Thermocouple Interface This video demonstrates the functioning of our signal conditioning board, and a microcontroller to measure temperature. This is out final project for ECT 542 Process Control. The class is taught by Dr. Yuetong Lin at Indiana State University. Without proper amplification and filtering (signal conditioning), the signal from a thermocouple would be too weak to measure with a typical ***og to digital converter. Calibrating this thing was quite a task. After we got the hardware set to provide the correct output voltages at 0 and 100°C, we hooked up the microcontroller board and shot this video in one take. The memory card got full and cut us short, but it seemed to be enough, and kept us under 5 min. Copper and Steel Thermocouple A thermocouple made from ordinary copper and steel wire can generate enough current to deflect a compass needle. Compensating for the earth's magnetic field can make the compass sensitive enough to deflect when the thermocouple is heated with my fingers. I noticed a peculiarity in the copper and steel thermocouple while applying heat to a single junction connected to a voltmeter. For this experiment, I used a welded junction instead of a soldered one as used in the video. As I raised the temperature of the junction, the voltage reading would also increase as expected. When the temperature reached a certain point well above that of boiling water, I would observe approx 1.5 millivolts positive. But, as the temperature increased above this point, the voltage output from the junction would start to decrease until a point was reached that gave a reading of zero voltage. As the temperature increased further above this point the voltage output from the junction would start to increase again but with opposite polarity until a reading of approx 1.5 millivolts minus was read. I did not apply any more heat at this point because the junction was red hot and appeared to be near the melting point of the copper.

Thermocouple calibration (outsmarting the transmitter's compensation circuit) The Fluke model 744 calibrator is "smart" enough to "outsmart" the reference-compensation function built inside the Roesmount temperature transmitter. This is necessary during calibration because there is no reference junction in the circuit to be compensated for. The transmitter's compensation feature, therefore, only "gets in the way" of the calibration. Thus, the Fluke calibrator is designed to subtract the reference junction (compensation) voltage from its output so that the transmitter sees the same millivoltage it would see if connected to an actual thermocouple at the actual calibration temperature. Fluidized Bed Combustor -- part 2 (prototype thermocouple problems) Our home-made fluidized bed combustion furnace starting up on wood pellets, complete with a wood pellet screw feeder based on a large wood drill bit being turned by a windshield wiper motor. For some reason, our thermocouple temperature transmitter keeps shedding to "burnout" mode on some occasions when the pellet screw feeder motor runs. We think it's electrical noise from the drive motor coupling to the thermocouple wires, which then drives the transmitter crazy. Some more diagnosis with an oscilloscope should confirm this hypothesis.
