It is a visible effect in lots of common materials, such as rubber, marble, wax, or human skin: Have you ever looked at someone´s ear while a light source is behind the ear? it looks translucent due to sss. This glsl shader fakes it using an artist-made texture which defines, for each pixel, the scatter color and the thickness of the object (It would be possible to accurately calculate this thickness in realtime by rendering the zdepth two times from the light pov for front and back faces of the object, and then subtracting the two). Then it computes the lighting using that data, along with light direction, object normals and view direction. It is a very cheap effect, comparable to usual phong lighting w/ normal mapping. Along with sss, in the video you can see ssao (screen space ambient occlusion) and parallax bump mapping. (Sorry for the video quality, i´m not very good at making videos for youtube.)

Subsurface Scattering This is a demonstration of a 3D computer graphics technique called subsurface scattering. When light hits real surfaces like wax, milk, and skin it will bounce around for a while before reflecting back. This technique allows these translucent materials to appear more realistic when we try to recreate them with a computer.

Aquatrad Subsurface Driptube Injection Machine At a time when water conservation is such an important issue, alternate means of irrigation watering needed to be explored. One avenue that is currently being adopted by a number of municipalities around Victoria and other states, is subsurface drip irrigation for various applications. Street scapes and other urban areas as well as sporting facilities and recreational areas are being considered for this form of watering and many organisations are monitoring the success rate of sites using this method. Aquatrad has recently been involved in a sports turf project using subsurface drip and have designed and built a subsurface drip irrigation injection machine specifically for the task. The machine rolls out 4 lines of driptube at a time, injecting them to a pre-set depth below grade. The machine can be adapted to suit a number of subsurface products and row spacings. This particular project was a newly constructed ground, however, the machine can also be used just as effectively on established, grassed, areas.

Within the granular medium, the sandfish lizard executes undulatory locomotion; limbs are held against the body.
