Taguan is situated between Guan Mountain Ridge ( the ridge houses the Yakou tunnel, and is the gateway between west and east Taiwan ) and Mt. Guan 3668m which is the highest mountain in south Taiwan. Mt. Taguan's trail is only 2.2km ( 4.4km return ) but is probably more physically draining then Mt. Guan, itself. The trail is very steep and slippery in many areas, however, the views are breath-taking, both along the trail and at the top. This is the best place to view the southern end of both Taiwan's Central Mountain Range and Yushan National Park. ADDIONAL: The western branch of the Southern Cross-Island Highway from Meiyakou ( Yushan visitors Center ) to Yakou tunnel at the top of the Central Mountain range is closed closed to the general public. Between Heaven's village and Kaiguan ( Sacred Tree area ), there are some major landslides, and the road ends about 2km farther along! There are many landslides between this area and the Yakou Tunnel at the top of the range. This section of the Highway was badly damaged by Typhoon Morakot, 2009 08 08, and, it may not be re-opened to general traffic until later next year 2011, depending on prevailing damage. Some landslides in this area are servere, and each time heavy rain arrives, these landslides grow in size thus covering over all previous attempts to repair the Highway beneath them. MT. Guanshan was originally used as an east-west migration route by the Luanshe and Chunshe, branches of the Bunon Tribe, who lived in the mountains between Kaohsiung and Taidong. During the Japanese Occupation, the Japanese built a Cross Island Trail through through Guanshan in order to control the Indigionous People. When the Chinese government recovered Taiwan, the Nationalist Government built the Cross-Island Highway along the trail.
