Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada Established as a city in 1906, Saskatoon is Saskatchewan's largest city. Known today as "The City of the Bridges," much of the city's appeal comes from the river running through it, capped with a network of trails, promenades and parks. A busy hub of commerce and industry, and home to many high tech and mining companies, Saskatoon is a cultural oasis with professional and amateur theatre groups and art galleries, and where history and agricultural bounty are celebrated through festivals and public displays.

Classic Track: A Little Bit South of Saskatoon (Sonny James) TheDemise of Original Country Music Original Country Music (OCM) is a type of music that has a unique sound and style with a blend of musical forms originally found in the Southern United States. It evolved from folk music, gospel music and old-time or hillbilly music in the 1920s. The term country music began to surface in the 1940s when the earlier term hillbilly music was considered degrading. Currently it is referred to as original country music (coined by Ray Price), thereby distinguishing it from the current pop oriented sound. Traditional artists had a distinctive sound, a sort of brand that made them easily identifiable from their peers. Hank Williams, Ray Price, Merle Haggard, Conway Twitty, George Jones, Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, Kitty Wells and Patsy Cline all had distinguishable voices as did their peers. The music was presented in a heartfelt and professional manner. The industry fostered respect and it was exemplified by the method the artists presented themselves on and off stage. There were no faded or torn jeans, unmatched apparel or exposed cleavage. The Grand Ole Opry had stringent rules that not only governed the aforementioned, but also the type of musical instruments allowed on stage. Until the mid-1950s, the Opry didnt allow drums on stage and initially drums were placed back stage behind curtains. By the early-1990s, Opry executives loosened the rules regarding onstage presentations and today it appears they have little involvement in that ...
Saskatoon Speaks The City of Saskatoon is very pleased to officially launch the Community Visioning project Saskatoon Speaks. It is time to start thinking about what Saskatoon will look like in 50 years, and share your thoughts about how you want to shape the future of our city. Saskatoon Speaks wants to find out what residents value and want to preserve in our city, and what they want to improve and strive for as Saskatoon continues to grow. Conversations throughout the city will gather information about what the whole community wants for the future. These conversations will take place at city summits, through roundtable discussions, and online with the use of social media tools such as Twitter, Flickr, YouTube and Facebook. These conversations will help shape a vision for Saskatoon's future and develop into more focused discussions as the visioning process develops and the core issues are revealed. For more information on the project and to get involved please go to:
BARRY HOTEL Saskatoon SK Canada in 2008 Barry Hotel (1913) - In 1911, the Butler Hotel was lifted and moved down the street to make room for a newer, more prestigious hotel. The Barry Hotel opened on August 1, 1913 and was named after its owner, Robert J. Barry. During the recession of 1915, Barry lost his hotel to the bank. A deadly fire gutted the interior of the building in 1946, after which the hotel was restored. The hotel was managed by a variety of owners, and eventually became lodging for long-term, low income tenants. Now 95 years old !
