Gorgoderid cercariae Gorgoderidae (Trematoda) cercariae from fingernail clam in western Nebraska. Adults are probably frog bladder flukes.Pictures were shot using a Nikon AlphaPhot teaching compound microscope with a trinocular head and a mounted camera. Ill shoot some scales and post them separately as a short video. Lowest mags were with a 4X objectives, next mags with a 10X objective, and highest with a 40X objective. The camera tube has no separate eyepiece lens. Thanks for the suggestions!

Cercaria parasite (larval trematode) Trematode cercaria, looking for a vertebrate to parasitize. At least 1 mm long. It has a large ventral sucker (acetabulum), positioned below its mouth and above the tail. Found in a ditch, along with a small snail who was probably his last host.

Bladder fluke Bladder flukes, probably Gorgoderina attenuata, from a leopard frog; filmed during the Field Parasitology class at the University of Nebraska's Cedar Point Biological Station.

Hatching of a Schistosoma Mansoni Miracidium This video shows an S.mansoni miracidium hatching from it's egg. The hatching is a passive process, and the egg breaks due to osmosis, water fills the egg until it breaks, allowing the miracidium to emerge from it's coconut like prison

Parasite in the eye of a Fathead minnow Larval Trematode parasites emerge from an aquatic snail and swim to burrow through the surface of the second intermediate host, a minnow. The larval worm typically forms a cyst in the body cavity of the fish, emerging when the fish (containing the parasite) is eaten by the the next host in the lifecycle, typically a heron. In this case, the larval parasite, Posthodiplostomum minimum, penetrated the eye of a Fathead minnow, and has not yet formed a cyst.

Schistosoma mansoni larvae cultured for 6 days Immmature S. mansoni worms called schistosomula (sing. schistosomulum) that have been grown for 6 days in a cell culture medium containing red blood corpuscles (RBCs) - the little pink dots. The reddish-brown area in some of the worms indicates the position of the developing intestine and is due to the digestion of hemoglobin present in the RBCs upon which the worms feed. Note how flexible the worms are as they extend, contract and curl. These worms derive from the cercarial stage, shown in another video entitled 'larval Schistosoma parasite'.

TRUCULENCY FROM TREMATODE

Frog with an extra limb found near Lake Dauphin Video of a wood frog (Rana sylvatica) found on the east side of Lake Dauphin in Manitoba. The limb even has fingers. From what I've read, it's likely the result of a combination of pestisides and a common trematode (swimmers itch) although it might be just a genetic mishap (let's hope!). Makes me wonder about the safety of my agricultural surroundings!! Found May 22, 2010.
