The rest of the time his character is played by heavily disguised doubles, while the majority of the cast play auxiliary roles in what amounts to an entirely new story.

Brian Trenchard-Smith on HOW THE WEST WAS WON Brian Trenchard-Smith knows HOW THE WEST WAS WON The second dramatic film shot in three-panel Cinerama, this sprawling all-star western epic came too late to save the process, which was being replaced by a simpler single-lens system. Many action sequences were shot normally and converted to three-panel. By the time the brand-new Cinerama Dome in Hollywood opened in 1963 its initial "Cinerama" attraction, It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, had been made entirely without the three-panel process the theater was built to showcase. Brian Trenchard-Smith on DR. NO Brian Trenchard-Smith stares down DR. NO The first entry in the greatest tentpole series of all time, seven of which starred Sean Connery in the role that made him an international star. Amazingly, author Ian Fleming wanted composer-actor Hoagy Carmichael to play his licensed-to-kill Agent 007. The then-groundbreaking amorality of the concept led Patrick McGoohan to turn down the role, as did Richard Johnson (who later played in two Bond-like Bulldog Drummond films) and Roger Moore, who later replaced Connery as Bond. Brian Trenchard-Smith on BECKET Out of circulation for decades, Peter Glenville's acclaimed film of Jean Anouilh's 1959 play was recently restored by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and Martin Scorsese's Film Foundation. Friendly rivals Richard Burton and Peter O'Toole once again don regal robes as Archbishop Thomas Becket and King Henry II, whose emotional relationship sours over matters of faith. Edward Anhalt's eloquent, endlessly quotable screenplay won the only one of the 12 Oscars this film was nominated for. Five years later O'Toole played an older Henry II in The Lion in Winter. Brian Trenchard-Smith on THE SURVIVOR Brian Trenchard-Smith created this trailer for an Aussie supernatural thriller that never made it to American theaters. Director David Hemmings (star of Blow-Up) was determined to class up what was initially intended as a lowly horror movie, and rewrites of David Ambrose's script continued throughout production. Actor's Equity frowned on so many overseas cast members and refused to allow Susan George and Samatha Eggar to perform. Thom Eberhardt's 1983 Sole Survivor uses the same premise to a degree that it should almost be considered a remake, although there's no official connection. Brian Trenchard-Smith on THIS IS CINERAMA Brian Trenchard-Smith shows off CINERAMA Back in the days when moviegoing was an event, the Roadshow Attraction was a special audience-pleaser designed to run for months in the same theater with reserved seating and, naturally, increased ticket prices. Of all the big-screen processes designed to lure audiences out of their living rooms and away from the dreaded picture tube, Cinerama was the most elaborate, requiring three projectors, a huge curved screen and multiple soundtracks to "put you in the picture". Numerous popular Cinerama productions followed, mostly travelogs, until the format was replaced by Ultra Panavision in the early sixties. Brian Trenchard-Smith on BILLY LIAR One of the key works in the early British "kitchen sink" movement, John Schlesinger's screen adaptation of Keith Waterhouse's seriocomic novel spoke loudly to young people the world over. Tom Courtenay, taking over from Albert Finney in the stage version, made a big enough impression to go on to a strong career. But the revelation here is Julie Christie, luminous as the hero's free-spirited girlfriend in only her third film role. Schlesinger went on direct her Oscar-winning breakthough two years later with the lead role in Darling.
