HMI 7544 Epidemiology-Syphilis Syphilis is a ***ually transmitted disease in which 36000 cases were reported in 2006. It is often called "the great imitator" because the symptoms of often difficult to differentiate from other diseases. There are three stages; the primary, secondary and late and latent stages. Symptoms that include sores rash, headaches, weight loss, fatigue, and sore throat, to name a few, often occur in the primary and secondary stages. During the late and latent stages the symptoms seen in the primary and secondary stages will disappear and an infected person will began to have damage to internal organs potentially resulting in paralysis, gradual blindness and dementia. Although it is most often transmitted through ***ual contact, it can be passed an unborn baby through the mother possibly resulting in infant death. The presence of soles on ***ual organs also increases the chances of transmission of HIV and other ***ually transmitted diseases. Although syphilis has the potential of infecting any age group, our target audience for this PSA will be men and women under 30. The most effective way to prevent transmission during ***ual contact is through the use of condoms (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). Did Henry VIII have syphilis? Historians Robert Hutchinson and Dr Lucy Worsley and medical doctor Catherine Hood examine Henry VIII's ***ual health in order to determine what caused his (and/or his wives') fertility problems. The allegation that Henry VIII had syphilis is a longstanding one, and often backed by the assumption that Henry was ***ual promiscuous, thus able to catch a STD, and that some form of disease on his part caused his first two wives' miscarriages. Furthermore Henry's leg ulcer is sometimes concluded to be an outward sign of his alleged syphilis. The allegation that Henry had syphilis is not widely credited today owing to the lack of contemporary evidence to prove that Henry suffered from this disease (an illness that was known by contemporaries, thus treatments existed for it at that time). Furthermore the allegation that Henry's children had congenital syphilis and this made them allegedly sickly is very hard to support, given that all three children suffered from differing good health. Henry's son Edward was a very healthy child, Mary suffered from bouts of ill-health but lived till her forties and Elizabeth's health was generally good. There is also the question of whether an individual with the type of syphilis predominate in the six***th-century, which could cause a range of ailments from physical deformities to mental health problems, could hide such an illness. Henry VIII was notoriously afraid of illness and went to great lengths to ensure his own good heath and his ...

US apologizes for Tuskegee-like syphilis experiment in Guatemala Secretary of State Hillary Clinton acknowledged and apologized today to the people of Guatemala on behalf of the Government of the United States of America for covertly infecting hundreds of its men with syphilis during a two-year period in the 1940's in order to test treating them with penicillin. The experiment echoes the Tuskegee Experiment which involved about 400 impoverished African-American sharecroppers in Tuskegee, Alabama. This experiment, which lasted for 40 years, involved the observation of men who were already infected with syphilis. However, the scientists never told the men of their condition and didn't treat them with penicillin. Instead, the men appear to simply have been used as test cases to find out what the disease did naturally to an untreated subject. The Guatemala project was uncovered by Susan Reverby, a professor of women's studies at Wellesley College in Massachusetts. It is doubtful the American government would have come forward with this information had Reverby not discovered its existence. Does this make you more or less skeptical of the experiments being possibly conducted by the US government? News Update: US apologizes for syphilis experiment on Guatemalan prisoners "Reuters is reporting that the United States officially apologized on Friday for a 1940s experiment government medical researchers conducted on Guatemalan prison inmates. In the study, researchers knowingly infected prisoners with syphilis and tested the effectiveness of penicillin on the ***ually transmitted disease. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius along with other government officials issued an apology statement. The statement reads, ""The ***ually transmitted disease inoculation study conducted from 1946-1948 in Guatemala was clearly unethical... Although these events occurred more than 64 years ago, we are outraged that such reprehensible research could have occurred under the guise of public health. We deeply regret that it happened, and we apologize to all the individuals who were affected by such abhorrent research practices."" The experiment, which bears similarity to the 1960s Tuskegee study that left African American men untreated for syphilis, was discovered by Susan Reverby, a professor of women's studies at Wellesley College in Massachusetts.
