If you have no electricity, no roads and human power is the only way to go, then this is my way of milling lumber using a chain saw. The process is laborious but can be very rewarding, especially considering the cost of sometimes mediocre lumber from the builders yard. We are lucky to own property on a remote island off Canada's west coast and built a cabin there over twenty years ago. It is a wonderful place to be, but everything has to be brought in by boat...or helicopter if you like to burn money. There is no regular vehicle ferry service and only a few rough, unmaintained logging roads. Human power and a little ingenuity is the order of the day if one is to undertake a construction project. After building the cabin, for which I used mainly commercial lumber products, shipped in by barge, I was able to devote time to chain saw lumber making. We are fortunate to have lots of mainly Douglas Fir, lumber grade trees which provide lots of building material and firewood. The wood supply is sustainable for our own use. I have made many mistakes, torn through a few chainsaws and ruined some equipment over the years but now have developed my own system for operating a Granberg Alaska Mill - your mileage may vary, if this is what you want to do. This road is the one I take to get to my house, pretty much the whole length of it is this bad or worse, had to find alternative route after a garbage truck sunk in and got stuck. A first hand look at the condition of the streets on the way to my home in Heartland Village. The rents in the trailor court are an average of $1000 on up to around 3 grand a month. Garbage pickup is now spotty due to the trucks not being able to enter safely.   • 1991 Nissan Pathfinder 4 Wheeling This is me driving my 91 pathfinder on an unmaintained forest road in Arizona. I wasn't trying to tear anything up while 4 wheeling so that's why I didn't push it harder than I did. I'm getting ready to drive this across the country and I don't need it broken. Suspension mods are as followed. Skyjacker 8000 Nitro Shocks, The rear are two inches longer to allow the rear axle to drop more than stock. There is no lift at all. Stock springs and torsion bars. I installed Airlift 1000 airbag helper spring to help support the load by they in no way assist in the amount of flex in the rear end. I was worried about tearing them up with the amount of axle drop in the rear but they held up perfectly. I couldn't be happier. Outside of what's listed above I disconnected the upper link on the rear sway bar on the driver's side of the truck. I zip tied the link to the sway bar to keep it from flopping around. This also worked out great. No need for expensive quick disconnects or to completely remove the sway bar. Simply do what I did and you're golden. I've done nothing upfront other than rebuild the suspension and add an idler arm brace. This is basically stock suspension wise. I build the roof rack myself. the ammo cans are my tool boxes. The tires are 31x10.5R15 Yokohama Geolander AT-S. I can't say enough good things about these tires. I like them WAY better than the BFG AT that I use to have on another car of mine. To us though, the significance found here was never directly related to the history of the property, but rather how this house adapted to unmaintained life in the woods. As with most places that become abandoned; once left alone, these buildings can become something else entirely. Gone are the pristine lawns and manicured pathways; replaced with tall grass, weeds, and thorns. The bright washes of the house's exterior, faded, stained, and ensnared by the growth of the forest.
