American Scientist and Winner of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine: George Wald Interview George Wald (November 18, 1906 -- April 12, 1997) was an American scientist who is best known for his work with pigments in the retina. He won a share of the 1967 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Haldan Keffer Hartline and Ragnar Granit. Wald was born in New York City to Isaac Wald and Ernestine Rosenmann, Jewish immigrant parents. He was a member of the first graduating class of the Brooklyn Technical High School in New York in 1922. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from New York University in 1927 and his PhD in zoology from Columbia University in 1932. After graduating, he received a travel grant from the US National Research Council. Wald used this grant to work in Germany with Otto Heinrich Warburg where he identified vitamin A in the retina. Wald then went on to work in Zurich, Switzerland with the discoverer of vitamin A, Paul Karrer. Wald then worked briefly with Otto Fritz Meyerhof in Heidelberg, Germany, but left Europe for the University of Chicago in 1933 when Adolf Hitler came to power and life in Europe became more dangerous for Jews. In 1934, Wald went to Harvard University where he became an instructor, then a professor. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1950 and in 1967 was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for his discoveries in vision. In 1966 he was awarded the Frederic Ives Medal by the OSA. He was married twice: in 1931 to Frances Kingsley and in 1958 to the biochemist Ruth Hubbard. He had two ...

North Entrance, Dover The weakest link in fortress defence is often the entrances, so it is hardly surprising that much ingenuity goes into their design. The North Entrance to the Western Heights was the nearest to the town of Dover and most convenient for access, either for supplies or by an attacking force. Accordingly, its defences were substantial, comprising two bridges and a tunnel. The entrance dates from the Royal Commission period of the 1860s, and superseded the entrance dating from Napoleonic times - a single bridge over a ditch. The two bridges crossed the twin ditches (or lines), which were separated by an earth bank -- the tenaille. Neither bridge was fixed. The first of the two had a drop-down section hinged at the tenaille end, while the second had a section that could be raised. The roadway cut through the tenaille was 'S' shaped, so that artillery fire could not be brought to bear on the entrance to the tunnel from the approach road. Having crossed the two bridges, the road entered a tunnel, with a pair of Created with MAGIX Video deluxe MX Plus

Part 2: The North Entrance, Western Heights, Dover, UK The 'North Entrance' to Dover's Napoleonic defenses embedded into the Western Heights consists of two bridge/drawbridge combinations and a 60-yard long road tunnel. Only the 'ribs' of the bridges are left and the tunnel, whose surface is made from wooden blocks to prevent sparks, is blocked at both ends. This video (2 of 2) has an opening scene of the Second World War pillbox, to the east of the North Entrance, shown at the end of Part 1 which can be seen here: The next sequence shows the top of the old North Military Road ("Military Hill"), the outer bridge, and the 150 x 20 yard brick-faced outwork known as a "Tenaille". From inside the moats: the entry point to the moat system itself and then shots of the underside of the outer bridge, the pillbox again, the underside of inner bridge, the beams of the road tunnel drawbridge, and gunrooms. From on top of the tenaille: the inner bridge, the 's-shaped' road, the outer bridge; the east end of the tenaille and then the west end, showing the southern wall of the detached bastion (North Centre Bastion, Dead Man's Island, The Smokey). A few seconds of me (sorry about that!) and then a final sequence of the outer bridge and the top of the old North Military Road. [Army, History, Geography] Various still photos of the North Entrance are at: Dover is in the county of Kent in England (UK). My science research interests (evolution and psychology, esp. the archaeotrauma) are at: www.evopsychology ...

CATASTROIKA - 2012 [HD Multi subtitles How bankers and politicians take down nations one after the other and buy up their resources with fraudulent debt derivatives. ______________ It was at the beginning of 1989 when the French academic Jacques Rupnik sat at his desk, in order to prepare a report on the state of the economic reforms in Mikhail Gorbatsov's Soviet Union. The term that he used in describing the death rattle of the empire was "Catastroika". In Yeltsin's time, when Russia instituted maybe the biggest and least successful privatization experiment in the history of humanity, a group of Guardian reports assigned a different meaning to Rupnik's term. "Catastroika" became synonym of the country's complete destruction by market forces; the sell off of public property; and the steep deterioration of citizens' living standards. Now, Catastroika's unit of measurement was unemployment, social impoverishment, declining life expectancy, as well as the creation of a new cast of oligarchs, who took over the country's reins. A few years later, a similar effort to massively privatize public property in unified Germany (which is presented as a model for Greece) created millions of unemployed and some of the biggest scandals in European history. It is this "Catastroika" that is coming soon to Greece; to "Europe's last Soviet Republic" as the MPs and the ministers of its former "socialist" government liked to call it. Catastroika is the logical aftermath and continuation of "Debtocracy". Therefore, the logical ...
