The divine Nektarios of Aegina, is one of the most widely known of Greek Orthodox Saints. He was born on October 1st, 1846 in Silyvria.His parents brought him up in a manner pleasing to God, and did what their very limited means allowed for his formal education. Having completed elementary school in his hometown, he left for the great city of Constantinople at the age of 14. There, he found employment as a shop assistant and was able to earn a meager living. As well as regularly attending the Divine Liturgy, he also read the Holy Scriptures and Writings of the Orthodox Elders of the Church on a daily basis. In 1866, at the age of 20, Anastasios went to the island of Chios, where he was appointed a teacher. After 7 years, he entered into the local monastery, under the care of the venerable elder Pachomios. After 3 years as a novice Athanasios was tonsured a Monk and given the name Lazarus. A year later, he was ordained a Deacon and received the name Nektarios. Elder Pachomios, and a wealthy local benefactor convinced the young monk to complete his high school studies in Athens. Antyeshti, or the funeral rites, is the last sanskara performed for an individual. It probably originated from the need to dispose off the body in a befittingly humane manner. This practical requirement later developed into a religious belief. It is believed that one conquers the earth through the sanskaras after birth and heaven through the sanskaras after death. Because of the belief in the existence of a soul, death signifies the end only of one birth, and preparations must be made for a safe journey to the next world. Food and other articles believed to be necessary on this journey are also provided to the dead. To this end, antyeshti serves to dispose of the body, equips the soul with what it needs for its journey to Yamaloka (see Moksha), and frees the soul's earthly survivors from the pollution caused by death. It is believed that until this ritual is performed, the soul is not sent on to the next world and remains on earth, where it flits about restlessly as a ghost (see Bhuta, Preta, Pishacha). Fire was also believed to cleanse the souls of the dead. Funeral rites differ marginally across the country, but most beliefs and practices are alike. When a person's death seems inevitable, he is made to lie with his head towards the south, since this is the direction Yama is believed to come from. He resides in Arizona at St. Anthony's Greek Orthodox Monastery. Elder Ephraim has been a priest-monk for almost 60 years and has served as an elder for more than 50 years. He was a disciple of Elder Joseph the Hesychast of Mount Athos and lived in monastic obedience to him for 12 years until his Elder's repose in 1959. Elder Ephraim was born in 1927 in Volos, Greece, with a baptismal name of John. This great feudal lord, King of Bohemia and stalwart and inalienable ally of the royal house of France, travelled the length and breadth of Europe in pursuit of his various military and political campaigns, and his secretary followed faithfully at his side throughout these often turbulent peregrinations. Machaut lived more like a trouvère than a cleric, traveling widely with and for his patrons (perhaps as far as Poland and Lithuania) and writing his poetry and music on command for courtly occasions. Who was Saint Gerasimos? ------------------------- Born in the seventh century in the province of Lycia in Asia Minor, Gerasimos was tonsured a monk and lived in the valley of the Jordan. After some years, he established a monastery, not far from the Jordan River, that became a spiritual oasis in the desert. The monks of his order were highly respected for knowledge of dogmatic theology and their general wisdom of the faith. It is said of St. Gerasimos - "Often times, Gerasimos would pray at the banks of the Jordan River. One day, upon hearing the roar of a lion behind him, he turned and noticed that the lion had a huge sliver in his paw that was causing great pain. Gerasimos approached the lion and removed the sliver from the lion's swollen paw with no threat of harm being imparted by the lion. This done, Gerasimos simply turned to return to his monastery. To his surprise, the lion walked along side him back to the monastery.Gerasimos died at an old age in service to the Church. Because of his growing fame as an elder with great spiritual discernment, Philotheou became so full that the Supervisors of the Holy Mountain asked him to send groups of his disciples to repopulate three other monasteries on the Mountain: Xeropotamou, Konstamonitou, and Karakallou. Strangely, it was not realised as she had no symptoms. When Shanti saw the black lice in her white hair, she was startled to see mummy's scalp teeming with hundreds of these insects. Community leaders reminded the activists and Media about the importance of Homeland for KP's(Panun Kashmir) and a fresh oath was taken to fight for the cause of KP Homeland..(Panun kashmir-homeland for KP's is a demand of Kashmiri Hindus in exile,It will be a union territory under constitution of India without article 370)
St.Herman of Alaska Monastery, Platina, CA The St. Herman of Alaska Brotherhood is a monastic-missionary Orthodox Christian brotherhood that is part of the Western American Diocese of the Serbian Orthodox Church. The Brotherhood was established in 1963 with the blessing of St. John (Maximovitch), Archbishop and miracle-worker of Shanghai and San Francisco, of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia. It opened an Orthodox book and icon shop in San Francisco, next to the Holy Virgin "Joy of All Who Sorrow" Cathedral, and began to publish the bi-monthly journal The Orthodox Word, as well as books in both English and Russian. In 1969, the brotherhood moved to the wilderness of northern California, near the village of Platina, and there began to live a monastic life while continuing to publish Orthodox books and magazines. The founding members were tonsured monks in 1970, and their community became known as the St. Herman of Alaska Monastery. One of the brotherhood's founders, Hieromonk Seraphim Rose (1934-1982), has become renowned throughout the Orthodox world for his writings, which are noted for their faithfulness to Orthodox patristic tradition when addressing modern issues and problems.
