  • Hindu Cremation for my father Mr Rajdeva Narayan Sinha Anta literally means 'end', and eshti is 'wish, desire, seeking to go towards'. Antyeshti, or the funeral rites, is the last sanskara performed for an individual. It probably originated from the need to dispose off the body in a befittingly humane manner. This practical requirement later developed into a religious belief. It is believed that one conquers the earth through the sanskaras after birth and heaven through the sanskaras after death. Because of the belief in the existence of a soul, death signifies the end only of one birth, and preparations must be made for a safe journey to the next world. Food and other articles believed to be necessary on this journey are also provided to the dead. To this end, antyeshti serves to dispose of the body, equips the soul with what it needs for its journey to Yamaloka (see Moksha), and frees the soul's earthly survivors from the pollution caused by death. It is believed that until this ritual is performed, the soul is not sent on to the next world and remains on earth, where it flits about restlessly as a ghost (see Bhuta, Preta, Pishacha). Fire was also believed to cleanse the souls of the dead. Funeral rites differ marginally across the country, but most beliefs and practices are alike. When a person's death seems inevitable, he is made to lie with his head towards the south, since this is the direction Yama is believed to come from. Vedic mantra or verses from the Ramayana or Bhagavad Gita are recited to him ...

Elder Ephraim was born in 1927 in Volos, Greece, with a baptismal name of John. He grew up in poverty and helped his father at work, but always tried to emulate the pious life of his mother (whom he later tonsured a nun with the name of Theophano). He began to desire the monastic life around 14 years of age, but he did not get a blessing from his spiritual father to leave and become a monk until he was 19. When he arrived at Mount Athos, he became a disciple of Elder Joseph the Hesychast who tonsured him in 1948 and gave him the name Ephraim. Elder Ephraim was subsequently ordained a deacon, and then a priest. The life in the brotherhood under Elder Joseph was very austere and ascetical, and Elder Ephraim made great spiritual progress under his holy Elder. After Elder Joseph's ...

  • Tölzer Knabenchor - Psalm 130/129(Penitential Psalm).wmv From Orlando Di Lasso's penitantial Psalm The Penitential Psalms or Psalms of Confession is a name designation dating from the sixth century AD (Cassiodorus's commentary, and possibly earlier) given to Psalms 6, 32, 38, 51, 102, 130, and 143 (6, 31, 37, 50, 101, 129, and 142 in the Septuagint numbering), which are specially expressive of sorrow for sin. Four of these psalms were known as 'penitential psalms' by St. Augustine of Hippo in the early 400s. The name belonged originally to the fifty-first Psalm (Miserere), which was recited at the close of daily morning service in the primitive Church. Translations of the penitential psalms were undertaken by some of the greatest poets in Renaissance England, including Sir Thomas Wyatt, Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey, and Sir Philip Sidney. Prior to the suppression of the minor orders and tonsure in 1972 by Paul VI, the seven penitential psalms were assigned to new clerics after having been tonsured Perhaps the most famous musical setting of all seven is by Orlande de Lassus, with his Psalmi Davidis poenitentiales of 1584. There are also fine settings by Andrea Gabrieli and by Giovanni Croce. The Croce pieces are unique in being settings of Italian sonnet-form translations of the Psalms by Francesco Bembo. These were widely distributed; they were translated into English and published in London as Musica Sacra; and were even translated (back) into Latin and published in Nürnberg as Septem Psalmi poenitentiales. William Byrd set ...

  • Guillaume de Machaut: Qui es promesse/Ha! Fortune/Et non est qui adjuvet Guillaume de Machaut (c.1300-1377) We have no precise knowledge of Guillaume de Machaut's early years. He was probably born around 1300 in the diocese of Rheims in Champagne and he may have spent some time studying in Paris where, since the 13th century, the most sophisticated musical theories had been elaborated. A papal bull of Benedict XII dated 1335 states that for about twelve years Guillaume had been the almoner (clericus elimosinarius), secretary and familiar of John of Luxembourg, King of Bohemia whom he accompanied on his expeditions throughout Europe. This great feudal lord, King of Bohemia and stalwart and inalienable ally of the royal house of France, travelled the length and breadth of Europe in pursuit of his various military and political campaigns, and his secretary followed faithfully at his side throughout these often turbulent peregrinations. Machaut lived more like a trouvère than a cleric, traveling widely with and for his patrons (perhaps as far as Poland and Lithuania) and writing his poetry and music on command for courtly occasions. This of course explains the paucity of religious music in his output. Machaut was equally esteemed as both poet and musician during his lifetime; in fact, three-quarters of his surviving work is unaccompanied poetry, full of structural intricacies and love for anagram and other fiddles. His works were eagerly sought out by kings and nobles in France and elsewhere. In 1340 Machaut decided, however, without leaving the ...

Who was Saint Gerasimos? ------------------------- Born in the seventh century in the province of Lycia in Asia Minor, Gerasimos was tonsured a monk and lived in the valley of the Jordan. After some years, he established a monastery, not far from the Jordan River, that became a spiritual oasis in the desert. The monks of his order were highly respected for knowledge of dogmatic theology and their general wisdom of the faith. It is said of St. Gerasimos - "Often times, Gerasimos would pray at the banks of the Jordan River. One day, upon hearing the roar of a lion behind him, he turned and noticed that the lion had a huge sliver in his paw that was causing great pain. Gerasimos approached the lion and removed the sliver from the lion's swollen paw with no threat of harm being imparted by the lion. This done, Gerasimos simply turned to return to his monastery. To his surprise, the lion walked along side him back to the monastery.Gerasimos died at an old age in service to the Church. The lion so much loved Gerasimos that it is believed that he lamented his death as he was found dead at the foot of the grave of Gerasimos."

