuations by continued monitoring of TSI data. Data from Glory's TIM instrument was to extend the long-term climate record, which has been uninterrupted since 1978 and provides the best estimate available of solar inputs to climate. This short movie displays the Sun rotating and the corresponding total solar irradiance. This data in this video is from October 2003, and displays the largest recorded short-term decrease in TSI. glory.gsfc.nasa.gov Credit: Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics.

The Extreme Ultraviolet Variability Experiment (EVE) Dean Pesnell explains how the The Extreme Ultraviolet Variability Experiment (EVE) instrument will allow us to better measure solar irradiance in extreme ultraviolet wavelengths. This type of irradiance, which is absorbed completely by Earth's upper atmosphere, can be dangerous to astronauts and electronics in space. It can also heat up and expand the outer atmosphere, potentially causing satellites to fall out of orbit. High resolution download at: svs.gsfc.nasa.gov

Eastern Mediterranean Climate Variability Lecture on December 5, 2008, by Dr. Ramzi Touchan, PhD, Associate Research Professor, Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research, University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona. Dr. Touchan's research focuses on integrating dendrochronology into natural and water resources management in the Middle East, Eastern Mediterranean, and North Africa. His current research programs include establishing a multi-century network of climate records for the Eastern Mediterranean and North Africa based on tree rings by extending and enhancing existing tree-ring datasets, and by developing new tree-ring chronologies geographically and temporally. This network is being, and will continue to be, used to study interannual to century scale climate fluctuations in the region and their links to large-scale patterns of climate variability.

Decadal Ocean Variability - Connecting T anomalies to the MOC From a numerical study of decadal ocean variability using MITgcm: The 4 panels of the movie show: (top left) subsurface temperature anomalies, (top-right) an east-west section of potential temperature at 60N,(bottom-left) convective index anomalies at 60N, and (bottom-right) the meridional overturning circulation (MOC) at 60N in the northern hemisphere, "small" basin of the MITgcm "Double Drake" configuration. Besides showing the temperature anomalies propagating westwards, the movie also shows that warm (cold) anomalies on the eastern boundary are associated with increased (decreased) convection. When temperature anomalies reach the western boundary, they spin up the inter-hemispheric MOC. (animation credit: Martha Buckley, Marshall Group, MIT)
