West Porton model train, tram, trolleybus OO/HO layout. David Wood's British-themed OO/HO scale layout of a place known as 'West Porton' featuring working trains, trams and trolleybuses ('electric trolleybuses' in American English). Filmed at the 2009 Festival of Model Tramways, which was at the Kew Bridge Steam Museum, London. Although it was not intended to as such the film includes a discussion between two visitors (me plus someone else)and Mr Wood about the layout and some of its features. At the end there are a few still images too. Powered via the overhead wires and using working trolleypoles the trolleybuses are model buses fitted with model tram electric motors. Most of them use the Faller system for steering although we also see some buses which use the now discontinued Brawa system. As is seen in the video, there is even a junction where different buses follow different routes! Getting it all to work - and without any dewirements - is an act of sheer genius- its simply fantastic. The metro train is based upon the iconic Paris metro Sprague trains, and painted 1st class red. A still image showing the Parisian trains overlays the screen at the appropriate moment. This image is copyright-free and was sourced from the Wikipedia Commons.
MUNI SF Electric Trolley Bus ETB's (1/2) This look at the ETB Lines of MUNI starts off with a musical intro (sorry for the corny music, but it fits!) featuring a number of run-by clips. From there, it goes into sound clips of the Flyer E-800's (currently confined only to peak route #41-UNION) as well as sound clips of the Flyer Artics that can be found on routes 14, 30, and 49. Gdynia Trolleybuses - 3 3rd of 3 videos about Gdynia Trolleybuses (in Poland). We start with a study of three different trolleybuses in the Town Centre - a Jelcz of the later design, a new Solaris Trollino and then an earlier Jelcz. The Jelcz trolleybuses are a copy of the Berliet designs from France. The scene then moves to an out-of-town busy cross roads, and then onto a special trip. Starting with a driver's-eye view, this trip used ex-St Gallen (Switzerland) Saurer Trolleybus number 3300. This is used by the Gdynia operator every Sunday to run trips from the town to the nearby resort of Sopot. It can also be hired for special occasions, which is what our party did. It ends up at the terminus of route 28. The Gdynia video series starts at: For photographs of Gdynia and other trolleybus cities, see:

Gdynia Trolleybuses - 2 2nd of 3 videos about Gdynia Trolleybuses (in Poland). Starting near the Docks (unfortunately for the video, in extremely bright sunshine), this video shows the twin bridges which used to be the only way in to the docks - one was inbound, one outbound, now they are both outbound; a new inbound bridge was built later, also seen on the video. The two old bridges were the site of the clashes between the shipyard workers and the Communist authorities in 1970. These were the forerunner to the more famous Solidarity strikes in nearby Gdansk in 1980. After the shipyards, we move back near the Town Centre, and then to the end of routes 23 & 27 at Karwiny, the site of a new massive supermarket complex that was under construction at the time, and explains the large number of trolleybuses terminating here. The Gdynia video series starts at: For photographs of Gdynia and other trolleybus cities, see:

Model Trolleybus Testdrive Test drive of a H0-scale (1:87) model trolleybus. Those vehicles (UeH IIIs - Uerdingen-Henschel) ran in Solingen, Germany, or Salzburg, Austria, (and other European cities) in the fifties. The very same coach is nowadays still existing and running in the Solingen ETB museum. For the model railroaders among us: The brand new model is motored, digitized (DCC, takes electricity from the real functional overhead), illuminated (mind the indicator/turn signal) and guided by the "Faller Car System" magnet wire (hidden in the paving). I love it!
Reading Trolleybuses 1936 - 1968 On November 3rd 1968 Reading abandoned their trolleybus system. This short film starts with black and white footage of normal service operation. The colour footage is of an NTA tour which included abnormal operations such as reversing at Norcot, turning in Broad Street without an effective battery and wrong line supply from the overhead, something frowned upon by management. The conductor who had to rewire a vehicle demonstrates how not to do it. Forty years on Reading, and other trolleybuses, live on at the Sandtoft Trolleybus museum in Lincolnshire, the world's largest trolleybus museum. Visit Trolleybuses last operated in Britain in Bradford in 1972. Derby Trolley Bus footage from the late 1960s I have been given a rare film that shows the last of the Trolley buses around the city of Derby, Derbyshire. I would like to hear from people if they have seen this footage before as it looks like there should be more footage than this. Even though the film is about the Trolley buses II am more interested in the background, trying to work out the locations. I have watched it several times now and find it facinating. Here are some I have recognised, see if you can.. 00.04 Normaton Road near Melbourne Street. 00.07 Ashbourne Road towards Markeaton. 00.14 Markeaton Island and Ashbourne road and A52. 00.45 A52 turning off to Mackworth estate. 01.25 Looking up Near top of Babington Lane, the Progressive Buildings are on the left and the Serbian Orthodox Church - Ss. Riga Multiple-unit trams & multiple-unit trolleybuses. These images come from a short trip I made to Riga, which is the capital city of Latvia, in a bitterly cold and cloudy April 1998. Although the operation of multiple unit trains and trams (aka: light rail) where the trailing units are powered is a well-known aspect of steel wheel transports, it is much rarer with rubber-tyred transports. However before the advent of articulated buses the use of coupled or multiple-unit trolleybuses was practised in many cities in what used to be known as the Soviet Union. For multiple-unit operation the front vehicle does not use its trolleypoles and is both physically and electrically connected to the rear vehicle. The coupling between them works by means of a drawbar which is connected to the steering arm of the rear bus - so that it just follows the driving one. Effectively therefore the principle is very similar to a road vehicle pulling a trailer - except that here both vehicles are powered. Once coupled the twin-set combinations would normally remain coupled (unless the workshops disconnected them). So the rear vehicle would not normally drive 'solo'. As is clearly seen in this film, for reasons of safety pedestrians are prevented from walking between the two vehicles by means of flexible gates. Riga no longer uses multiple-unit trolleybuses as they now prefer articulated trolleybuses. As far as the former Soviet Union is concerned, it is believed that maybe just one or two cities in The Ukraine still use multiple-unit trolleybuses ...
Bournemouth Trolleybuses On April 20th 1969 Bournemouth closed its fine trolleybus system. The system had a number of features that were unusual. Christchurch High Street was too narrow for a conventional turning loop so trolleys used a turntable. The driver held the booms clear of the wire while the clippie pushed the bus round. Trolleys had a open rear platform for boarding and a door operated exit at the front. The doors were opened and shut by the driver. These trolleys had two staircases, at the rear for boarding passengers and at the front for alighting passengers. This system of boarding and alighting was devised to cope with heavy demand during the holiday season. Bournemouth's trolleybuses covered some 39 route miles with 127 vehicles at its peak. Plans to build a town centre by-pass spelled the end for the trolleys. Soon after this film was shot the Pier area was to despoiled by a flyover of monumental ugliness. Twickenham to Teddington by trolleybus. Twickenham to Teddington by trolleybus on the first day of operation May 16th 1931. --------------------------------------- There are chunks of the journey missing but I have put what film clips there are into the right order. Note the trams still in service. The driver had to drive these trams from a position completely open to the elements. Along with the trolleybus a new tram was also entering service with a completely enclosed cab..This was the "Feltham" type tram. The half cab trolleybus design, seen in the video, was soon to be superseded by the well known flat fronted design. The half cab trolleybuses known as "Diddlers" were retired in 1948. The last London trolleybus ran in May 1962 along the route shown in the video. Today the London bus route 281 follows the same route. Check out these links... LONDON TROLLEYBUSES: ONLINE VIDEO:

Walsall Trolleybuses a film by Barry Coward Walsall Corporation has a interesting fleet of trolleybuses. Many were second hand from systems that had closed. In this film there are examples from Ipswich and Grimsby and Cleethorpes. However the mainstay of the operations were by Walsall designed 8ft wide Sunbeam trolleybuses with double reduction rear axles that gave a distinctive whine when riding on the lower deck. Walsall's General Manager Ronald Edgley-Cox had great faith in the future of the trolleybus, but the Labour Transport Minister, Richard Marsh reorganised transport in the West Midlands and the operation passed to the newly formed West Midlands PTE who promptly set about withdrawing the system. Trolleybuses ceased on 3rd October 1970. You can view stills of Walsall trolleybuses at Trolleybuses last operated in Britain in Bradford in 1972.
