One of Virunga's Mountain Gorilla Families at Rest. This family of Mountain Gorillas is enjoying a break. About halfway through each day the animals stop their otherwise endless quest for food and they rest and play together. It's an important part of their lives: they build and strengthen their relationships, establish and maintain hierarchy, and have some fun while they're at it. These gorillas live in Virunga National Park in the DRC. It is an incredibly diverse place, both topographically and biologically. It is also a very dangerous place. Poverty, war, corruption and chaos threaten to overwhelm the park at all times. The Mountain Gorilla is a critically endangered species, and these gorillas are more endangered than most. The only people protecting them are the Park Rangers who made this film. They track and monitor all the gorillas every day. They know their names and follow their lives. Norway: Quest for the Viking Spirit Watch for the television special, Richard Bangs Adventures with Purpose--Norway: Quest for the Viking Spirit, airing now on PBS stations nationwide. A thousand years ago Vikings set out from the fjords of Norway striking fear across Europe. Yet today this topographically severe country is the home of the Nobel Peace Center; is a world center for conflict resolution; is the starting point for explorers and adventurers and twitchers, and is one of the most eco-friendly countries on earth. How could such a progressive nation grown from such violent past? Is modern Norway a result of its Viking heritage or a reaction against it?

Donut Wood Stove - Grilling Steak with wood pellets Donut Wood Stove grilling sizzling steak. Just add a handful of wood pellets, some fire starter then light on top. Burns for 30 minutes with blue flame and no smoke. Could be used for boiling, frying, baking and grilling. Not suitable for space heating due to the carbon monoxide. See video link on how to make it. The three cut-outs on the top rim are for my rice cooker pot skirt/pot stand. For car camping or picnics, I recommend purchasing a small rice cooker (eg Black and Decker 6 cup model) then remove all electronics and plastic parts. Just keep the glass lid, the cooking pot, the pot skirt (ie. the outer shell), and the steaming tray. First burn will have lots of smoke from the paint on the pot skirt, but no smell after that. Health Warning: If you are cooking indoors, it must be done under an exhast fan that vents air to OUTSIDE. This stove produces a large amount of CO which will cause health problem or worse. Once I finished cooking, I dumped the remaining pellets and char into a pot of water so that I can enjoy my steak. If left alone, it will generate a large amount of smoke once the fire is out. How It's Made - - Get a 1.36 litre juice can (106mm diameter) - Cut a 37mm secondary air hole in the centre - draw a 77mm circle and punch 11 primary air holes (5mm diameter) on that circle - Use can opener to remove lid. Keep lid and discard can. Make 4mm long cuts every 3mm along the rim of this disk. Bend the little tabs slightly to reduce diameter of ...

Entry: "La Paz is topographically unlike any other city we have visited. We have travelled to cities ringed by hills but La Paz is a large city which creeps up the side of one mountain and down the side of another. It's as if a giant picnic blanket has been shaken and outstretched on this larger than life, up and down landscape. Wherever this blanket has touched the earth a zillion dwellings have been erected. Looking up the walls of this mountain you can see the morass of lower socioeconomic residencies climbing up the escarpment creating a sea of red brick. Jutting out between these homes are earthy cliffs, a few parks and a river. In the distance is an incredible snow capped volcano, Illimani, which peeps out whenever the sky is blue. Lower down the mountain in the flatter, centre of town are much more affluent buildings. These are ornate, rendered structures intermingled with plazas and decorative floral road adornments. The city is one of the highest in the world at 3600m and the steep edges mean the temperature in the city varies by how far up the mountainside you live. Combine this altitude's incredible lack of oxygen with the city's steep staircases and precipitous roadways and you can see why I spent most of my time here ...

