  • Trochoidal Turning in Pro/NC - Creo Elements/Pro 5.0 After some months investigating solutions I learned a lot about other CAM systems and how they do things. I also learned some nasty marketing tactics employed by CAx vendors and that sometimes the things are wrapped with a nice cover but in the core they are all alike. That being said, I created a small video showing Creo Elements/Pro 5 profile turning toolpaths applied in a complex groove so that you can get the so called "Trochoidal Turning" effect such as shown in Unigraphics NX and Sandvik video. Please check this out at Sandvik website: qstream- This video shows how to make this in Pro/NC or Creo Elements/Pro. It can be done in all Pro/NC versions as well. "Trochoidal Turning" in Siemens NX is NOT a dedicated toolpath as it seems but rather a series of profiles offseted with reversed lead in / lead out moves / cut directions. Enjoy it! Daniel

  • Trochoidal miling test run for CamBam.WMV I designed a part to help in the development of CAmBam to do trochoidal milling. As can be seen the shape makes the loads on the cutter harder during normal milling. Its a 14mm carbide endmill cutting full depth in a 16mm steel plate, it is 200mm wide by 100 depth and at times the cutter is cutting at 2m per minute. The cutter rpm is 2400 and the starting weight of the plate is 2.4kg the finished weight is 600 grms. Current machine time is 18minute but expect to be able to get it down to 14 minutes in the near future.

For better results use a carbide endmill, that way you can run a spectacular depth of cut with the same speed-feed ratio. The programmed speeds-feeds were 49.6-inch/minute @ 4966-RPM. I increased it at the machine control to 6455-RPM then bumped the feeds up to 163.87-inch/minute. The cutter could go deeper if needed, but the pocket parameters required two layers before finishing the depth, so I truncated it down to a more conservative amount. The best way to figure out what works is to try it!
