react3D Electric - Tangible User Interface This thesis explores the benefits of tangible user interfaces (TUI) in the context of a certain application and demonstrates the abilities and attributes of this tangible interaction through a practical project. The author presents outstanding features and characteristics, interaction models and terminologies as well as some real life examples to discuss the functionality and advantages of this interface concept. This concept of a physical interaction for an interactive learning and experimentation platform uses the characteristics of the TUI for media based learning, in order to build up cognitive structures by simultaneous demand of mental and motor abilities. The concept contains, next to the design of the control interface and its functions, a creative discussion of the topic in the context of a concrete project. The practical project covers an interactive installation for the simulation of simple electric circuits and switching types by the combination of different material construction units. Fundamental values such as voltage, amperage, resistance and power of an electric circuit can be calculated interactively, in order to make characteristics and connections of electricity visible. The simple and intuitive interaction gives users the possibility to experiment risk free with electricity in order to build up their knowledge or solve tasks. The concept shows the possibilities of a tangible user interface for the communication between humans and computers, as well as ...

Tangible Media for Design and Inspiration May 30, 2008 lecture by Hiroshi Ishii for the Stanford University Human Computer Interaction Seminar (CS547). Tangible Bits seeks to realize seamless interfaces between humans, digital information, and the physical environment by giving physical form to digital information, making bits directly manipulable and perceptible. Their goal is to invent new design media for artistic expression as well as for scientific ***ysis, taking advantage of the richness of human senses and skills - as developed through our lifetime of interaction with the physical world - as well as the computational reflection enabled by real-time sensing and digital feedback. Slurp Talk at CHI'08 Jamie Zigelbaum presents Slurp, a digital eyedropper. In the alt.chi track at the ACM Conference on Human Factors in Computing (CHI 2008) in Florence Italy. Slurp is tangible interface for manipulating abstract digital information as if it were water. Taking the form of an eyedropper, Slurp can extract (slurp up) and inject (squirt out) pointers to digital objects. We have created Slurp to explore the use of physical metaphor, feedback, and affordances in tangible interface design when working with abstract digital media types. Our goal is to privilege spatial relationships between devices and people while providing new physical manipulation techniques for ubiquitous computing environments. Slurp was made by Jamie Zigelbaum, Adam Kumpf, Alejandro Vazquez, and Hiroshi Ishii in the Tangible Media Group tangible.media.mit.edu at the MIT Media Lab. See http for more info.

Tangible Functional Programming Google Tech Talks November, 7 2007 ABSTRACT We present a user-friendly approach to unifying program creation and execution, based on a notion of "tangible values" (TVs), which are visual and interactive manifestations of pure values, including functions. Programming happens by gestural composition of TVs. Our goal is to give end-users the ability to create parameterized, composable content without imposing the usual abstract and linguistic working style of programmers. We hope that such a system will put the essence of programming into the hands of many more people, and in particular people with artistic/visual creative style. In realizing this vision, we develop algebras for visual presentation and for "deep" function application, where function and argument may both be nested within a structure of tuples, functions, etc. Composition gestures are translated into chains of combinators that act simultaneously on statically typed values and their visualizations. Speaker: Conal Elliott Most of my research is aimed at supporting the creation of interactive synthetic media content, including computer animation, human-computer interaction, images, 2D and 3D geometry, and programmable shaders. In all cases, I aim to preserve or improve on the flexibility and performance of mainstream programming approaches, while greatly simplifying the creation process. Synthetic media programs are almost always implemented in sequential, imperative (often object-oriented) languages. My ...

Slurp: locative media In this video I demonstrate how slurp can be used to access information stored in digital tags on any object. Slurp vibrates when it senses a signal and is then used like an eyedropper to grab and display content. Tom Gerhardt - Mud Tub, Tangible Interface 2009 By sloshing, squishing, pulling, punching, etc, in a tub of mud (yes, wet dirt), users control games, simulators, and expressive tools; interacting with a computer in a new, completely organic, way. Born out of a motivation to close the gap between our bodies and the digital world, the Mud Tub frees the traditional computer interaction model of its rigidity, allowing humans to use their highly developed sense of touch, and creative thinking skills in a more natural way. The Mud Tub occupies a space similar to other experimental human-computer interfaces, like, multi-touch surfaces, body controllers, augmented reality systems, etc, which push the boundaries of codified interaction models, and drive the development of innovative software applications. Beyond its role as a research topic, the Mud Tub also exists as an open-sourced hardware/software platform on which interactive artists and designers explore new methods for creating and displaying their work. Where the Mud Tub differs from the field though, is its use of a richly textured organic substance that takes advantage of human ingenuity and complex sensory ability; pioneering a new open-ended interaction typology where prescriptive goals are centered around states, rather than specific user manipulation. Ie, instead of having an user click a mouse button with their pointer finger, or gesture with two fingers in a specific way, he or she is simply asked to create a state in the Mud Tub surface, which can be ...

