  • The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill Revisited: Seaweeds at Port Fourchon LA Two months since their previous visit, Suzanne Fredericq, William Schmidt and Shana Callais from the Biology Department at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (biology.louisiana.edu ) revisited the oil spill-impacted Fourchon Beach in Port Fourchon, Louisiana (Lafourche Parish) on July 27, 2010 ( ). They were joined by Olga Camacho and media artist Christina McPhee ( ). As was the case on May 27th, the offshore specimens of the brown seaweed Sargassum fluitans found in the drift were extensively coated with oil. The nearshore algae consisted exclusively of Ulva growing on outcroppings in the sand or on brick walls and rocks. The red alga Bangia fuscopurpurea, common on May 27th, was absent. Oil droplets and tar balls can be seen on the beach at low tide, on the hard booms and rocks, or trapped among the Sargassum. Hesco Baskets filled with sand are seen on the beach. After our algal collecting, the booties and gloves provided by the extensive Hazmat team were decontaminated. Many thanks to Bob Erikson, BP Liaison at the Port Fourchon Operations Center; Jason Lombard, US Coast Guard; Patrick Murzyn, operations manager, Dalton and Josh Bradley; Mario and the Hazmat team, for granting us clearance to access the E and W Fourchon Beach "hot" zones and for logistical help to collect nearshore seaweeds on July 27, 2010, Filming by S. Fredericq and W. Schmidt. Editing by SF

  • PS22 Chorus "SEAWEED SONG" Passion Pit ps22 After the band Passion Pit was awesome enough to invite us to sing on their first full length CD Manners, we felt it a fitting tribute to sing one of their songs on its entirety. We decided to go with "Seaweed Song" which is the closing track of their album. Allie on the solo is absolutely breathtaking as usual! The kids had nothing to do with this song on the CD, but they did contribute background vocals to 3 other songs on that album, including Little Secrets, The Reeling, and Let Your Love Grow Tall. In this video, the kids are singing the song for the too cool for words, Sway Calloway!! And if you notice the little camera jump after the first verse, that's because unfortunately the camera wasn't on for it in the full version. I had to paste in an outtake of an incomplete version in order to make it whole. This song was featured in an MTV story which you can see here And major huge props to Allie for what might be my favorite solo of hers this year. She KILLS this. Chills every time.
