Gulf Oil Spill Sea Water Sample Explodes When Tested for Toxicity In this video, WKRG News 5 investigates the toxicity levels of local public beaches that have been populated with people swimming and children playing in the water in Alabama. Their search ends with some explosive results. WKRG teams up with Bob Naman, an ***ytical chemist with almost 30 years in the field. Naman tested WKRG's various samples for petroleum, and said he expected to find no more than 5 parts per million (ppm). Instead, Naman finds results that far exceed his expectations: 16 ppm from waters at Katrina Key, and 29 ppm at Orange Beach. The most shocking results came from a sample of water collected near a boom at Dauphin Island Marina. When Naman combined the sample with an organic solvent that separates the oil from the water, which he did for all the other samples as well, it exploded in his lab, breaking the container and destroying the sample in the process. Naman thinks the reaction was caused by the presence of methane gas or Corexit, the dispersant that BP has been using in the Gulf.

Our unit is the 5-15 model from Aquatech. Other companies such as Whisper make similar units which are also acceptable to use. The components of the filtration unit include the box, the motor, the impeller, the intake tube, the sponge filter and the biofiber cartridge. The biofiber cartridge provides surface area for growth of beneficial bacteria. It is left in place except when we place a Coralline Booster plate into the filter box to seed the tank with coralline algae spores. The sponge filter removes particulates from the seawater. It should be replaced on a monthly basis. The carbon (activated charcoal) pellets remove dissolved organic matter such as organic dyes from the seawater. The intake tube has been painted with Krylon Patriot Blue paint to match the background of the tank. We aim to keep the background as free of distractions as possible. The filter box is mounted on the rim of the tank and filled with seawater before being plugged in. As noted in the directions that came with the unit, a simple drip loop is formed with the power cord to prevent seawater getting to the electrical outlet. The seawater cascading into the tank forms minor turbulence which creates air bubbles. These bubbles help oxygenate the seawater. Alvin Smith, the inventor of Searaser said: "It is really only a bicycle pump with a float on it. As this pump goes up and down it sucks sea water and pumps sea water out, purely through the action of the waves." Nano Lagoon (8): Instant Ocean Here we discuss mixing artificial seawater (Instant Ocean Sea Salts) to add to the Nano Lagoon tank. We use a 10-gallon sized box of Instant Ocean bought from Petco in Kona for $9.40. We mix tap water with Instant Ocean salt in a clean 5-gallon bucket, about 3 gallons at a time, to make artificial seawater. For each gallon of seawater desired we use 1.5 cups of Instant Ocean. We use a milk jug or some other water container of known volume to measure the tap water accurately. Next we fill the Nano Lagoon tank with mixed Instant Ocean seawater. Nano Lagoon (10): Temp and Salinity We discuss salinity, specific gravity and temperature maintenance in the Nano Lagoon reef aquarium. Salinity Salinity and specific gravity are related measures of how "salty" the seawater is. We use a simple plastic hydrometer to measure these levels. Our Instant Ocean Hydrometer cost about $9.00 at Wal-Mart. We begin by filling the hydrometer with tap water, and using a pencil or stiff wire to carefully knock any air bubbles off the indicator arm. The salinity should read "0" and the specific gravity should read "1.00." Next, we discard the tap water and fill the hydrometer with seawater from our Nano Lagoon. The salinity should be about 33 ppt (parts per thousand). Specific gravity should be about 1.024 units. If we are careful to keep the seawater level constant in our Nano Lagoon with daily additions of tap water as needed, the salinity will not vary much and can essentially be ignored. Nevertheless we should check this parameter twice a month with the hydrometer, just to be sure. If the salinity and specific gravity get too low, it means that the seawater in our Nano Lagoon is not salty enough. In that case we use seawater (instead of tap water) for our daily additions of makeup water, checking each day with the hyrometer until the salinity is back to 33 ppt.