GPU Cloth Demo A demonstration of my implementation of cloth running on the GPU. This is realtime; ie, 300fps on GeForce 8400M GS. It uses the classic "ball and spring" model. It took all weekend to create. This implementation is fairly simple, using only distance tensors. Angle tensors are currently broken, and I'm working to fix them. Kernel sizes are also broken/not supported. Presently, the cloth has no way of colliding with itself; and I don't know how I would go about doing that anyway. The cloth is, however, fully wrappable; topographically closed objects can be created. The lighting is computed by comparing each point with it four orthogonal neighbors, and signing the result by the cross product of two of them. The cloth is computed using a position/restrained texture and a velocity texture. The textures are updated via ping-ponged FBOs and custom shaders. This demo is presently in heavy beta, but it and the Python source will be made available on when I release a new version of my OpenGL library. Look for it under "Geometrian". Enjoy. Now, back to coding...

Israeli General Giora Eiland: How to Eliminate Palestinian Military Threat In order to operate anti rocket and missile systems efficiently and effectively, Israel needs a tactical distance of several kilometers from the location of the enemy forces, Gen. Eiland said at the June 2, 2010 conference sponsored by the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs. To read further on this issue: For the full study on this issue: Defensible Borders to Secure Israel's Future By Maj.-Gen. (res.) Uzi Dayan -It is commonly misunderstood just how vulnerable Israel actually is. Some 70 percent of its population and 80 percent of its industrial capacity are concentrated in the narrow coastal strip between the Mediterranean Sea and the West Bank. The adjacent West Bank hills topographically dominate the relatively flat and exposed coastal plain, providing a distinct advantage to an attacker for observation, fire, and defense from an Israeli ground response. -If the West Bank were to fall into hostile hands, the resulting situation would pose a constant threat to Israel's national infrastructure, including Ben-Gurion International Airport, the Trans-Israel Highway toll road, Israel's National Water Carrier, and its high-voltage electric power lines. -By its presence along the eastern perimeter of the West Bank in the Jordan Valley and the Judean Desert, Israel has been able to prevent weapons smuggling and the infiltration of hostile forces. Indeed, one of the most important preconditions of a successful counterinsurgency or counter ...

Mount San Jacinto San Jacinto Peak, 10834 feet (3302 m), is the highest peak of the San Jacinto Mountains, and of Riverside County, California. It lies within Mount San Jacinto State Park. Naturalist John Muir wrote of San Jacinto Peak, "The view from San Jacinto is the most sublime spectacle to be found anywhere on this earth!" San Jacinto Peak is one of the most topographically prominent peaks in the United States. It is ranked 6th among peaks in the 48 contiguous states. To the east, the peak towers over the city of Palm Springs; to the west, it borders the mountain community of Idyllwild. The peak is also frequently called Mount San Jacinto. The steep escarpment of its north face, above Snow Creek, climbs over 10000 feet (3000 m) in 7 miles (11 km). This is one of the largest gains in elevation over such a small horizontal distance in the contiguous United States. From the peak, San Gorgonio Mountain can be seen across the San Gorgonio Pass. Also easily visible below is the Coachella Valley and the Salton Sea. In addition, much of the Inland Empire, including Ontario to the west, can be viewed on a clear day. Mount San Jacinto is one of the "Three Saints," a name occasionally used to describe the high points of the three tallest mountain ranges in Southern California: San Jacinto Peak, Mount San Gorgonio (high point of the San Bernardino Mountains), and Mount San Antonio (high point of the San Gabriel Mountains).

How Does the Brain Navigate in Space Speaker: Edvard I. Moser (Kavli Institute for Systems Neuroscience, NTNU, Trondheim, Norway) Heller Lecture Series in Computational Neuroscience 22nd February, 2010 icnc.huji.ac.il The ability to find one's way depends on the brain's ability to integrate information about location, direction and distance. This ability is present across a wide range of species and, in mammals, depends on a phylogenetically conserved set of brain structures, including the hippocampus and the entorhinal cortex. I will show that the medial entorhinal cortex is part of this network, containing a two-dimensional metric map of the animals changing location in the environment. A key component of this map is the grid cell. Grid cells fire selectively at regularly spaced positions in the environment such that, for each cell, activity is observed only when the animal is at places that together define a repeating triangular pattern tiling the entire environment covered by the animal, almost like the cross points of graph paper, but with an equilateral triangle as the unit of the grid. Grid cells are topographically arranged in the sense that neighbouring cells have grid frequency and grid orientation and that the scale of the grid increases along the dorsoventral axis of medial entorhinal cortex. In medial entorhinal cortex and pre- and parasubiculum, grid cells co-localize with other recently discovered entorhinal cell types such as head-direction cells, conjunctive grid × head direction cells, and ...