Also about how God complains that wicked priests abuse him with a sevenfold abuse, and how they turn the seven vestments, which they should have, into seven vices. Book 4 - Chapter 58 SAINT BRIDGET PATRON SAINT OF EUROPE PART II I honored the priests with a sevenfold honor, as it were, on seven steps. On the first step, they should be my standard-bearers and special friends by reason of the purity of their mind and body, for purity is the first position near to God, whom nothing foul can touch nor adorn. It was not strange that marital relation was permitted to the priests of the law during the time in which they were not offering sacrifice, for they were carrying the shell, not the nut itself. Now, however, with the coming of the truth and the disappearance of the figure, one must strive all the more fully for purity by as much as the nut is sweeter than the shell. As a sign of this kind of continence, first the hair is tonsured, so that desire for pleasure does not rule over spirit or flesh. On the second step, the clerics are ordained in order that they may become angelic men in all humility, for heaven is attained and the devil's pride is overcome through humility of mind and body. As a sign of such a step, the clerics are ...

The year is 2001. Both these moments fulfill the priestess' deepest desires: to have herself filmed performing the annual goat sacrifice to the Saivite God Paandi that her priest father once carried out, and to renounce her family life altogether. Using experimental film techniques that recall the work of Trinh Minh Ha, The Poojari's Daughter weaves dramatic footage of these rituals and temple life at Paandi Koyil with Rajathiamma's moving narration of her process, interviews with close family, and brief narrations by the filmmaker. Together, these create a vivid and unforgettably intimate portrait of the devotional worlds of this remarkable woman and South Indian Hinduism.

Elder Ephraim of Philotheou and St.Anthony's Monasteries Elder Ephraim was born in 1927 in Volos, Greece, originally with the name John, and the boy spent his childhood in poverty, helping his father at his work, but always following the pious example of his mother. At the age of 14 he began to yearn for monasticism, but it was not until he was 19 that his spiritual father gave him a blessing to go to Mount Athos. On his arrival there, he went straight to Elder Joseph, who accepted him into his brotherhood, and tonsured him nine months later, in 1948, with the name Ephraim. Out of obedience to his elder, Fr Ephraim was ordained a deacon and subsequently a priest. After Elder Joseph's repose in 1959, people aspiring to strict monasticism began gathering around Elder Ephraim, who himself was acquiring a reputation as a discerning spiritual guide. As his community grew, they moved to Provata, where there was a larger building, but this also soon proved too small. Then, in 1973, he was asked by the Supervisors of the Holy Mountain to move his brotherhood into the Holy Monastery of Philotheou and become its abbot. Because of his growing fame as an elder with great spiritual discernment, Philotheou became so full that the Supervisors of the Holy Mountain asked him to send groups of his disciples to repopulate three other monasteries on the Mountain: Xeropotamou, Konstamonitou, and Karakallou. He was also asked to repopulate the Great Lavra, but declined. In the second volume of his works, Life in the Spirit, Elder Aimilianos, Abbot ...

  • Ivan the Terrible - part 1 Ivan was the son of Vasili III, who had divorced his first wife in 1525 on the grounds that she was barren (he charged her with sorcery and had her forcibly tonsured as a nun). When Ivan was just three years old his father died from a boil and inflammation on his leg which developed into blood poisoning. Ivan was proclaimed the Grand Prince of Moscow at his father's request. At first, his mother Elena Glinskaya acted as a regent, but she died of what many believe to be assassination via poison[7] when Ivan was only eight years old. She was replaced as regent by boyars from the Shuisky family until Ivan assumed power in 1544. According to his own letters, Ivan and his younger brother Yuri customarily felt neglected and offended by the mighty boyars from the Shuisky and Belsky families. Ivan was crowned tsar with Monomakh's Cap at the Cathedral of the Dormition at age six*** on 16 January 1547. Despite calamities triggered by the Great Fire of 1547, the early part of his reign was one of peaceful reforms and modernization. Ivan revised the law code (known as the sudebnik), created a standing army (the streltsy), established the Zemsky Sobor or assembly of the land, a public, consensus-building assembly, the council of the nobles (known as the Chosen Council), and confirmed the position of the Church with the Council of the Hundred Chapters, which unified the rituals and ecclesiastical regulations of the entire country. • Deepika Padukone Short Haircut - For Karthik Calling Karthik Deepika Padukone chopped her long hair for her latest film, Karthik Calling Karthik. This is a rare footage. We never get videos of Bollywood girls having their haircut, but luckily we have this one. However, the actress was hell bent on having a hair cut only when the director tonsured his head, something which the latter declined as she maintains, He didnt do that but he saw to it that he was present in the salon so that I dont back off at the last moment. Deepikas new look is already getting rave review as she quips, Everybody says it looks good on me and makes me look younger and further said, The scriptwriter had a certain image in mind when he wrote my character Shonali. So I had to do justice to the role. She is looking beautiful in this film and specially in song Uff Teri Adaa. (Get the song from here, bit.ly or bollymp3
