Graphite bombs work by spreading a cloud of extremely fine, chemically-treated carbon filaments over electrical components, causing a short-circuit and a disruption of the electrical supply. The filaments are only a few hundredths of an inch thick and can float in the air like a dense cloud. One engine drives the 4 wheels on the left of the truck while the other engine drives the 4 wheels on the right. The ZIL-135 has 8 wheel drive, but only the front and rear axles are used for steering. It has a maximum cruising range of 500 kilometers. The cab of the ZIL-135 is NBC protected, allowing the rockets to be fired without exposing the crew to possible contaminants. The crew of 4 can emplace or displace the system in 3 minutes. Before firing, stabilizing jacks must be lowered and the blast shield raised to protect the cab and its occupants. Indirect fire aiming is achieved with the use of a PG-1 panoramic telescope.   • Cluster Bombs Cluster munitions or cluster bombs are air-dropped or ground-launched explosive weapons that eject smaller submunitions: a cluster of bomblets. The most common types are designed to kill enemy personnel and destroy vehicles. Other submunition-based weapons designed to destroy runways, electric power transmission lines, disperse chemical or biological weapons, or to scatter land mines have also been produced. Some submunition-based weapons can disperse non-munitions such as leaflets. Because cluster bombs release many small bomblets over a wide area they pose risks to civilians both during attacks and afterwards. During attacks the weapons are prone to indiscriminate effects, especially in populated areas. Unexploded bomblets can kill or maim civilians long after a conflict has ended. Unexploded submunitions are costly to locate and remove. Cluster munitions are prohibited for those nations that ratify the Convention on Cluster Munitions, adopted in Dublin, Ireland in May 2008. The Block I missile contained 950 M74 submunitions. The Block IA missile contained 275 M74 submunitions, this reduction in payload resulted in a greater range. A new system, currently in development, has revamped the missile, with a 500lb warhead and new guidance systems that allow for a near vertical attack vector, allowing for greater use in mountainous or urban terrain. A recent test of this "Block 2" missile was shown on an episode of Future Weapons. The Block II ATACMS missile can also carry a payload of 13 BAT (Brilliant Anti-Tank) munitions.

  • Treaty to Ban Cluster Bombs WONG: An international treaty banning cluster bombs is to be signed next week in Oslo, Norway. More than a hundred nations will sign the ban, amongst them Lebanon whose residents are still victims of cluster bomb explosions to this day. STORY: The Oslo Treaty requires signatories to renounce the use, production, stockpiling and trade in cluster munitions. It also requires states to assist victims and family members affected. Cluster bombs contain up to hundreds of submunitions or "bomblets" that blanket wide areas, making them indiscriminate killers. They are dropped from aircraft or launched by artillery on the ground. But the real horror of cluster munitions, campaigners say, is that the submunitions often fail to detonate on impact, and duds on the ground are easily triggered and maim and kill civilians for decades after they are fired in combat. In South Lebanon, farmers are still being maimed by ammunition used during the Hezbollah war of 2006.   • Starstreak SAM Starstreak is a British short range surface-to-air missile manufactured by Thales Air Defence Limited (formerly Shorts Missile Systems), in Belfast. It is also known as Starstreak HVM where HVM stands for "High Velocity Missile". After launch the missile accelerates to approximately Mach 3.5, at which point it launches three laser beam riding submunitions. The use of three submunitions increases the likelihood of a successful hit on the target. Starstreak has been in service with the British Army since 1997.

  • CBU-97 Sensor Fuzed Weapon Cluster Bomb Developed and produced by Textron Defense Systems, the CBU-97 Sensor Fuzed Weapon is a United States Air Force 1000-pound-class (450 kg) non-guided (freefall) cluster bomb, hence the name CBU (Cluster Bomb Unit). The CBU-97 consists of an SUU-66/B tactical munition dispenser that contains 10 BLU-108 submunitions. Each submunition contains four hockey-puck-shaped sensor-fused projectiles called Skeets. These detect targets, such as tanks, armored personnel carriers, trucks and other support vehicles, and fire an explosively formed penetrator.

  • JP233 Delivery System The JP233 was a British submunition delivery system consisting of a pair of large pods carrying several hundred submunitions designed to attack runways. A Panavia Tornado equipped with the JP233 would fly over a target runway, at which point the pods would dispense their payload. This is an unusual feature of the JP233, as most other submunition delivery systems essentially function as free-falling bombs rather than remain with their aircraft during operation. However, the pods are jettisoned once empty. Each JP-233 was divided into a rear section with 30 SG-357 runway cratering submunitions and the front section carrying 215 HB-876 anti-personnel mines. Both types of submunitions were retarded by small parachutes. The SG-357 weighed 26 kilograms (75 pounds) and was a two-stage munition — a shaped charge in the front blasted a hole in a runway's concrete. A second charge fell into the hole and exploded, producing a large crater. The HB-876 anti-personnel mines would lie scattered on the surface, making rapid repair of the runway nearly impossible. They would explode at preset intervals or if disturbed and were capable of disabling bulldozers or other earth-moving machines. The whole operation was rather frightening to the flight crew, to say the least, since it required the aircraft to fly low, straight and level over an enemy airfield. Smerch was developed in the early 1980s and entered service with the Russian Army in 1988.
