GSAPP Advanced Studio 2010- Urbarasite Homogenization of apartment buildings symbolized the process of civilization in most of the Asian cities. Mega blocks filled with pillars of uniform apartment towns are undeniably the dated product of modernism. This inevitable globe phenomena shapes the urban landscape into isolated autonomous urban islands, disconnecting any interaction between different parts of the city. This project is situated in Anyang, one of the satellite cities from Seoul. The site is an existing housing tower development offering the same type of homogenous gated community. This project raises questions of how we can dissolve the rigid boundary created by the apartments, and thus trigger the latent network between the public and private proximity in order to form a new type of urban habitation. The program of the project is a unique type of building typology in Korea called Keunseng (community building), which consists of retail space, after school classes, and various Bangs. Bang, meaning room, is unique to Korean culture. Since there is limited space for leisure activities inside the apartment, different kinds of Bangs emerge to provide space for leisure and entertainment. An ***ysis of Wong Kar Wai's film: Fallen Angels was deployed as a performative design tool. From there, a number of principles were extracted -- the ice-cream van can be seen as a Keunseng building; it is an autonomous object floating in the city. The window acts as the threshold, the object starts to be able to interact ...

Ronald Krug & Peter Pilles :: Projectile Point Distributions on the Coconino National Forest For the past 35 years, projectile points have been routinely collected as part of archaeological surveys conducted by personnel of the Coconino National Forest. From these surveys, over 2600 projectile points have been collected. Unlike ceramics, which have well established and accepted typologies, efforts to make some sense from the distribution of these points have been frustrated by the lack of a uniform, accepted projectile point typology for the region. Recently, however, the Kaibab and Coconino National Forests have cooperated in developing a typology for projectile points that will hopefully result in a standardized nomenclature for future projects on the two Forests. This paper presents some initial impressions of the geographical distribution and patterns for the various point types on the Coconino National Forest. Points from the Forest represent a complete sequence of activity, from Paleoindian; through Early, Middle, and Late Archaic and into the Northern Sinagua, Southern Sinagua, and Cohonina although points forms usually attributed to the Hohokam, Basketmaker, and Pueblo are also present. Points from the Protohistoric period are also represented and are attributed to the Pai and Apache in both the southern and northern parts of the Forest. Protohistoric points suggest travel corridors between the Verde and Little Colorado River Valleys and indicate Pai utilization of the Anderson Mesa --Chavez Pass area that has not previously been noted. IMPOTENT :: ABSTRACT FORMAL EXPLORATION takuma kakehi The project is a formal exploration initiated by studying an architectural dead typology (impotent) which does not correspond to today's needs. The exploration began with developing simple geometrical rules to create formal typologies. Their simple parameters such as rotations and scales were adjusted for multiple iterations. The resultant form is due to environmental factors deforming and combining prototype components. This was the great first exercise for timings, motion graphics, and general video productions. Serpentine Pavilion - Rem Koolhaas //////// Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2006, by Rem Koolhaas and Cecil Balmond, with Arup 13 July 15 October 2006 The Serpentine Pavilion 2006 was co-designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Rem Koolhaas and innovative structural designer Cecil Balmond. The centrepiece of the design was a spectacular ovoid-shaped inflatable canopy that floated above the Gallerys lawn. Made from translucent material, the canopy was raised into the air or lowered to cover the amphitheatre below according to the weather. A frieze designed by Thomas Demand marked the first collaboration between an artist and the designers of the Pavilion. The walled enclosure below the canopy functioned both as a café and forum for televised and recorded public programmes including live talks and film screenings in the Time Out Park Nights at the Serpentine Gallery programme. The Pavilion also housed works by several artists participating in the Uncertain States of America exhibition. Rem Koolhaas said: The 2006 Serpentine Pavilion is defined by events and activities. We are proposing a space that facilitates the inclusion of individuals in communal dialogue and shared experience. Cecil Balmond said: These Pavilions have evolved with various structural typologies and materials, provoking a debate on architecture; this year the exploration continues not only with typology and material but with the very definition of Pavilion. Each Summer, the Serpentine commissions an internationally ...

Phrenology part 1 Phrenology is the science which studies the relationships between a person's character and the morphology of the skull. It is a very ancient object of study. The first philosopher to locate mental faculties in the head was in fact Aristoteles. Several typologies have been defined, linking physionomy with character. The study of the face, physiognomony, has been particularly studied by the 18th century Swiss author Lavater.

Typologies We now live in a culture so saturated with media imagery and media models of how people live, that our idea of how one lives ones life of who one is made up of that kind of media myth and in a sense it negates the idea of portraiture, the idea of that you can dress up and go to a studio and somehow reveal your strength of character or your inherent humanity or whatever you dont have any inherent humanity in the post modernist ***ysis of things. We are all these composites of myths and narratives written by other people' Excerpts from the Genius of Photograhy (BBC) Colin Westerbeck in Postmodernism in Photography The portraits where borne out of me being bored to my wits. Frustrated on not being able to string a thought or a narrative to the photographs that I was taking. I turned to taking portraits when we arrived in Bursa, the green bastion of Turkey. Coincidentally it was here that we met Mahir a local from Istanbul, he served as my translator while doing this series. Fortunately the locals of Bursa were warmer and much more welcoming. Thus began my journey to the unexpected. On this day alone, I was able to capture almost 60 portraits and then factoring in the people that didnt respond positively and you can imagine how much connection I made in this space of time. I was blessed that they found me interesting enough for them to let me take theyre portrait. The portraits where all taken with a telephoto lens, in the same approximate distance.
