  • Rush - Superconductor Rush is a Canadian rock band originally formed in August 1968, in the Willowdale neighbourhood of Toronto, Ontario, composed of bassist, keyboardist, and lead vocalist Geddy Lee, guitarist Alex Lifeson, and drummer and lyricist Neil Peart. The band and its membership went through a number of re-configurations between 1968 and 1974, achieving their current form when Peart replaced original drummer John Rutsey in July 1974, two weeks before the group's first US tour. Since the release of the band's self-titled debut album in March 1974, Rush has become known for the instrumental skills of its members, complex compositions, and eclectic lyrical motifs drawing heavily on science fiction, fantasy, and libertarian philosophy, as well as addressing humanitarian, social, emotional, and environmental concerns. Musically, Rush's style has evolved over the years, beginning in the vein of blues-inspired heavy metal on their first albums, then encompassing hard rock, progressive rock, and a period dominated by synthesizers. They have influenced various musical artists, including Metallica, and The Smashing Pumpkins as well as progressive metal bands such as Dream Theater, Primus, and Symphony X. Rush has won a number of Juno Awards, and was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1994. Over their careers, the members of Rush have been acknowledged as some of the most proficient players on their respective instruments, with each band member winning several awards in magazine ...
  • First Geo Hot Rod Installation in North America - Marcraft Homes - Coquitlam, BC - HD - Coquitlam Mayor Richard Stewart was on hand for the unveiling of the first residential geothermal "Geo Hot Rod" snow and ice melt system installation in North America on March 9, 2011 at the Marcraft Homes Copper Beech Estates development on Burke Mountain in Coquitlam, BC. "The Geo Hot Rod system being installed at this Coquitlam home is a simple technology that utilizes a superconductor to transfer the Earth's geothermal heat to the surface of the homes driveway clear of snow and ice," said Glen Bereti, of HVAC Systems. Andrea Jauck, Director of Sales and Marketing, Matthew Jauck, Project Coordinator and David Harkinson, Director of Construction for Marcraft Homes were on-site as the mayor viewed a presentation from HVAC Systems, the distributor of the Geo Hot Rod system. "This geothermal system being installed at this Marcraft home is a green initiative, which eliminates consumption of non-renewable fossil fuels used by alternative snow-melt systems," said Andrea Jauck. The geothermal snow and ice melt system uses a superconductor that transfers heat 30000 times faster than silver. This brings the below ground temperatures to the surface to melt ice and snow without any pumps or additional energy. That means no operation costs after installation. • Physics Demo -- Superconductor A bismuth-based superconducting disk sits on a copper base and is immersed in liquid nitrogen. Two small, very strong magnets are placed on top of the superconductor. The magnets levitate due to the expelled magnetic field from the superconductor. Superconductors have the unique property of providing zero resistance for electrical currents when cooled to low enough temperatures. Thus, a current induced in a superconductor will last for an extraordinarily long time. This property also leads to the fact that superconductors will expel all magnetic fields, a phenomenon called the Meissner Effect. As a result of this effect, a magnet approaching a superconductor will "see" an opposite magnet of the same size and field strength as itself, which causes it to levitate. • Aiming to develop the ultimate power cables using new high-temperature superconductors The Kamihara Laboratory is working to discover new high-temperature superconductors, and use them to make superconducting cables. The ordinary metals currently used for cables, such as copper and aluminum, undergo Joule heating when a current flows. This wastes electric power, and reduces the power that can be used. Q."If you generate 10 units of power, you can't carry 10 units via power cables to the user. But if you use superconductors, Joule heating doesn't occur. Those materials have absolutely no resistivity. In that case, if 10 units are generated, the user gets 10 units. The user's device might be a PC, or many other things. Anyway, superconducting power cables enable us to use the total power of electricity generation. It is an extremely good power cable." Today's high-Tc superconductors, such as layered copper oxides and iron-based oxypnictides, are ceramic, and fragile. Therefore, it's an important issue to develop a technology to make a power cable using the oxides. Q."Most high-Tc materials are fragile. They're ceramics. We have to cover those ceramics with malleable "sheath metal", to make it fairly easy to process bending, rolling, and stretch. If superconductors are covered with the sheath metal, they finally become usable as cables. But when these superconductors are covered with metal, a problem arises. The superconductors react with metals, producing undesirable impurity phase. In our research, we aim to reduce amount of the impurity phase. I think it is ...

  • High Temperature Superconductors 1 Video 1 regarding the study of High Temperature Superconductors. Full article and more videos- www.eequalsmcsquared.auckland.ac.nz 'HTS stands for high temperature superconductors which start superconducting when cooled below a threshold temperature. While there's lots of science behind it all, it involves conducting electricity without resistance which ultimately allows us to make more powerful and smaller magnets, motors, generators and other electrical devices. One HTS material, an oxide of bismuth and copper, was discovered by Jeff Tallon and colleagues in 1988. It has an operating temperature of 110 kelvin [about minus 170 degrees C]. Jeff and his team fought for 16 years to obtain a US patent for the material. It was finally issued to them in 2004. It is currently the only HTS material used in long-length wires and is now being used to manufacture very efficient and compact cables, transformers, magnets, generators and motors.'
  • Superconducting Levitation: cooling together * The magnet is located on the superconductor: there is no interaction between them because the superconductor is above the critical temperature. * The magnet is placed on a glass plate so that its magnetic field penetrate the superconductor. * Pouring liquid nitrogen which has a temperature of 77 Kelvins (-196 Celsius). The cooling takes a few minutes. * The glass plate is removed but the magnet continues levitating above the superconductor. * The magnet is lifted up and the superconductor follows after it as if connected by invisible threads. These threads are magnetic field lines frozen-in in the superconductor and pinned there by microscopic inhomogeneities. * Repeating the same experiment. Sometimes the magnetic lines get disconnected, and the superconductor falls down. However the magnetic field remains trapped in the superconductor, and the lines re-connect again when the magnet approaches. * Levitation with slow rotation. Moving a paper sheet demonstrates that there is nothing but magnetic field between the objects. * The superconductor is taken out of the liquid nitrogen followed by its warming up above the critical temperature. The magnet is falling, the levitation is over.

  • Highspeed Superconductors - Magnetic Levitation Superconductors are back! We are proud to present you with detailed Highspeed footage of 2 demonstrations conducted by Michael Szymczak and Marcin Sadowski at the University of Warsaw. The first part shows a magnet suspended in mid-air, but since this is common enough, we've decided to treat it wit ferro-fluid as well. The second part is a simple demonstration of a rotating magnet. Both vids were recorded at the rate of 1050 fps which is 42 times slower than real-time. Special LED lamps were used to light the set to avoid heating the superconductors too quickly. Even so each demonstration lasted no longer than six seconds in real time. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- - visit us for highspeed videos you've never seen before!!!