San Gorgonio Hike February 5, 2011 hike at San Gorgonio. Time: 08:38:44 Distance: 10.77 mi Elevation Gain: 2876 ft. We went to almost 10 thousand feet, above the "base camp" at Dry Lake. Elevation gain from sea level to 10000 feet was hard on me, I really felt a lack of air. Next time I need to spend a day or two at 7000 feet before going to the summit. San Gorgonio Mountain, also known locally as Mount San Gorgonio, or Old Greyback, is the highest peak in Southern California at 11503 feet (3506 m). It is in the San Bernardino Mountains, 27 miles (43 km) east of the city of San Bernardino and 12 miles (19 km) north-northeast of San Gorgonio Pass. It lies within the San Gorgonio Wilderness, part of the San Bernardino National Forest. Spanish missionaries in the area during the early 17th century named the peak after Saint Gorgonius. Since it is the highest point in a region which is separated from higher peaks (eg in the Sierra Nevada) by relatively low terrain, San Gorgonio Mountain is one of the most topographically prominent peaks in the United States. It is ranked 7th among peaks in the 48 contiguous states and 18th among overall. The San Gorgonio Wilderness is the climax region of the San Bernardino Mountains in Southern California. Located on the San Bernardino National Forest approximately 75 miles east of Los Angeles (click here for vicinity map), the Wilderness receives approximately 200000 visitors per year. Its 58969 acres harbor two small lakes, meadows ...

First written use of Glastonbury being "Avalon" C. AD 946. This probably is the ancient Camelot, but it is not the type of "castle" which comes to mind when talking of them; it is a fortified town rather than a castle or fort. Near here was found a hastily dug mass grave of men and boys, evidently fallen in battle. It could be the grave of the fallen of the battle of Camlann, Arthur's last battle which may have been fought to defend this castle from the Saxon invaders. "Camlann" maybe the original British/Celtic name for this place. Arthur would have possibly known it by that name, not Camelot. Cambolanda: "Crooked enclosure", or "bank." A possible reference to the nearby river with the Celtic name, "Cam". The name "Camelot" maybe French, and originate from a 12th century interpretation of the old name. The stories of Arthur are British-Welsh but probably imported into Brittany. (Bretons = Britons) Near to here are two villages: Queen Camel and West Camel, historically, both post date this mysterious site.. The documented battle, Mount Badon, or "Mons Badonicus" in which Arthur defeated the Saxons is in the next county, Wiltshire, at Liddington, another 'fort'. It has the Saxon name "Badanburh", Celtic/British name "Badan". It stands on a sort of dark-age front-line between the Saxons and the Britons. The battle has been calculated, to have ...

Earthcache - Keltische Ringwall "Hunnenring" - Geocache GC1YZKQ This Earthcache is located near the German city of Nonnweiler in the state of Saarland. Quote from the Earthcache Description "The folkloric name "Hunnenring" ("Circle of the Huns") designates one of the biggest fortifications of the Celtic world. The old designation "Hunnenring" suggests the possible existence of the Huns in this region. This interpretation has, however, been proved nonsensical. The fortifications are situated on the edge of the Hunsrück Nature Park, on the "Dollberg" near Otzenhausen, 695m above sea level. Explanations regarding its function vary from it being purely a refuge keep, via an oppidum (a townlike settlement), to a seat of power and rulership or aristocracy. Topographically, the "Hunnenring" lies at the southern extremity of the territory of the Celtic Treveri tribe. In all probability constructed as early as the 5th/4th century BC (at the end of the Hallstatt culture) as a defence against the Germanic peoples, the fort experienced its heyday in the 2nd and 1st century BC (age of the Latène culture). In the 1st century BC it was abandoned for reasons as yet unknown. The site is triangular in shape. It is divided into a main fort and an outer fort. From east to west it extends 460m, from north to south 647m. This results in an overall area of 18.5 hectares, making the "Hunnenring" one of the largest Celtic fortifications ever built. The stone walls are around 2500m long and are built from approximately 240000 cubic metres of stones, which ...

