  • Four-fingered pianist wows Edina, MN, students Pianist Hee Ah Lee, who was born with two fingers on each hand, acknowledged applause during her performance Oct. 17 at Fairview Southdale Hospital. Woodrow Byun, a member of the Edina Rotary, brought Lee on tour from Korea to help inspire people with disabilities. When Hee Ah Lee began to play piano at age 6, she didn't plan on becoming a great pianist. She just wanted to be able to strengthen her hands so that she could hold a pencil. However, despite being born with only two fingers on each hand and complications that required her legs to be amputated below the kneecaps, Lee became a master of the ivories. Her performances include works by Beethoven and Chopin that most people with 10 digits can't play. "It seemed impossible, which is the exact reason we took on the challenge," said her mother, Kapsun Woo. "I felt that if Hee Ah could overcome this challenge, she could face almost anything." Lee was in Minnesota last week and performed for students at Valley View Middle School, and staff and patients at Fairview Southdale Hospital, both in Edina. The 23-year-old from Seoul, South Korea, also gave a full performance at Hopkins High School Sunday, Oct. 19. Lee, known as the "four fingered pianist," has phocomelia, a congenital birth defect in which the upper portion of a limb is absent or poorly developed. In addition to playing piano with four fingers, she uses a special device that allows her to press the piano's pedals down with her knees. She played piano and sang at ...

  • Stanford Students Design Recyclable Laptop with Autodesk Inventor Software A class of Stanford University graduate students have been honored as the Autodesk Inventor of the Month for October for developing a prototype of the recyclable Bloom laptop. The Bloom is the project of a team of students from Stanford and Finland's Aalto University who were given the task to create a recyclable consumer electronics product that makes electronics recycling a simpler, more effective and engaging process for consumers. The students used Autodesk Inventor and Autodesk Inventor Publisher software to help develop and refine the innovative laptop during the school year. Creating 3D digital prototypes of the hardware components inside the laptop aided in creating a readily accessible laptop design that is also easy to disassemble. When separated into different material types — such as plastics, metals and circuitry — the Bloom laptop's modular design makes it easy for consumers to decrease the amount of electronic waste added to landfills. For example, 1.9 to 2.2 million tons of electronics became obsolete in 2005, with only 345000 to 379000 tons being recycled. The Bloom can be disassembled in just two minutes, without tools and in just 10 steps. By comparison, a commercially available laptop takes about 45 minutes to disassemble, requires three separate tools and involves as many as 120 steps.

  • Healthy meals for students and other busy people: 6-pack abs and gain muscle with good nutrition Good nutrition is the secret to both losing fat and gaining muscle, in this video I show you how to eat 6 inexpensive, nutritious meals a day without cooking or shopping. This video is in response to the hundreds of people who have written me saying they knew their nutrition was horrible but felt powerless to improve it because of the schedule constraints of their work, school, or life. Eating 6 small, well balanced meals a day is easy when you know how and once your nutrition is on track you will find it easy to reduce bodyfat to show those 8-pack abs and gain muscle too. The one thing you need to do though is get rid of the idea that food always has to be tasty. Jack LaLane had a great saying "If it tastes good, spit it out!" and its so true. If something is that good then its most likely got too much sugar, salt, fat or artificial flavors. When something tastes really, really good your first thought should be - "whats in this?". Think about what you are eating! If what makes it taste good is the nasty stuff mentioned above then spit it out. Obviously if you are eating a carrot or an apple and it tastes good this doesnt apply. The saying is designed to make you think about everything you eat. If you dont know what is on the list of ingredients and its nutritional content then SPIT IT OUT! Here are the meals I eat during the video: 5:00am coffee and protein powder mixed in water (about 100 cals) 6:30am oatmeal with flax and protein powder (about 400 cals) 9:30am mixed ...

  • Teachers spying on students through laptop webcams Watch my new video, it shows the actual LMSD spying software: Students of this school are being spied upon by teachers, including Assistant Principal Dan Ackerman. In another case Lower Merion School District spied on students even when they were at home. This is the risk every user of proprietary software has to accept. Switch to free software which doesn't have spying capabilities. "They don't even realize we're watching" "According to the filings in Blake J Robbins v Lower Merion School District (PA) et al, the laptops issued to high-school students in the well-heeled Philly suburb have webcams that can be covertly activated by the schools' administrators, who have used this facility to spy on students and even their families. The issue came to light when the Robbins's child was disciplined for "improper behavior in his home" and the Vice Principal used a photo taken by the webcam as evidence. The suit is a class action, brought on behalf of all students issued with these machines. " - Boing Boing The video is from the PBS documentary Digital Nation.
  • Karate student vs Kung Fu student Students of Kyokushinkai karate and drunken kung fu go at it. Please keep your comments respectful, and avoid hollow "x style is better than y style" comments, anyone with a clue knows it comes down to the individual, not the style. If anybody could identify the fighters or where the video is from, I'd appreciate it. Trophy92 sent me a PM saying the first match is karate vs drunken kung fu, and the second is karate vs snake kung fu, if anyone's interested in what kung fu is getting thrashed :p Still open to PMs identifying the fighters (someone did in a comment which I've now forgotten.) Since I keep getting comments to my profile crying about me disabling comments, it isn't because I'm afraid of people with differing views, I'm not quite that pathetic, I've done kung fu before and currently study karate and think they're both great. Comments are disabled so I don't get 200 emails a day with people saying karate or kung fu is gay, or that they're both gay and MMA would destroy them both. I'm mortal, I have a finite amount of time to delete *** emails from idiots who can't read the description box where I ask people not to make useless comments. It is funny when someone calls me a loser for disabling comments on the video but has disabled comments on his profile. And you know what they say about insulting people on the internet.
