First in this video is Galileo's sunspot drawings from 1611 that were done just prior to the Maunder Minimum . But in the last few years they have been counting areas that would have never been counted in the past because they simply would not have been seen .. Astronomers of the time observed only about 50 sunspots for a 30-year period as opposed to a more typical 40-50000 spots during the Maunder Minimum , However the Sunspots that were counted during this period were on average to what was seen in early July 2009 with the observation of Sunspot 1024 . They were very large in structure and were very well defined they just did not occur frequently. But in all reality would many of the Sunspots that have been counted over the last few years really qualify to be true Sunspots.One can clearly see that it was no less of an amazing feat for Galileo to make his observation when you examine the type of telescope he used. Now compare to the modern tools that are used like that of Kitt peak . The Kitt peak solar telescope has a projection table several feet across with a projected solar image size about 2 to 3 feet in diameter. With such a large image, a small pore would be relatively easy to see . But this is in fact skewing and corrupting hundreds of years of collected data.
