Marconi B6034 MF Transmitters final shut-down at Brookmans Park Transmitting Station. Following 31 years service, the last of the Brookmans Park Marconi B6034 50kW MF broadcast transmitters are closed down for the start of re-engineering to Nautel NX100s. They had produced a total of 240000 hours of reliable operation and this type of transmitter is still in service at other stations, including the similar 28kW B6046 LF version. The B6034 is an Impedance Modulated transmitter with AMC using 2 of 4CX1500B tetrode valves in cathode follower mode (audio) and 2 of 4CX35000C tetrodes for the final RFs.

6P3S Radio Valve 6P3S Radio Valve In the Soviet times some goods, especially electronic components, were in extreme deficiency for some unexplainable reasons. This resulted in the appearance of the so-called legendary components. With their help some enthusiasts were able to assemble designs which were not supposed to have these components on them. A vivid example of such component is radio valve 6P3S. 6P3S is an output beam tetrode with an indirectly heated oxide cathode. Its heating voltage is 6.3 V. The maximum anode voltage is 400 V. The maximum power dissipated on the anode is 20.5 W. Amplification coefficient is 13.5. Transconductance is 6 mA/V.The valve works in any position. It has a glass design of cylindrical or figured shape. Lifespan is at least 500 hours. It has a 6-pin octal base with the alignment pin. It weighs no more than 70 g. The valve was used for amplifying low-frequency power. It was used in single-cycle and push-pull output stages of receivers and low-frequency amplifiers. The valve was also used as a high-frequency generator in tape recorders, transmitting devices, and other equipment. Its foreign ***og designs are 6L6, 6CN5, and EL34. This valve became legendary because unlike other valves it was sold almost everywhere. But the most important thing was that you could assemble quite a powerful short-wave radio transmitter from this valve. This was actively used by radio pirates. Valve amplifiers at anode current decreasing: Principle of operation In vacuum-tube amplifiers I created, I used the usual high-voltage lamps with anode low voltage. However, after the anode current was reduced, the slope of the tube characteristics changed, and its amplification dropped. But there are ways of feeding tubes with low anode voltage, which worsen their parameters to a lesser degree. For a tetrode or a pentode to operate at low anode voltage, you should do the following.

EMI 319 13 x 8 loudspeaker speaker movie The EMI 319 is not to be ill-judged from this up-close demo as cone tweeters have narrow dispersion of sound, whizzers are worst yet with top end said to be 'as narrow as a pencil' in the highest range. So back then folks with whizzers satisfied themselves the high end was there at a certain listening position, speakers toed in, then just didn't bother with it too much. Such EMI speakers need heard in good listening rooms to experience the depth of sonic picture they describe. But their corny appearance may take some getting used to, like the music of their day! A look at Lowther harman/kardon drivers in the link below show aluminum and bits of foam on the cones reminiscent of 1960s EMI. 319 are not disco speakers, but about creating 'the closest approach to the original recorded sound' - more than a 'Live' feel and better than Home Theater, albeit with very limited treble dispersion, EMI 319 give extreme realism in a tiny critical listening area, outside of which the speakers may sound more like consoles, being limited in their HF frequency response. Peter Walker hinted at this by talking about 'a window on the performance', his own QUAD ESL-57 suffered the same tiny window of hi-End quality where the EMI 319 bass is of the deepest, most lifelike possible! You need an amplifier like the harman/kardon A 402 already warmed up, to get these effects and an A 402 needs refurbished, as the solder gets very dry. But it has the 'stiff power supply' needed for QUAD ESL-57 ...

The Largest Neuron of my grad school career I recorded this neuron in 2008 using a 4-wire tetrode. The peak to peak voltage was ~800uv. This is a Medium Spiny Neuron (MSN).

2 Valve Superhet using car valves and Altoids tins Using a 12FX8 and a 12AL8 12V HT car valve, a ferrite rod aerial, two Altoid tins and a block of wood I constructed a reasonable MW superhet with loud and reasonable audio. I spent more time aligning and fiddling with it to get it to work than I did in constructing it - be warned if you too want to make a simple superhet! The 12FX8 is a Heptode-triode and the 12AL8 is a triode-power tetrode. Both were developed for car radios and use the 12V car battery voltage directly for the HT. Using these two valves allows you to make a similar set to a five-valver (IF oscillator, mixer, IF amp, first audio and final audio). I used a silicon diode for the detector. Go to /on4nic/12V-2Valve-MW-Superhet for the circuit diagram and some photographs. Most of the parts came from radio rallies and eBay. Next version will be for an amateur radio band and will include a BFO for CW and SSB.
