Water Strider (Hemiptera: Gerridae) Striding Water striders utilize both their own physical attributes and the physical properties of water to maneuver across the water's surface. Water molecules are polar and attract one another, forming hydrogen bonds to create surface tension. The water strider's small size allows it to take advantage of the cohesive surface. The insect is also anatomically equipped with layers of tiny hairs called microsetae on each of its legs. These hairs create grooves that trap oxygen and allow the strider to float on the surface. As a result, the water strider is buoyant enough to hold 15 times its own body weight. Water striders propel themselves forward by rowing with their middle legs to create hemispherical vortices. These whirling motions of fluid enable the insect to travel up to 100 times their body length per second. This video was produced by Raley White and Laura Summers, under the direction of Dr. Timothy Menzel, for the Invertebrate Behavior Project at Piedmont College.

Stepping in the Bucket, Over Striding, Diving into Pitches - Hitting Tip - The best baseball website on the internet! bit.ly - The Fix from Stats This little hitting tip can help you from stepping in the bucket, help you to not over stride, and help keep you from diving into pitches. What I forgot to mention in the video is that it can also help with hitters whos back foot slides out from behind them in their swing. The weight and rope should be placed in the other batters box for this and the rope tied to the back leg instead of the front leg. Poet Simon Armitage CBE visited the Heritage Centre at Bellingham, Northumberland on Saturday 10 July 2010 as part of his Pennine Way walk. He thrilled the audience with his poetry and good humour. Some wonderful local musicians and singers also went down a treat: Jessica and Martha Carr (fiddle and flute), Donald Clegg ('pome'; 'mouthie' or harmonica), Gwennie Fraser (Northumbrian pipes), Stephen Fry (song, concertina, MC), David McCracken (song), and Pete Stenhouse (guitar). Bellingham couple Dick Shevlin (seen here greeting the poet at the start of the video) and his wife Anne provided hospitality for the troubadour overnight. Terry Bragg (Chairman of the Heritage Centre) presented the poet with a copy of the DVD The Last Sheep Sale -- jointly produced by the Heritage Centre and Northumberland National Park.
