Digital Scale Strain Gauge Weight Sensor We took a $20 digital scale from Target and hooked it up to an amplifier and a microcontroller. This video outlines taking apart the scale, wiring it to the amplifier, and the code, as well as an overview of the concepts behind strain gauges and Wheatstone bridges. There's a demo of two live scale apps written in Python near the end of the video. For the source code or more information about our microcontroller kits, go to

Hall Sensor Spinner This is an electronically spun "top" that uses a Hall Effect Sensor to trigger the electromagnet. The sensor sends a small signal to a transistor everytime the south pole of the rotor magnet passes by. The transistor then turns on for an instant and fires the electromagnet that spins the top. I also added a BEMF charging aspect to the circuit to harvest otherwise lost energy.

Automotive Technology | Crank Sensor Operation IMPORTANT: The crank sensor input signal is the most important signal in a modern vehicle. Without it the engine will not start. The crank sensor measures crankshaft position and rate of change. The ECM then synchronizes this signal to the CAM sensor and determines injection pulse, timing, fuel delivery, idle speed and everything else needed to run the engine. Automotive Technology | Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor Explains the Fuel Rail Pressure OBD-2 Scanner Parameter. The fuel rail pressure sensor is used by the ECM to control the fuel pump motor speed. In an effort to protect the fuel lump electric motor, a fuel rail pressure sensor and software modules are employed. At slower or cruising speeds there's little need for large fuel consumption, so the fuel pump voltage and speed are reduced. The end result is a FP that lasts longer. See it here; how it works and how to test it. (note: Weallow all schools and training institutions to use our software free of charge, so long as it is not sold to others. O2 Sensor Basics This will be the beginning of a series that I'm going to do on computer controlled systems. I've had quite a bit of response to the check engine light video and I think this is the next logical step. I've covered the basic operation of an O2 or oxygen sensor as the basis for closed loop operation. This will probably not be the last time I cover information on O2 sensors, there is soo much more to these than meets the eye. As always you can visit me at Stay Dirty ETCG

LEDs as sensors! This project uses very simple off-the-shelf high-brightness red LEDs. The theory is that each and every LED (even the standard ones) act as capacitors when it's connected backwards, and the speed at which it discharges depends by the light it "sees". Therefore, timing the discharge one can calculate how much light was there in the first place. A quicker way is to simply calculate the voltage drop provided by the LED when it's disconnected, which is what I am doing. The two bright LEDs are alternating between forward bias (emitting), reverse bias (charging) and high impedance (discharging). The ADC is triggered shortly after putting them into hi-Z mode, and uses a 1.5 V reference generated by an LM317. MCU: ATmega8 running at 8 MHz internal oscillator); binary size: 534 bytes.

Automotive Technology | Knock Sensor Explains the Knock Sensor Operation and Testing. The Knock sensor is a actual microphone screwed into the engine block. It is tuned to listen to the exact frequency of an engine knock, which is a high frequency ping. A failing knock sensor will cause all sorts of problems to engine operation, such as skewed timing controls, loss of performance and power and ever the system going to linp-in mode. Learn how it works and how to test this incredible component. (note: Weallow all schools and training institutions to use our software free of charge, so long as it is not sold to others. How to Make a Wireless Wii Sensor Bar The title explains it all: How to Make a Wireless Wii Sensor Bar. A correction: When I say AA battery in the video, I actually mean AAA battery. Yes, I suck at life, but don't care enough to change it =) If you have any questions, post on the comments and I or someone else should be able to help you. -Also, I am planning on making an IR transmitter with a longer range. I noticed that the range on this sensor bar is only about 10 or so feet; it is really finicky or doesn't work at all beyond that. I'll let you know how that goes.

Automotive Technology | Fuel Tank Level Sensor The Fuel Level sensor sends a voltage signal to the ECM as a measure of the fuel level inside the tank. Without this signal the vehicle will not pass inspections and the EVAP system will not run its monitor. The ECM also use this sensor to actuate other components, such as purge, fuel pump and in some cases EGR.

Sensor Fusion on Android Devices: A Revolution in Motion Processing Google Tech Talk August 2, 2010 ABSTRACT Presented by David Sachs. Gyroscopes, accelerometers, and compasses are increasingly prevalent in mainstream consumer electronics. Applications of these sensors include user interface, augmented reality, gaming, image stabilization, and navigation. This talk will demonstrate how all three sensor types work separately and in conjunction on a modified Android handset running a modified sensor API, then explain how algorithms are used to enable a multitude of applications. Application developers who wish to make sense of rotational motion must master Euler angles, rotation matrices, and quaternions. Under the hood, sensor fusion algorithms must be used in order to create responsive, accurate, and low noise descriptions of motion. Reducing sensing errors involves compensating for temperature changes, magnetic disturbances, and sharp accelerations. Some of these algorithms must run at a very high rate and with very precise timing, which makes them difficult to implement within low-power real-time operating systems. Within Android specifically, this involves modifying the sensor manager, introducing new APIs, and partitioning motion processing tasks. David Sachs began developing motion processing systems as a graduate student at the MIT Media Lab. His research there led him to InvenSense, where he continues this work with MEMS inertial sensors used in products such as the Nintendo Wii Motion Plus. David's designs incorporate gyroscopes ...
