  • Agúzate TV: Viento de Agua @ Las Tablas Agúzate TV had the pleasure of spending time with the members of Viento de Agua during the weekend of August 30th, 2008 in Chicago. They came to Las Tablas the night before their performance at the Fiesta Boricua in Humboldt Park. Here is a clip of what happened that night. Viento de Agua is a breathtaking original Latin dance band with a groundbreaking new sound. Viento de Agua is a Puerto Rican phrase used to describe the damp air that precedes a heavy storm. The traditional Afro-Puerto Rican rhythms of bomba and plena are fused with other Afro-Caribbean rhythms and jazz creating a new contemporary style. The result of that merge is an explosive sound that seduces the dancer and stimulates the sophisticated listener. Hector "Tito" Matos one of Viento de Agua's directors explains the concept, "The main purpose is to disseminate our original way of performing these rhythms not only to the Latino community but to the rest of the World Music audience."

  • Zakir Hussain Tabla & Taal Demonstration - Part 1 of 4 Over the past 5 months I have spiritually profited from the enormous generosity of the youtube community by posting tabla, indian classical, & ghazals compositions. This video is my first contribution as a "thank you" to everyone who took the time to post and share their precious videos. Today the title "Ustad" is being applied to almost anyone who can do something better than the reviewer. In the true sense of the word, Zakir Hussain is the exemplification of an "Ustad" because he's not only mechanically crisp and well-balanced on both drums, but uses the tabla as an extension of his mind to compliment the current mood to stir & stun audiences. Some have better clarity, some have faster hands, but indeed there are only a handful of tabla players that can hold the stage with Zakir and match his "mitaas" or sweetness. He's truly in a class by himself. In this piece, you will see Zakir's comical and fun-loving personality as well as his mastery of the tabla and Indian sangeet in general. In the world of taal, he's what you would call the "total package". Hope you enjoy the video. It's all in Hindi though. More information about this video can be found at this address:

  • Tablas Thank you for all the helpful comments (even the rude ones). I haven't been playing much because I have been living abroad without my tablas. So here I tried to play on top of Leftfield, to help me with my counting. I try to work with the 4 beat of the song, and double up to do 8 beat across to sets of the 4. I did it when I felt the need (I am sure some dick will inform me it wasn't all done with perfect maths in mind, but freedom and abstraction through feeling are fun for me). I had fun, I like to play what I want and I will keep trying to improve, please feel free to criticize and comment. Peace

  • Tabla, Turntables, & Invented Instruments Every student at Eagle Rock shares two characteristics: they do not expect to graduate from high school and they want to make a change in their lives. Many of the students come from violent background and communities. A critical intervention is required for them to make a transformation in their lives. For the past three years, a unique course entitled "Tablas + Turntables: Redefining Sound & Re-Imagining Instruments" designed by Robin Sukhadia and Walter Kitundu, has been offered to the students. The class is a unique journey into tabla rhythms of south Asia combined with turntablism and instrument building. Students emerge from the class with a deeper sensitivity and tolerance towards the culture and traditions of another part of the world. The teamwork, self-expression, and focused drumming required to succeed in the class have a direct impact on elevating each student's self confidence and self compassion. When asked what is the impact of the class on Eagle Rock students, Admissions Associate L' Tanya Perkins states, "...Listening to ragas in the morning, touching the tablas, understanding the sacred rituals behind playing and building musical instruments teaches sensitivity and calms our students down so they can face the negativity that our society depicts, the violent communities they come from. This class teaches positivity while conveying the beauty of a culture. This class gives the students an outlet to transform negative energy into something positive..." The ...

  • How to Paint Your Skateboard, Longboard, etc. This is my video on how to paint your board of choice. ENJOY! And check out the sequels: Materials: Skate Deck, Sandpaper, Painters tape, Rustoleum spray paint and clear enamel, Dawn dish gel, Rags or paper towels. My coats are white, then alternating red and silver stripes, then black over top. Steps: 1. First, take the trucks and wheels off. Put tape around the edge of the board so that it protects the griptape from the paint and other substances. Then, you want to sand your deck. Do as much as you feel is needed, whether it be a little to take off the top of the previous coat or a lot to take it down to the bare wood. 2. Next, you wanna put down a base coat of the color you want on the very bottom layer. Let it dry THOROUGHLY. I chose to use white because it fit into my design. Some people put a coat of primer on first, but I don't think it's really necessary. 3. After that, you should decide on a basic design for your skateboard. Don't freak out about it though, a generic plan followed by winging it generally produces a great design. Pick out the colors of spray paint you need and keep them close at hand. 4. Now it's time to start the design. Depending on your plan, this part will vary. On this deck, I chose to do a "splatter" pattern I found the technique for on another video. Put down various colors and lines or shapes for the base coat. Let this dry THOROUGHLY also. 5. Now get some dish gel, right from your kitchen. Now this is the ...
