Sustainability and Resource Depletion: Survival Challenge for the 21st Century Google Tech Talks October 2, 2008 ABSTRACT Award-winning author Richard Heinberg (The Oil Depletion Protocol; Peak Everything) identifies the essential axioms of sustainability and ties them to current economic trends such as the high and volatile prices of oil and other commodities. Species survival will require more than "Sustainability Lite"a vague commitment to more environmentally benign practices, but instead an all-encompassing effort to live within the ultimate resource limits of the planet. Speaker: Richard Heinberg Richard Heinberg, the author of eight books, is a Senior Fellow of the Post Carbon Institute and is widely regarded as one of the worlds foremost Peak Oil educators. He writes a regular column for The Ecologist magazine and has authored scores of essays and articles that have appeared in such journals as The American Prospect, Public Policy Research, Quarterly Review, The Futurist, and European Business Review; and on web sites such as , , , and . Austin Chief Sustainability Officer Lucia Athens Affirms Global Population Reduction Agenda On October 26th, 2010, Michael Shaw of Freedom Advocates and John Bush of Texans for Accountable Government went to Austin City Hall to meet Austin's new Chief Sustainability Officer, Lucia Athens. They asked her about global population reduction as it relates to sustainable development. Shaw: How do you reconcile the idea of unalienable rights with the goals of sustainability including the Global Biodeversity Assessment Report which calls for an 85 percent reduction in the human population? Athens: You know, the population issue I think is one of those really difficult ones to navigate, it's a very difficult topic to navigate in the context of sustainability and issues and programs. Its not an issue that I want to take on. Bush: You don't want to take on population reduction. That's a good thing! Athens: It just doesn't seem like a place that's gonna be a very fruitful place for us to go. I'm much more focused on practical things that we can try to implement in the near term future but also looking at the long term, that's a very divisive topic. Bush: You are aware of the population reduction aspects of the sustainable development push from the international level? Athens: You know its one of many topics. I don't think it's the most important area by any means. Bush: They do at the UN! Athens: I appreciate what you have to say, I think you've got an interesting viewpoint. Part 1 Keynote: International SustainAbility Conference, Robert F. Robert F. Kennedy, Jr President, Waterkeeper Alliance; Clinical Professor and Supervising Attorney Pace University School of Laws Environmental Litigation Clinic, "Our Environmental Destiny." Sustainability, by one definition, means development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the needs of future generations. Other understandings contest this definition, asking whether it is too centered on human needs and marginalizes the needs of other planetary inhabitants. Whatever definition we apply, all meanings of sustainability imply a responsibility to other members of our earth community. We seek the sharing of perspectives on this vital responsibility via a range of formats, including panels, poster sessions, workshops, and roundtables that address the scientific, humanistic, political, economic, and ecological challenges and opportunities of true Sustainability.
Sustainability Sustainability is not going to be easy. Yes, there are those who say the only way is to destroy any sign of an industrialized social structure and begin again. But China, India and many other developing countries are trying to adopt the wasteful way of life favored by most Americans. It's true this won't work long term. We all need to find simpler ways to live and enjoy life. If we don't, we won't be around much longer. We need to change now. I'm reading a new book by Jeffrey Sachs, Common Wealth. Sachs outlines a detailed plan to deal with some of the most serious problems of global warming. In this sobering but optimistic manifesto, Sachs argues that the crises facing humanity are daunting—but solutions to them are readily at hand. Sachs focuses on four challenges for the coming decades: heading off global warming and environmental destruction; stabilizing the world's population; ending extreme poverty; and breaking the political logjams that hinder global cooperation on these issues. The author ***ysis economic data, demographic trends and climate science to create a lucid, accessible and suitably grim exposition of looming problems, but his forte is elaborating concrete, pragmatic, low-cost remedies complete with benchmarks and budgets. Sachs's entire agenda would cost less than 3% of the world's annual income, and he notes that a mere two days' worth of Pentagon spending would fund a comprehensive anti-malaria program for Africa, saving countless lives. PERMACULTURE & PEAK OIL: Beyond 'Sustainability' David Holmgren is co-originator (with Bill Mollison) of the permaculture concept and author of the recent book, PERMACULTURE: Principles and Pathways Beyond Sustainability. He talks about the need to move beyond the lulling hope that 'green tech' breakthroughs will allow world-wide 'sustainable consumption' to the recognition that dwindling oil supplies inevitably mean a mandatory 'energy descent' for human civilization across the planet. He argues that permaculture principles provide the best guide to a peaceful societal 'powering down." .au

Drawing on Jared Diamond's groundbreaking book "Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed", Aaron Wissner takes sustainability to the personal level. What is sustainability? What does it mean for or local future? For more videos, visit: This video comes from "The International Conference on Peak Oil and Climate Change Paths to Sustainability".
