The river is an important physical and cultural dividing line between North and South China. Chinese living north of the Yangtze speak varying dialects of Mandarin. Most of the provinces south of the river have native Sinitic languages that are unintelligible to Mandarin-speakers. The Yangtze River flows through a diverse array of ecosystems and is itself habitat to several endemic and endangered species including the Yangtze River dolphin, Chinese alligator, and the Yangtze sturgeon. For thousands of years, man has used the river for water, irrigation, sanitation, transportation, industry, boundary-marking and war. • Tangerine Darter Dream Tangerine Darters are found in the upper Tennessee River system. They are one of the largest Percina species, reaching nearly 7" in length, and i think certainly one of our most beautiful darters. Their Latin name is Percina aurantiaca which means "orange colored". Tangerines are very inqusitive while snorkeling and will often approach you when not threatened. Once considered rare, and though listed by the state of Tennessee as a heritage species of special concern, Tangerines are quite common in many locations. The clear waters of the Tellico, Emory, Hiwassee, Little and Little Pigeon offer excellent opportunities to snorkel and observe them along with other fascinating species. "River slick" is a mountain folk term. River slicks can be caught on small hooks and flies and have been used as trout line bait. Who would do that, as they are such a beautiful fish. Please dont, that would certainly be a sin! In the spring the males intensify in color and can develop a bright blue breast. The blue and orange complimenting each other makes for a vivid wide eyed wonder. The highest males will dominate the fastest riffles, so get in and hold on, for the best views! Please help keep our waters clean and healthy. Erosion is the biggest threat, as the resulting siltation smothers out many species food sources and spawning beds.

  • Brown Trout and Bullhead fishes It is my intention to try and film more wild fish and related watercourse wildlife in my local region - although without underwater equipment (unlike ScottyTooHottie!), I will just have to rely on clear, calm water and close access! Not so easy in the nitrate-filled, slow waterways of the Fens! The Brown Trout and Bullhead are specialities of the River Shep where this was filmed - a chalk spring-fed stream in Fowlmere RSPB Nature Reserve that feeds the Rhee branch of the River Cam south of Cambridge, my home city. In recent years, the main watercourse has been deliberately narrowed to increase water flow, oxygenation and prevent siltation. The presence of these fish (and regular reports of otters) prove the scheme seems to be helping. Perhaps the only annoying thing is the new gravel path right next to the stream - they can easily hear you coming!
  • Ganges River Waters Flow Decreases from Pollution For more news visit ☛ or Follow us on Twitter ☛ http And in India the holy River Ganges is now one of the dirtiest in the world. Decreasing water levels, excessive silt deposits and decreased flow are being blamed for the increase in pollution. It might be considered holy by Hindus, but the Ganges River in India is now one of the dirtiest rivers in the world. Due to falling water levels and excessive silting, the flow of the Ganges has slowed. This in turn has increased the pollution in the river. [BD Tripathi, Ganga Basin Authority]: "For the past two decades, we are finding that more than pollution, the Ganges is being affected by the flow of water. When the flow of water is less, then there are many major drawbacks. The first thing that happens due to low flow of water is that siltation begins. Then silt deposits rise, the river shrinks, its carrying capacity decreases, and pollutants and industrial residues increase automatically, even if we control pollution." The head of the Ganga Pollution Research Center blames poorly constructed hydropower projects and dams for the low water levels. [PK Choudhary, Ganga Pollution Research Center]: "In Varanasi, the Ganges water has become totally black in color, and in Allahabad it is brown in color. As the dilution factor and water level decrease, the river will become a mere stream." The cities of Kanpur, Varanasi, Allahabad and Mirzapur are where the river is the most polluted.

  • Watchable Wildlife Site - Stinson Prairie Stinson Prairie displays diverse plant and animal communities ranging from pothole marsh to dry prairie. The site, however, is small and surrounded by agriculture. This has led to problems with siltation, pesticide drift and invasion of weeds. Nevertheless, nearly 200 plant species can be found here including unique plants like Needle grass, Pasque flower, Downy gentian, Rattlesnake master, and others. This site was purchased from Minnie and Emma Stinson in 1969.
  • Windsurfing Bohol this is the first video recording of fla***er windsurfing in the Dauis-Tagbilaran Strait in Bohol, Philippines. Two land-bridges filter out waves from either side of the Strait. One thing though, these two bridges may have created slow water movement in the space in between causing siltation on the water bed. If these land bridges were widened, it may allow faster water quality regeneration in the KofC promenade in Tagbilaran City, which used to be our favorite summer dip before, but now, not even the fish dare.
  • Checking for hellbender eggs at Saint Louis Zoo This "At the Zoo" moment courtesy KMOV-TV. A Missouri resident, the hellbender is the largest species of salamander native to North America. These salamanders are perfectly adapted to their stream habitats with their flattened head and body, short stout legs, long rudder-like tail, and very small, beady eyes. The hellbender populations have been threatened by stream impoundments, pollution and siltation for years, yet seemed to do okay in Missouri and Arkansas. However, over the past 10 years, due to unknown factors, the populations in the Ozark Mountains experienced a sudden decline of 70%. As part of our conservation efforts, we have set up a room in our Herpetarium with a 32-foot-long fast-flowing stream where we can duplicate changing climate conditions, including rainfall, humidity, temperature. In addition to our breeding group of hellbenders, we have also fast-started 136 youngsters from the wild. Some of the youngsters have been reintroduced to the wild. http

  • Rosedale AWTP Ocean Outfall Project (Pt 2) North Shore City Council awarded McConnell Dowell a design and construction contract for the new Rosedale Wastewater Treatment Plant Outfall Project in New Zealand. The new outfall will discharge high quality treated effluent from the plant 2.8 km out to sea into the Rangitoto Channel. MacDow's scope of work consists of the design and construction of a 3 km long (2.4 km onshore and 0.6 km offshore) TBM driven, segment lined tunnel with an internal diameter of 2.8 m. This connects to a 1.6 m diameter, 2 km long HDPE submarine pipeline laid in a dredged trench. The marine pipeline also includes a 300 m long diffuser section. MacDow's scope also includes inlet works and a shaft at the treatment plant. Working with our designers, a detailed sedimentation balance, model and risk ***ysis was prepared to design control measures. The transition riser was designed using CFD-modelling to mitigate siltation in the lowest point of the outfall. Suspended sediment testing, WTP water quality monitoring, and anticipated outfall flow-rates were used to estimate a sediment mass balance. A sedimentation model was used to anticipate sedimentation patterns in the tunnel outfall. The transition riser is a critical part and was designed to improve flushing and to facilitate maintenance operations. Extensive consultation with the North Shore City Council and other stakeholders was carried out prior to construction to fully explain the potential impacts of the project. Through this initial ...
  • The Severn Barrage: Why it will cause major problems for all nearby. This is an unedited recording of an interview I did in 2007 for a documentary on the Severn, before the debate on renewable energy really started to kick in. The batton has been taken up by a number of organisations since then, most notably the Save Our Severn campaign, because of the very real risk of severe degradation of habitat and increased levels of flood risk due to siltation in the estuary. No one in government, or contract contenders for the scheme has ever explained how they are going to solve the silt issue. You only have to see the huge ongoing silt removal effort that is carried out at Sharpness Docks and power station to keep operational to understand the size of the issue. Has anyone factored in the dredging costs to keep the channels open for shipping etc? At the moment, the tide does this naturally. You only have to look at the Bay of Fundy scheme to see the huge problems they have had there with silt in their barrage to see the folly of this 'grand design'. If we're so desperate to have tidal power, what about the Menai Straight as a source to test the technology?
