Joint approach to stabilise and rebuild Afghanistan Australias military, police and civilian agencies are taking a joint approach to stabilise and rebuild Afghanistan. Working together, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), AusAID, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and the Australian Defence Force (ADF), are improving security, governance and development in Oruzgan Province. The ADF and Australian Government representatives are delivering projects that are improving the lives of the Afghan people. Some of the projects, which will have a significant impact on the population in Tarin Kowt, include a new waste management facility, a boys primary school and high school, a girls school and numerous water crossings in the Province. Commanding Officer of the recently returned Second Mentoring and Reconstruction Task Force (MRTF-2), Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Hocking, says development is critical to continue to win the enduring support of the population and defeat the insurgency. We have been focused on mentoring the Afghan National Army (ANA) for the past few years and slowly but surely, the ANA is starting to stand on their own, Lieutenant Colonel Hocking said. By improving the security situation, we are creating better conditions for governance, reconstruction and development efforts into areas such as the Mirabad Valley Region. Peter Macfarlane, DFATs Senior Civilian Representative in Oruzgan Province, says the Whole of Government approach is critical to capitalise on the work already done to stabilise the ...

gyro stabilisation test flights First test flights of the gyro stabilisation system, not looking good so far, I may try more later but busy with other projects at the moment. Any quick stick moves caused the aileron gyro to over compensate and wag, probably the same with elevator, could be just a gain thing but any lower gain and there is very little stabilisation.

IMU camera control / stabilisation A simple, example application of the 9DOF MARG sensor array and orientation filter shown in a previous video. When the angles of the camera pan/tilt/roll unit are controlled to be equal to the angles of the sensor, the camera points in the same direction as the sensor. An example use of this would be to have the sensor fixed to a persons head and the camera look in the same direction as the wearer. When the sensor is fixed to base of the the pan/tilt/roll unit and the angles of the unit controlled to be equal to the negative of angles measured by the sensor, the camera direction is stabilised to always be level and pointing in the same direction. This may be useful if the camera is to be mounted on a moving platform; eg a helicopter. Hardware used in video: Sparkfun 6DOF IMU Razor (ADXL335, LPR530 and LPY530) with gyroscope RC HP filters removed, Sparkfun HMC5843 breakout board (low ESR cap replacement), 3 R/C servos, x-io Board with .NET library (www.x-).
Testing arduino helicopter auto-stabilisation Here is a short video of some early testing of the stabilisation of a CCPM helicopter. 6 Degrees of freedom in action. The arduino calculates linear accelerations on the XY and Z axes, and rotation about each axis. User control is stabilised to make flight as smooth as possible, during these tests a couple of crashes occurred off camera, broken blades and a bent feathering spindle. All six degrees of freedom are working and feeding signal into the flight control, all that remains in the system is setting up the gains of each measurement - I hope! Panasonic TM900 - Ely in March (Image Stabilisation Test Video) Testing how good the Hybrid Optical Image Stabilisation and 20x Intelligent Zoom is on the new Panasonic TM900. All shots were taken at 1080p50 (28Mbps) during a quick walk round Ely yesterday lunchtime. Shots were deliberately mostly static rather than panning shots and, obviously for this test video, without a tripod - as the aim is to see just how effective (or not) this latest Panasonic TM900 stabilisation system is. Camera settings mostly as shipped except I adjusted down Sharpness to -1 and Colour to -1 [Note, I've since learn't that these changes may only alter the picture when shooting in Manual mode]. The 20x iZoom shots are labelled and there is one shot of the sundial at 12x (limit of the TM900 Optical Zoom, again labelled). Note that the 30x and higher Digital Zoom function was not used (as all it will do is degrade the image - but it's there if you really want it!). All shots were also taken in iAuto mode (yeah...I know!) but, again, I wanted to see where the camera might under/over-expose, loose focus etc. On the whole it did a pretty good job I think. Note that this camera has excellent manual controls (manual focus ring, peaking, zebras for exposure setting etc.) which I would otherwise typically use - along with a tripod of course ;-) Then, it was a VERY quick/basic edit in Vegas 9E last night in a 1080p25 timeline (each media clip with an Undersampling Rate of 0.5) and rendered out to a 1080p25 file (1.1GB) for web uploading overnight. Battery nuts and Image Stabilisation Was going to meet the Thursday night Kiwibikers (not that they ever show up!) and the bike died, completely, in the middle of a large intersection just round the corner from the meeting place. Had some good luck that evening what with just happening to find another nut on the side of the road that just happened to fit the bolt on my battery terminal which just happened to fall out but just happened to get caught on the bike so it didn't get lost. Very considerate of it. Edit: Wow! #3 - Most Discussed (Today) - Autos & Vehicles - New Zealand #2 - Top Rated (Today) - Autos & Vehicles - New Zealand
