  • Combat Side Stroke (CSS) with fins, flutter kick There are variations to the Combat Side Stroke, this one utilizes just flutter kick and no dolphin. One aspect of combat side stroke with fins I have found is that you must hold the glide for at least 2.5 seconds upwards to 4 seconds. This allows for maximum use of fins and oxygen uptake. Obviously this is for 'pace' swimming and if you want to go faster then the timing will be a little bit different.

  • UDT/SEAL Combat Side Stroke no fins *Disclaimer* I am not promoting anything but proper technique. I am not part of SEAL/SWCC. If they ask me to corroborate with them then I would be more than happy to. I am doing this out of good faith and for the fact that 90% of the videos on here for CSS are pure junk. Poor technique, lack of being efficient, both of which are paramount to a good combat side stroke.I have experimented with many different techniques and have come up with what is truly a very efficient and balanced combat side stroke. I personally have used this stroke for the last 15 + years while on active duty and it works. It's all about proper mechanics and sound technique. As you can see, the swimmer crossed a 25 Meter pool (not yards) in a little under 22 seconds with a perceived level of exertion of 4-5 on a 10 scale. This pace will lead to a 7:20 500 Meter time at an exertion level of 4-5, so it is perceivable that this swimmer can 'coast' to a 7:20 500 Meter Combat Side Stroke, not bad in my book. If you are having problems with the technique, then check out some of the drills I have posted as well.
