Southwest Airlines Engine Washing Southwest Airlines Co. has signed a multiyear agreement to use an environmentally friendly engine-washing system in an effort to save on fuel and cut carbon emissions. The Dallas-based carrier is using the EcoPower system offered by East Hartford, Conn.-based flight technology firm Pratt & Whitney Global Service Partners. Terms of the deal weren't disclosed, but Pratt & Whitney said Southwest's annual fuel-cost savings could exceed $20 million. The airline also stands to cut 135 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions annually as a result. The arrangement with Pratt & Whitney comes as Southwest, along with the rest of the airline industry, faces record-high fuel prices that have led many to trim capacity and levy fees on travelers. Southwest in the first quarter reported a 63 percent drop in profit to $34 million, partially driven by a 34 percent hike in fuel and oil costs compared with the same period of 2007. Southwest said it is performing regular washes at airports in Orlando, Fla., and Oakland, Calif., where Pratt & Whitney has established new service centers. The EcoPower equipment uses a closed-loop system with atomized water to wash aircraft engines, avoiding contaminant runoff, Pratt & Whitney said. The patented system is considered more effective and faster than traditional engine-washing processes. Pratt & Whitney parent United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX) employs more than 225000 worldwide and in 2007 recorded $4.22 billion in profit on $54.8 billion in ...

The Southwest Boulevard Fire This video may be disturbing for some viewers. It was one of Kansas City's deadliest fires. Six men were killed fighting a massive blaze at a gas station on August 18, 1959. Firefighters ran for their lives when a gas tank exploded sending a huge fireball across Southwest Boulevard. 500 men from both sides of the state line were dispatched to the fire near State Lane Road in Kansas City, Kan. 100 people, mostly firefighters, were injured. The men who died battling the blaze were Capt. George Bartels, Capt. Peter Sirna, firefighter Virgil Sams, firefighter Neal Owen, firefighter Delbert Stone and civilian Francis Toomes. A monument paying tribute to their sacrifice was dedicated on Dec. 18, 1999. KMBC-TV photographer Joe Adams shot this famous footage of the explosions and fire. Veteran Kansas City newsman Charles Gray narrated the report and is seen in front of the KMBC studios at the beginning of the film. Jeremy Hubbard's report on the memorial ceremony in 1999 is also included here.

Southwest Airlines Top 10 of 2010 It feels like an understatement to say that 2010 was an extremely busy year for the Employees of Southwest. From new city openings, new advertising campaigns, and a colorful new plane livery, 2010 was one that will definitely go down in the Southwest history books. Today, we'd like to share with our external audience a video treat that our internal audience gets the opportunity to see weekly, the WNdow Seat. The WNdow seat is a weekly news program that we began early in 2010 as a way to get industry and Company news into the hands of our Employees in a fun, multimedia way. Each week we have different Employee hosts who share news from around the Southwest system. The videos are produced by our in-house Communication and Multimedia teams and are available for Employees to view on our corporate intranet. We thought this week's episode titled, "The WNdow Seat Top 10," would be a fun one to share with our external friends as well. Enjoy!

Southwest Airlines' Colleen Barrett on 'Servant Leadership' Most of the US airline industry is under assault from skyrocketing fuel prices and a sluggish economy, but the message that Southwest Airlines president Colleen Barrett brought to the recent Wharton Leadership Conference was about the importance of treating employees and customers well. Innovative leaders such as Southwest chairman Herb Kelleher and smart management of non-human resources -- especially Southwest's fuel purchasing hedges that have saved the company more than $2 billion -- have certainly helped the airline post profits for 35 consecutive years. But the foundation for all that, she said, has been making the satisfaction of employees and customers the highest priority.
