Rotifer Rotifera Fossil range: Eocene - Recent Rotaria Rotaria Scientific classification Domain: Eukarya Kingdom: Animalia Subkingdom: Eumetazoa Superphylum: Platyzoa Phylum: Rotifera Cuvier, 1798 Classes Monogononta Digononta Seisonidea The rotifers, or rotifaers, make up a phylum of microscopic and near-microscopic pseudocoelomate animals. They were first described by Rev. John Harris in 1696 and other forms were described by Anton van Leeuwenhoek in 1703. Most rotifers are around 0.1-0.5 mm long (although their size can range from 50μm to over 2 millimeters) , and are common in freshwater environments throughout the world with a few sal***er species. Some rotifers are free swimming and truly planktonic, others move by inchworming along the substrate, and some are sessile, living inside tubes or gelatinous holdfasts that are attached to a substrate. About 25 species are colonial (eg, Sinantherina semibullata), either sessile or planktonic. Rotifers play an important part of the freshwater zooplankton, being a major foodsource and with many species also contributing to decompositioning of soil. These are single celled organisms that attach to twigs, rocks etc in the aquatic environment and feed by sweeping food particles from the water with beating, hair-like cilia. These are all freshwater species. Despite being sessile they are surprisingly active. Species include: Vorticella (0:12 & 1:16), Stentor (0:50), Vaginicola (1:00). Some clips are faster than normal speed.

Vocal Fold Polyp Part I: Intraoperative Assessment Examination under anaesthesia (EUA) is an important step prior to diagnostic or therapeutic intervention of a laryngeal lesion. This is aided by the advancement in high power microscopy and endoscopic technology which allows its detail anatomy to be visually ***ysed. Assessment of a vocal fold polyp includes its general appearance, site and extent of involvement, pedicle attachment (sessile of pedunculated), vessel feeder (if obvious), and presence of opposite vocal fold reaction (usually mild thickening). Additional palpation by using microsurgical probing instrument is usually performed to find out thickened or scarred areas. This video shows a benign (non-cancerous) double-headed right vocal fold polyp with a relatively sessile base. There was thickened epithelium surrounding its base best seen when the polyp lifted upward. Vocal fold spreader and triangular forceps were used for assessment of the vocal fold polyp in this patient.

The combined vertical and horizontal vibrations can induce a controlled motion of a sessile supported (water) drop. The vibration frequencies are the same in x, y, z directions, and fixed here to 70 Hz. The drop is of order one millimeter in radius. The liquid is pure water or fluorescein solution. The substrate is made of a piece of PDMS elastomer. The motion of a supported water droplet is remotely controlled using a joystick. Both up, down, right and left motions are controlled. The substrate is made of a PDMS elastomer and the water droplet has an equilibrium wetting angle around 100 degrees. It is possible to drive the droplet to a target deposited on the substrate. The target is a dye powder (fluorescein) deposited on the upper right of the substrate. Note that the used of vibrations enhanced the mixing of the powder within the droplet.