Have stabilisation efforts reduced space for humanitarian action? Aid workers need to develop a better understanding of stabilisation efforts in war-affected countries to avoid undermining humanitarian responses, argue Samir Elhawary and Sarah Collinson, researchers at the Overseas Development Institute. Elhawary and Collinson spoke to AlertNet at an event in London last week to launch "States of Fragility", a report examining trends in approaches to armed stabilisation and the challenges humanitarians face in such a context. The report considers whether combined military, political, development and humanitarian stabilisation efforts have reduced "humanitarian space" or, in some situations, might have helped improve aid efforts. -- Julie Mollins, London, 22/10/10
Panasonic HDC-SD60 Image Stabilisation Problem Update: After receiving a replacement all is good. It seems like my HDC-SD60 has developed a fault with the image stabilisation. I turned the video camera on and about 10 seconds into my recording an alarming noise came from the stabilisation gyros. The noise sounded like the gyros were scraping together but what they are probably doing is going bonkers inside and malfunctioning causing the captured video to jitter terribly. The noise stopped after about 20 seconds but now the image stabilisation isn't working correctly, there is now a rapid jitter in both image stabilisation modes as show in this video. Apologies for the wind noise was like a bloody hurricane in my front garden.
Microdrone MD4-200 roll stabilisation upgrade.wmv Once again due to customer demand and requests the team at Aerial Photography Specialists (APS) has produced another add-on for the Microdrone MD4-200 system. APS has created a small and light weight (11g) roll stabilisation system for the various camera options that the MD4-200 can carry. This system helps to improve image stability in windy conditions and its also great for keeping the horizon level. This system can be purchased with plug and play cameras or adapted to existing customer drones if needed. Please visit our web page for more info and availability.
HV30 stabilisation problems part 2 Following on from my previous video about wobble and shake issues with my HV30, here is a semi-scientific side-by-side comparison between the Canon HV30, a Sony HC3, and a Panasonic NV-DS30. To perform these tests I built a dolly out of MDF and odds & ends around the house. It has been specifically designed to have no suspension in order to transmit short, sharp judders up the tripod and into the camera, such as would happen while filming track-side. As can be seen, the HV30 does an appalling job at handling these vibrations, while none of the other cameras I tested even come close! Test #1 was conducted in my back yard and was between the HV30 and the DS30, while test #2 was conducted at Merivale Photo & Video and was between the HV30, Sony HC3. We also tested late model Panasonic and Sony AVCHD cameras; all had excellent stabilisation characteristics, far beyond that of the HV30. Note that the HC3 is of similar age to my HV30 and is also an HDV camera, so the problems aren't inherent to format or sensor type (the DS30 was the only CCD, non-HD camera tested). The conclusion of this is that I have begun the process of getting a refund for my HV30. While I have got a few awesome shots out of it, the hassles have been too much to make it worthwhile.
Optical Image Stabilisation Comparison A55 vs. Sigma 18-250 OS I wanted to test two things: 1) How does the in-body stabilisation (Sony's SSS) perform compared to the in-lens stabilisation (Sigma's OS) 2) How do the stabilisation schemes "sound"? Observations: 1) Sigma's seems to perform better, with the result being more stable, but also more "jumpy", whereas the sensor-based stabilisation is generally a bit shakier, but overall somewhat "smoother" 2) The in-lens stabilisation is virtually inaudible! :-)
Tim Tyler: My camcorder - image stabilisation test An image stabilisation test for my Veho Kuzo camcorder. This is 720p - the highest the device can record at while still using image stabilisation. There are two things to note here. The first is that the image stabilisation appears to have no discernable effect. It appears to be totally useless. The second is that the image distorts and shears with motion in a manner that shows the scanline-based system of capturing the image. The result is poor quality capture of image where the camera is in motion. These results appear to be quite disappointing to me.
DigitalRev Lens Image Stabilisation Video Test Recently, we got a letter from some guy asking us whether Image Stabilisation on a lens really improves the stability of the movies that he wants to make. What's more, he plans to put his HDSLR on the front of his car, so he wants to know how it will perform when used with a reasonably fast moving object. As we don't like to come up with simple "yes" or "no" answers, we've devised a rather not so simple test. Watch the video to find out what happens.