Israel's Critical Security Needs for a Viable Peace It is a fact that Israel is quite vulnerable to attack in an age of ever-changing weaponery and increasingly dangerous foes. About 70% of its people and about 80% of its idustrial capacity are located in the narrow coastal strip between the Mediterranean Sea and the West Bank. Since the adjacent West Bank hills topographically dominate the basically flat and exposed coastal plain, this provides a potent advantage to attackers for observation, fire, and defense from an Israeli ground response. The West Bank poses a strategic advantage for attackers and would pose a constant threat to Israel's national infrastructure, including Ben-Gurion International Airport, the Trans-Israel Highway toll road, Israel's National Water Carrier, and its high-voltage electric power lines, if Israel did not maintain order there. The entire Jordan Rift Valley averages between 3000 to 4600 feet, constituting a natural physical barrier Yahuah has given Israel against attack, with only five east-west passes through which an attacking army can move, and each of them can be defended with relatively easily. Consequently, the Jordan Valley is viewed as the front line for Israel's self defense. Read more here: Thanks for listening, 777denny

Yeo_etal_JNeurophysiol_2011_Somatomotor.avi The intrinsic functional connectivity networks of human motor and somatosensory cortices are displayed for a 4-mm seed region that is gradually moved along the surface. The functional connectivity networks are estimated on the surface using resting-state functional MRI data from 1000 young adults. The seed region begins in the primary motor representation near the hand area. Note that the hand motor region is defined by strong local coupling including to the topographically matched regions of somatosensory cortex but largely lacks functional coupling to other distributed cortical regions. The transition between motor cortex and premotor cortex is evident as the seed region moves into a region at or near putative FEF. Unlike primary motor cortex, FEF is functional coupled to a distributed network that includes parietal association cortex. When the seed region moves along the lateral extent of motor cortex, clear topographic organization is observed with a marked transition between motor cortex near the face representation and cortex near the hand representation. The somatomotor cortex near the face representation also exhibits stronger interhemispheric coupling compared with the motor cortex near the hand / foot representations. The borders reflect estimates of networks from the 17-network parcellation of Yeo et al. (2011; see Figure 13). Histological estimates of motor areas can be found in Figure 19 in relation to the estimated functional networks, and details of the ...

Satellite Image Orthorectification Animation of Spatial Distortion for GIS Mapping To view full resolution animation of Orthorectification of IKONOS satellite image go here - Digital satellite images and aerial photographs play an important role in general mapping, as well as GIS data acquisition and visualization. First, they help provide a solid visual effect. Many people are more able to put spatial concepts into perspective when they see photos. In addition, the secondary and perhaps more vital role is to provide a basis for gathering spatial information. Examples of this are features such as roads, vegetation, and water. Before this information can be gathered in a manner that is useful for a mapping or GIS system, the satellite image data or aerial photographs must be prepared in a way that removes distortion from the image. This process is called orthorectification. Without this process, you wouldn't be able to do such functions as make direct and accurate measurements of distances, angles, positions, and areas. What is Orthorectification? The topographical variations in the surface of the earth and the tilt of the satellite or aerial sensor affect the distance with which features on the satellite or aerial image are displayed. The more topographically diverse the landscape, the more distortion inherent in the photograph. Image data acquired by airborne and satellite image sensors are affected by systematic sensor and platform-induced geometry errors, which introduce terrain distortions when the image sensor is not pointing ...

Kīlauea - The World's Most Active Volcano Kīlauea is the youngest and southeastern most volcano on the Big Island of Hawai`i. Topographically Kīlauea appears as only a bulge on the southeastern flank of Mauna Loa, and so for many years Kīlauea was thought to be a mere satellite of its giant neighbor, not a separate volcano. However, research over the past few decades shows clearly that Kīlauea has its own magma-plumbing system, extending to the surface from more than 60 km deep in the earth. Dramatic video is from the east and west vent of West Gap Pit,