Augmented Reality demo This is a rather old (from 2004/2005 demonstration of tangible augmented reality software. How it works, essentially, is that those little cards have specific encoded images(sort of like a barcode) that the computers camera "sees" and has certain properties. Some behave as buttons, some display objects and others are used to further interact with the other cards. The only thing that is "really" there on the table are the little cards and the guy's hands. Everything else is only seen through 'eye' of the camera (in this case its a camera mounted on a PDA). You're already seeing some real world applications.

Reactable - Bjork - Collaborative Tangible Interface Reactable - Electronic Tangible Interface www.VOLUMEN11.com - ONE LOUDER Reactable is a collaborative electronic musical instrument with a tangible interface based on a table, and inspired by modular synthesizers of the sixties. It was developed by the Music Technology Group at the University Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona. Multiple simultaneous users share total control over the instrument by moving and rotating physical objects on the surface of a bright circular table. Manipulating these objects, representatives of the classical components of a modular synthesizer, users can create complex and dynamic sound typologies, generators, filters and modulators, in a kind of tangible modular synthesizer. There are only 5 reacTable, which included it was sold to Icelandic singer Bjork.

MIT Media Lab - TaPuMa: Tangible Public Map TaPuMa is a digital, tangible public map that allows people to use their own belongings or the everyday objects they carry with them to access relevant, just-in-time information and to find locations of places or people. TaPuMa envisions that conventional maps can be augmented by using the unique identities and affordances of the everyday objects. The TaPuMa system uses a table-top environment where map and dynamic content is projected on the table. A camera mounted above the table identifies and tracks the locations of the objects on the surface. A software program identifies and registers the location of objects on the table. On the basis of identifications of the objects, the software program provides relevant information visualization to be shown on the table. The projector augments the table and objects on the table with projected digital information from overhead along with the map. The project explores a novel interaction mechanism where physical objects are used as interfaces to digital information. TaPuMa allows users to acquire information through tangible media, the things they carry.

The Tangible Kingdom The Tangible Kingdom: Creating Incarnational Community. The Tangible Kingdom helps open a window into that uneasiness many feel when what we've read in scripture verses does not line up with our experiences with religion or church. Jesus' news about his kingdom was a wild, life-reorienting message. It changed people, cities, and the social fabric. It was nothing like the heart-shriveling religion common in our present-day church experience. Watch as a normal God-searching man finds hope, as he sees a glimpse of the kingdom in a community of friends, around a table, and everywhere he goes. Go to http to order the book and find friends.

Object-Based Tangible Interactions with the ReadingGlove UPDATE: Version 2.0 of the Reading Glove is complete. View the video here: The Reading Glove is an RFID based interface for interaction with tangible objects. It allows interactors to manipulate and handle tagged objects in order to access digital information that has been embedded in them. Each object in this interaction is marked with a unique RFID tag. These unique identifiers allow the object to be associated with specific digital information, in the form of audio, projected visualizations, and text. The glove is comprised of an Arduino Lillypad Microcontroller, an Xbee Series two wireless radio, and an Innovations ID-12 RFID reader, embedded in the palm of a soft fabric glove. The Reading Glove transmits the Tag information to a computer running Max MSP, which uses the tag information to trigger digital events. Read more about it here: See the New Video Here:

AR Toy Car Making: Tangible Cube Interface based Screw-driving interaction Screw-Driving (SD) technique is based on the real world condition where two or more real objects are joined together using a screw and screw-driver. If a person turns the screw-driver clockwise, the two target objects are fastened, while a counterclockwise rotation loosens two targets that are already screwed together. The SD method based on two tangible cube interface uses this same metaphor to join virtual objects with visual guidance (active axis with bounding box and directional corner buttons). The screw-driving technique can also support axis change by the help of additional button input so 3D positioning is also possible. Here we show an example to make an AR toy Car
