Motorcycle Road Trip '08, Part 1, Southwestern US Every year I take a big motorcyle road trip. This year I toured the Southwestern United States looking for weird roadside attractions and oddities on my way to Ocean Beach for 10 days of surfing. I took a whole bunch of pictures, obviously, but I also shot some companion video to help remind me later where exactly I was at, etc. So, I spliced all the pictures together with the video to make an quick(ish) slide show... SOUTHWESTERN FIREBALL: Meteor (Sept.21st;2010.) SOUTHWESTERN FIREBALL: Last night (Sept. 21st) around 09:01 pm MDT, a dazzling fireball glided across the skies of New Mexico and west Texas. "We've been getting a lot of calls in the newsroom about an object -- maybe a meteorite -- falling from the sky," says Peter St. Cyr of KOAT TV in Albuquerque. An all-sky camera outside Santa Fe caught the object in flight. "It took 23 seconds to cross the sky and was nearly as bright as the full Moon," says Thomas Ashcraft, who operates the camera. "The fireball made a sonic boom loud enough to be heard inside above fan noise and household din. At first I thought it was thunder." After passing over New Mexico, the fireball apparently continued on to Texas. "At 10:05 pm CDT (9:05 pm MDT) on Sept. 21st we witnessed a slow-moving fireball entering from the west and headed ENE," reports Matthew Byrd of Amarillo. "It was very bright white and shedding white sparks." Remarkably, the first fireball was followed by a second. "Nearly 7 or 8 min later another was sighted directly over Amarillo moving the same direction," adds Byrd. US Space Command reports no satellites or pieces of space junk decaying at the time of the sightings. This was probably a random meteoroid--and maybe two--disintegrating in Earth's atmosphere. Note: In the movie, the stationary light is the full Moon, the moving light is the fireball.

Betty's Spicy Southwestern Black Beans and Rice Recipe In this video, Betty demonstrates how to make Spicy Southwestern Black Beans and Rice. This recipe contains white rice cooked in beef broth and mixed with black beans and sautéed green peppers, onions, garlic, chili powder, and cumin. It gives a flavorful Tex-Mex twist to black beans and rice. Ingredients: (2) 10 ¾-oz. soup cans of beef broth (1) 10 ¾-oz soup can long grain white rice 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil ½ cup chopped onion ½ cup chopped green bell pepper 2 cloves garlic, chopped 14-oz. can black beans, undrained Place (2) 10 ¾-oz. soup cans of beef broth in a medium-sized saucepan that has a lid that fits. Add (1) 10 ¾ -oz. soup can long grain white rice. Bring to a boil over medium heat. Cover, reduce heat to low, and cook 14 minutes, or until broth is absorbed by rice. Meanwhile, place 1 tablespoon olive oil in a deep skillet and add ½ cup chopped onion, ½ cup chopped green pepper, and 2 cloves chopped garlic. Stir together, and place over low heat. Saute until vegetables are soft, stirring occasionally. Add 1 teaspoon chili powder and ½ teaspoon cumin, and stir well. Continue to cook for 3 to 5 minutes to get the flavors combined. Remove from heat. When rice is done, add rice to sautéed mixture, and then add a 14-oz. can of undrained black beans to the skillet. Stir to combine. Return the skillet to the low heat, just to heat the beans all the way through. Pour Spicy Southwestern Black Beans and Rice into an appropriate serving dish and serve ...
