Wade In the Water/Negro Spiritual - Yolanda Rhodes The combination of Yolanda's storytelling and her powerful singing makes a compelling and entertaining statement. Yolanda Rhodes - singer Bob Gardner - bass, Steve Jones - piano John Strecker - drums "Wade In The Water" is a traditional Negro Spiritual -- a folk song that was born out of the American institution of slavery. "Wade In The Water" and other Negro Spirituals sprang to life on the southern plantations of the United States. These songs spoke of hope, "and the ultimate justice and brotherhood..." of mankind. Most importantly, the descendants of African people sang about strategically escaping the inhumane *** of slavery and about being liberated from the extremely cruel conditions that was imposed upon them For Bookings:

The president of the Mayme A. Clayton Library & Museum in Culver City, California, recently discovered an unusual book in his late mother's extraordinary collection of African-American artifacts. The small, cloth-bound book, titled Slave Songs of the United States, has a publication date of 1867 and contains a collection of 136 plantation songs. Could this be the first book of African-American spirituals ever published? HISTORY DETECTIVES host Wes Cowan visits a music historian in Los Angeles to explore the coded messages and the melodies that laid the foundation of modern blues, gospel and protest songs of future generations. He also meets with Washington, DC's Howard University Choir for a special concert of selections from Slave Songs sung in the traditional style of mid-1800s spirituals. Exploring historical objects and the stories behind them, HISTORY DETECTIVES crisscrosses the country, delving into legends, folklore and personal histories to discover potentially extraordinary objects in everyday American homes, cities and small towns. Watch for the new season of History Detectives premiering June 2009. For more information, visit

Jimmy Castor Bunch - Troglodyte (Cave Man) A master of novelty/disco funk, saxophonist Jimmy Castor started as a doo wop singer in New York. He wrote and recorded I Promise to Remember for Wing With the Juniors in 1956, a group whose roster included Al Casey Jr., Orton Graves, and Johnny Williams. Castor replaced Frankie Lymon in the ***agers in 1957 before switching to sax in 1960. He appeared on several soul-jazz and Afro-Latin sessions and had a solo hit with Hey Leroy, Your Mamas Callin You on Smash in 1966. Castor also played sax on Dave Baby Cortezs hit Rinky Dink. He formed the Jimmy Castor Bunch in 1972 and signed with RCA. Their first release, Its Just Begun, launched Castors next phase with the song Troglodyte (Cave Man). It was a Top Ten R&B and pop smash. Castor continued the trend in 1975 with The Bertha Butt Boogie and later recorded E-Man Boogie, King Kong, Bom Bom, and Amazon. The Castor band included keyboardist/trumpeter Gerry Thomas, bassist Doug Gibson, guitarist Harry Jensen, conga player Lenny Fridle Jr., and drummer Bobby Manigault. Thomas left to join the Fatback band. Castor recorded as a solo performer from 1976 until 1988. He had one of his bigger hits in many years with a 1988 revival of Love Makes a Woman, which paired him with disco diva Joyce Sims. Castor had his own label, Long Distance, in the 80s. ~ Ron Wynn, All Music Guide. Free MP3 Downloads Lyrics: I came from the misty lake. Into this world I walked the paths Of the forests and the trees, To spread this mystery. I hear the colors of the rain. It calls me back and back again. I spoke the words to bear my soul, And swam into an ocean grove. And my wisdom never stared Into the eyes of the only one. I hear the colors of the rain. They call me back and back again. The feeling of flight From earthly dawn and night, The whispers of the silent forms, To see the mystery again. Turn to see yourself In the garden of your eternal dream, To capture each moment in your silver cloud, To reach the answer above and beyond. I hear the colors of the rain. They call me back and back again. Big Bill Broonzy - Three Spirituals In this video I put three spirituals played and sang by Big Bill Broonzy on one of his concerts in Europe in the beginning of 1950s. The spirituals are: "Down by the Riverside", "Swanee River" and "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot". the video footage is a combination of a handful of pictures with a couple of real video fragments. For the last track, which is a very slow spirituals, I had to slow down the video by about 1/4. I think these songs show both humorous and spiritual facets of the personality of this outstanding musician, quite differently from his blues legacy, where he was an undisputed master.
