Betty's Trip to Boone Tavern for Lunch with Rick--NO RECIPE-- In this video, Betty and Rick have lunch at Boone Tavern Restaurant in Berea, Kentucky. Boone Tavern Restaurant is owned by Berea College, and many of the workers at the restaurant are students at the college. The college began in the 1800's, accepting promising students, but charging no tuition or cost for room and board. To make up for this financial assistance, each student works up to ten hours per week at one of the 130 or so jobs at the college, some of which are at the restaurant. The restaurant itself was built in 1909, and has been in operation ever since, except for closing down for renovations a few times over the years. This restaurant is quite historic and has been visited by many famous people, from President Calvin Coolidge to the Dalai Lama, and many poets, like Robert Frost, and businessmen, like Henry Ford. Rick and I have had meals at Boone Tavern many times over the years, since it is only about one-half hour's drive from our home. We had an evening meal last fall that we featured in bettyskitchen. This time we decided to show what lunch is like at Boone Tavern. The menu is shorter and the items are lighter, in general. Spoonbread is served with all lunch and dinner meals, and Boone Tavern is quite famous for their spoonbread. Rick and I began with hot spoonbread with butter. I then ordered a pimiento cheese-topped hamburger with loaded baked potato salad and iced tea, while Rick chose the fried catfish dinner, which came with French fries,coleslaw ...

Sally Brown - Planxty 1980 Abbey Tavern Christy springs this request for an old Sweeney's "Sea Shanty" on Andy which results in everyone cracking up! The banter at the start of this video is an edited version of the original 1980 recording, where after Christy asks "Do you remember how it goes", Andy goes on at some length to explain how this song was a "Sea Shanty" and that sailors would sing this in unison whilst "Pulling on their Capstans"!!!!! Donal & Christy found this hilarious and they were obviously in no fit state to continue to play, so to quieten things down, Andy went on to describe how he actually played in The Abbey Tavern, with Sweeney's Men, and in the middle of a long ballad, Johnny Moynihan leaned over to him and whispered, "Andy, do you know there's not a single person in the room listening to you". He then said that he was "delighted that Sweeney's Men were popular today (1980) as nobody was interested back in the 60's." After this long introduction, Christy fired back with "OK, Andy, off you go!", resulting in them all cracking up again!

Southall Riots -Hambrough Tavern burnt down! Southall became a battlefield in July 1981 as Asian youths and the police fought. Cars and police vehicles were overturned and set on fire, a public house was set ablaze apparently by a petrol bomb, and other fire bombs were thrown at police as Asian youths reacted to an incident started by skinheads. Scotland Yard said 40 police officers had been injured. The riot, just over two months after Brixton, began in The Broadway, Southall, yesterday evening. When it ended shortly after midnight, Scotland Yard said there had been 21 arrests and 40 policemen had been injured, one seriously. There was no precise figure for the number of civilian casualties. The police said a group of skinheads smashed several windows and then ran off to a public house where a discotheque was being held. Crowds of Asian youths — Southall has a large Indian and Pakistani community — gathered outside the Hambrough public house and the police arrived to disperse them. One witness said the Asians were incensed that the police seemed to be protecting the skinheads. The fighting began while the police were trying to keep the two sides separate. Brick walls were smashed to provide ammunition and shop windows, telephone kiosks and bus shelters were also damaged. Hundreds of police were brought into the area as, two hours after the fighting had started, the Hambrough Tavern, where the skinheads had fled, was still alight.

Betty's Boone Tavern Broccoli-Apple Salad In this video, Betty demonstrates how to make Broccoli-Apple Salad. This recipe was inspired by the Broccoli-Apple Salad that I had for brunch during our recent anniversary celebration at Boone Tavern Hotel Restaurant in Berea, Kentucky. Ingredients: 2 cups fresh broccoli florets, cut into bite-sized pieces (You may steam these for 4 minutes to soften them.) 1 cup red bell pepper strips, about ¼-inch by 1 ¼-inches (You may steam these for 2 minutes to soften them.) 1 medium-sized Granny Smith apple, unpeeled and cut into slivers that will fit on a fork 1 cup red seedless grapes (cut in halves) 2/3 cup Miracle Whip salad dressing (You may use any variety of Miracle Whip or mayonnaise or substitute coleslaw dressing.) After steaming 2 cups of broccoli florets and 1 cup red bell pepper strips, place them in a mixing bowl, along with 1 thinly sliced Granny Smith apple, and 1 cup red seedless grape halves. Stir to distribute evenly. Add 2/3 cup Miracle Whip salad dressing, and fold it into the fruit/vegetable mixture. Spoon the mixture into a nice serving bowl. Serve immediately, or cover and chill until ready to serve. I loved this salad at Boone Tavern, and I think this is a pretty close replica! Enjoy!!! --Betty

The Abbey Tavern Singers - We're Off To Dublin In The Green Issued in Canada March 1966 on Arc 1144, and in the US September 1966 on Hanna Barbera 496. The Abbey Tavern Singers are not Canadians. They are from Howth, Dublin, Ireland. The group was formed in 1962 when Mrs. Minnie Scott-Lennon, of the Tavern, thought it would be a good idea to have musicians and singers play in a relaxed, singalong atmosphere. Members of the ensemble were : Margaret Monks (vocals), Michael O'Connell (vocals), Tess Nolan (vocals), Mary Sheehan (vocals; replaced Nolan), Brian O'Rourke (banjo), John O'Brien (guitar), Bill Powers (banjo-mandolin), Tommy Rick (Illin pipes), Seamus Gallagher (fiddle), Joe O'Leary (fiddle), and Paddy Joseph "PJ" Downes (spoons). They performed regularly at the Abbey Tavern, and made an album in the UK for Pye in 1965. Their next album, in 1966, "We're Off To Dublin In The Green," was released in Canada by Arc Records (of which Yorkville Records was a subsidiary label). This song was originally featured in a TV commercial for Carling beer. The single first appeared in RPM on March 10, 1966, then disappeared to return on August 8th at #100, working its way up to spend the first two weeks of October at #4. It reached #2 on CHUM Toronto. Americans took notice of this, and the master was licensed by Hanna Barbera, who issued it in the US in September 1966. It spent two weeks on the Hot 100, and only made #96.
