Shunt ShuntA shunt is a device that allows electric current to flow, bypassing any section of the circuit. It is usually a low ohm resistor. For example, shunts are used to change the upper measurement limit of ammeters of the magneto-electric system. The required shunt resistance is calculated by the formula: Where R2 is shunt resistance;• R1 is the resistance of the ammeter;• I is the maximum current that will correspond to the full deflection of the needle of the device;• I 1 is the rated maximum current, measured by the ammeter without the shunt. If the desired change limit far exceeds the rated current of the ammeter, then this current in the denominator can be neglected, and the formula will look like that: For example, to measure currents up to 10 A using an ammeter with 2000 ohms resistance and a maximum current of 50 microamps, you will need a shunt with 0.01 ohms resistance. The use of shunts allows you to expand the limits of the ammeter readings (at the expense of worsening the resolving power and sensitivity of the instrument).Depending on the shunt resistance, a copper wire on the coil, a metal plate, a normalized (standard) resistor with a low tolerance of resistance deviation can be used as this element.

Lorry Pushing Car Footage of a lorry apparently pushing a car sideways along a motorway in Yorkshire, UK. This footage, posted on YouTube, shows the truck travelling along the A1(M) near Wetherby with the Clio trapped under its front bumper. The scene was filmed on a mobile phone by another motorist. At one point someone shouts: "He hasn't seen it." The owners of the lorry, Cheshire-based Arclid Transport, and West Yorkshire Police are investigating the incident. A spokesman from the company said: "There was an incident between a car and one of our vehicles in January. "Since seeing the footage from YouTube we are investigating." He added that he believed the female driver of the Clio had not been injured in the incident. The company said the lorry driver was sent home on Wednesday, when the video emerged on the internet. He added that the accident happened on 13 January and police had investigated, but to date no action had been taken against the lorry driver. A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said officers were aware of the footage but had no further details at present. Texas Instruments' Current Shunt Monitor: Bi-Directional Texas Instruments (TI) INA210, INA211, INA212, INA213, and INA214 are voltage output current shunt monitors that can sense drops across shunts at common-mode voltages from -0.3V to 26V, independent of the supply voltage. Five fixed gains are available: 50V/V, 100V/V, 200V/V, 500V/V, or 1000V/V. The low offset of the Zerø-Drift architecture enables current sensing with maximum drops across the shunt as low as 10mV full-scale. These devices operate from a single +2.7V to +26V power supply, drawing a maximum of 100µA of supply current. All versions are specified over the extended operating temperature range (-40°C to +125°C), and offered in an SC70 package.

West Coast Railway Shunts at Carnforth on 24th May 2009 This is a video showing how the shunting is done to get train in and out of West Coast Railway depot at Carnforth. Video was filmed on 24th May 2009. 1st train used is 47798+47786 with 5Z48 1258d Doncaster West Yard to Carnforth WCR. Train has to be split, then 47798 takes the 1st portion into the depot. After leaving stock in depot, the class 47 then leaves the depot to get the 2nd portion. Finally after the 2nd portion is in the depot, the class 47 departs the depot to get the last coach and 47786. 2nd train then arrives at Carnforth, 57601 with 5Z46 1348d Crewe DRS to Carnforth WCR. Here the train is split and the same movements are then carried out as the same as the first train. The layout at Carnforth for the shunt move is really straight forward. 1. The train enters the goods loop behind the station. 2. Guard splits the train (due to length of F&M siding). 3. 1st portion draws forward into the F&M siding. 4. Then once in the F&M Siding, train reverses into the WCR depot. 5.Once stock in the WCR depot the loco will depart the depot into F&M siding. Then back into the goods loop for the 2nd portion. Moves 3 and 4 repeated for the 2nd portion.

The Big Shunt at the Gwili (Part 1) 02/07/2010 I was privileged today to film two large shunts at the Gwili Railway in Carmarthenshire. This video covers journey aboard D2178 from Bronwydd Arms, followed by the shunt at Llwyfan Cerrig (Stone Platform) during the morning, when coaches of various kinds had to be shunted around to allow the recently repaired Class 117 DMU Power car W51347 to be re-united with it's set, and the lines two vintage four wheeled coached to enter the workshops for further renovation work to be carried out. I travelled up in the line's Class 03 Shunter D2178 in the capable hands of the Railways Chairman Peter Nicholas. Whilst these movements are essential on preserved railways, they are rarely seen, so I hope you enjoy this insight. Part two of the Major Shunt at the unused Southern end of the line will follow.

SPRINGWATER PARK MODEL RAILWAY LAYOUT SHUNTS SOME CLIPS OF SHUNTING TRAINS ON MY MODERN IMAGE OO GAUGE LAYOUT.

Using a current shunt to monitor current flow through my motorcycle's battery I've gone through a couple batteries on my '95 VFR750 recently, so I've been wondering if it's just a coincidence or if I have other problems. The regulator/rectifier seems to be charging the battery fine, starting at close to 14V at idle, and quickly maxing out at 14.8V when revved just a little. So the output voltage is neither too high nor too low, at least whenever I've checked. At present, I'm thinking either my starter gets sticky at times and exceeds the CCA rating of the battery (180A), or something is happening during rides that causes the R/R output to be too low. Neither is easy to catch, so installed a 50A/75mV current shunt on the negative terminal of the battery to monitor whether the battery is being charged or discharged. I had the shunt installed differently earlier so that I was measuring current flow to the bike (sourcing from the battery and/or R/R), so I was able to gather a few figures on total current draw (not just in or out of the battery): * Headlights take around 9A to run. * Cruising around took about 12-14A. Turn signals and brake lights would add 2-3A to this load. Higher RPMs would push current draw toward 14A, I assume to run the spark coils. * The starter would usually spike 100-150A briefly at the start of the crank. * If I cranked the starter extra long, even after the bike had started, I would see a draw of around 30A. After moving the shunt inline with the negative terminal of the battery, I noted a few other figures: * Cranking the ...

TI's new high-side current shunt and power monitor INA209 Texas Instruments' (TI) INA209 is a high-side current shunt and power monitor with an I2C interface. The INA209 monitors both shunt drop and shunt bus voltage. A programmable calibration value, combined with an internal multiplier, enables direct readouts in amperes. An additional multiplying register calculates power in watts. The INA209 features two separate, onboard watchdog capabilities: a warning comparator and an over-limit comparator. The warning comparator is useful for monitoring lower warning limits and incorporates a user-defined delay. The over-limit comparator assists with monitoring upper limitsthat could require immediate system shutdown. The INA209 also includes an ***og-to-digital converter (ADC) comparator and a programmable digital-to-***og converter (DAC) that combine to provide the fastest possible responses to current overload conditions. The INA209 can be used together with hot swap controllers that already use a current sense resistor. The INA209 full-scale range can be selected to be either within the hot-swap controller sense limits, or wide enough to include them. The INA209 senses across shunts on buses that can vary from 0V to 26V. The device uses a single +3V to +5.5V supply, drawing a maximum of 1.5mA of supply current. It is specified for operation from -25°C to +85°C.
