Peter, Bjorn, and John - Nothing To Worry About Dir. Andreas Nilsson, Filip Nilsson / Japan, Sweden / 2009 A glimpse of Japanese Rockabilly subculture in this video for "Nothing to Worry About", the first single by Peter Bjorn and John from their album Living Thing, available from Wichita Recordings. www.wichita- The Band: The Directors: _____ With co-director Filip Nilsson, Andreas documented the meeting of an ageing gang of Japanese rockabilly fanatics called Black Shadow for the PB&J video focussing on Gin, their massively-pompadoured, somewhat terrifying leader. There is a subculture in Tokyo where gangs dance to rockabilly music in this large park, explains commissioner Jill Kaplan. We collaborated with Black Shadow and another gang called Strangers for this video. Everything is real! read more: www.promonews.tv ___
Armada label spotlight: Subculture January 2010 brought an exciting highlight for both Armada Music and Irish number one DJ and producer John O'Callaghan. After working together for more than five years, John decided to take the next step in his career and become a label owner himself. Based on his successful radioshow and kicking off with a brand new compilation series, he started Subculture. A mastermind and perfectionist at heart, John wasn't going to settle with any random label with meaningless releases. Like his radio show, he wanted his imprint to showcase new talents within the trance and tech-trance scene and work on the future of music. Every piece on Subculture is a straight floor-sweeper and mixes the harder side of trance with the genuine, emotional layers of the genre. In the meantime John's Subculture label has all reason to be proud - as it's grown into a breeding ground for all things trancy. Its impressive catalogue includes tracks by the likes of John Askew, Paul Webster, Nick Sentience, Heatbeat and more. John: "It represents trance with a cutting edge, and tech-trance with something more than what I think is floating around now. I will keep on doing my best to root out strictly the best tunes out there. Quality...not quantity." If you're up for a collection of those quality tunes, the official Subculture YouTube channel will surely tickle your fancy. Go check it out now! Tracklist mix: 1. Subculture - I heard a Scream LP (1985) 1/3 I HEARD A SCREAM LP No Core/Fartblossom, 1985 1. All My Love 2. Words I've Never Heard 3. Le Chartier's Principle 4. I Heard a Scream 5. Creatures 6. The Last Time Subculture was invented in 1983 by Chris Phillips and Matt Smith. They didnt know any other punk rock people in Winston-Salem at that time so needless to say they were a duo. Matt already had a guitar and could play a few Chuck Berry songs. Chris became the drummer because he couldnt get the words to Johnny B Goode right. They called the band Two Average White Guys With Big Gonads, or TAWGWBG for short. Matt Started writing songs because it was easier than learning other peoples. He didnt know anything about politics and felt that it would be obnoxious for a 14 year-old to sing about Reagan era America so he chose the only topic he thought he new anything about: girls. This was a bit unusual for a punk band at the time but they didnt know any better. Chris met Bill Huthchins in early 1984. Bill had a bass guitar and could play pretty well so he became the bass player. It was Bill who came up the name Subculture. He saw it spray-painted on a wall in The Whos movie, The Kids are Alright. In late 1984, Matt met a punk rock guy named Clint Buss at school. Clint played guitar and dressed real punk. Clint joined the band. They played at some parties in Winston-Salem and even played in Simon Bob Sinisters house in Durham. Simon Bob later sang in The Ugly Americans and much later in COC Clints dad drove them to the ...
