Body Fur Sculpin This is a little pattern that's easy to tie, and holds it's profile in the water nicely and is easy to cast on nearly any size rod. If there are sculpins in a river near you that you fish on a regular basis, have a few of these in the colors of the bottom of that drainage - typically Olive, Grey, Black, or Tan. The star of this pattern is clearly the body fur, in a standard size for this pattern - but you can get it in Magnum for Pike and Muskie patterns (or for trout if you're crazy like us).

Japanese Fluvial Sculpin Japanese Fluvial Sculpins, Cottus pollux, can be found in the upper streams throughout Japan. Both anadromous and landlocked forms are known. They feed on insects, crustaceans, worms, and small fish. Despite their size, up to 15 cm in length, they have been vital protein source for mountain villagers without easy access to meat and seafood. Due to the habitat loss, they're classified as "endangered" thus its fishing is strictly regulated in some areas. This footage was shot at Sagamigawa Fureai Kagakukan in Kanagawa prefecture. This specimen seemed attracted to my finger movement while videotaping.

Arctic Sculpin waits in ambush - 600 nautical miles from the North Pole, a hidden predator lies in wait for its prey. This fish is a form of sculpin, a relatively common type of fish found in these freezing waters. They usually hunt other fish and crustaceans by lying in wait, camouflaged amongst the surrounding algae by their markings, and by remaining still on large, modified fins. With a sudden lunge careless prey is engulfed by a large mouth. Wonderful markings are revealed in a closeup view of this Arctic hunter.
