Roundabout with separate cycle path in the Netherlands To make junctions safer many roundabouts were created. In this video you can see how drivers and cyclists interact on a Dutch roundabout with a separate cycle path. The cyclists have the right of way. There is no separate law for that. Cyclists have priority simply because they are on the roundabout and the drivers enter and leave the roundabout. Traffic on the roundabout has the right of way so that is the cyclists. Special is that the cyclists can go two ways on the cycle path of the roundabout. That took some getting used to by drivers. This example is in the city of 's-Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands. See this in Google's street view: Another roundabout in the same city can be seen in this video:

Modern Roundabouts - A Safer Choice - FHWA-SA-10-023.wmv The USDOT's Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has identified modern roundabout intersections as one of nine proven life-saving roadway safety strategies. Modern roundabouts are not only safer than traditional signalized and stop-controlled intersections, where appropriate and properly designed, roundabouts operate more efficiently, often have lower life cycle costs, and result in increased fuel efficiency. So what is a roundabout? A roundabout is a circular intersection. Traffic flows counter-clockwise around a center island. Entering traffic yields to circulating traffic in the roundabout. Channelized approaches using splitter islands deflect traffic as it enters the intersection, slowing speeds. While the vast majority of roundabouts are single lane, one-quarter of the roundabouts in the US have two lanes, which also provide safety benefits. Roundabouts with up to three lanes have been successfully built. Mini-roundabouts can be used in low-speed urban environments in lieu of a stop sign or traffic signal.

Roundabout by Yes Reuploaded thanks to a tip from scunnewman. Thanks! From Wikipedia: "Roundabout" is the opening track for the 1971 album Fragile by British progressive rock band Yes. The song was written by singer Jon Anderson and guitarist Steve Howe. In January 1972, an edited version of the song was released as a single with "Long Distance Runaround" on the B-side. "Roundabout" has become one of the best-known songs by Yes. Live versions of the song are found on the albums Yessongs (1973), Keys to Ascension (1996), House of Yes: Live from House of Blues (2000), and Live at Montreux 2003 (2007). The Yessongs version was released as a single in 1974.[1] An acoustic arrangement of "Roundabout" was recorded for The Ultimate Yes: 35th Anniversary Collection, released in 2003. The single was one of the band's biggest hits in the United States, peaking at #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 (then called the Pop Singles Chart).[2] The single version of the song was edited down to 3:27 for American pop radio airplay, although many stations played the full version of the song. "Roundabout" peaked at #22 on the Dutch Top 40.[3] Anderson has said that the song's cryptic lyrics simply came to him while driving to the studio one early morning. This explains the lyric "Call it morning driving through the sound and even in the valley". [citation needed] Howe's use of octave harmonics on the acoustic guitar introduction of the song and the instrumental break in the middle, plucking four notes that compose an ...

View the full 8-minute educational video that was developed to help you understand how to drive a roundabout. Remember these 2 important rules of using a roundabout: ALWAYS Yield and Stay in your lane! State Law requires motorists to yield to pedestrians waiting to cross at the crosswalk, just like they are to yield to cars in the circulating portion of the roadway.

FHWA Mini-Roundabouts Informational Video The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has sponsored a research project, entitled "Field Testing, Marketing, and Crash ***yses for Mini-Roundabouts," Contract No. DTFH61-09-C-00027. We are actively recruiting willing agencies to identify suitable sites and implement this low cost treatment for evaluation. Compared to a conventional roundabout, the mini-roundabout features a much smaller inscribed diameter, on the order of 50 to 80 ft, and a relatively small circular central island (eg, 16 ft to 45 ft diameter) that is traversable. It is suitable for urban and suburban intersections of 2-lane roads with low truck volume and lower speed, and can handle traffic up to 1600 vph (all approaches combined). Mini-roundabouts are designed to fit within existing travelway boundaries. A detailed marketing video and brochure on mini-roundabouts are available for download and can be freely distributed to interested agencies. The FHWA contract provides resource to conduct comprehensive evaluation of the following safety and operational effectiveness of mini-roundabouts: actual approach and circulating vehicular speeds, traffic operations, driver behavior, vehicle-vehicle conflicts, pedestrian and bicyclist accommodation, and before/after crash ***yses. We expect to work closely with participating agencies to provide technical support related to the implementation of mini-roundabouts. If you are interested in participating in this study, need additional information, or desire a ...

How roundabouts work Traffic congestion and motor vehicle crashes are widespread problems, especially in urban areas. Roundabouts, used in place of stop signs and traffic signals, are a type of circular intersection that can significantly improve traffic flow and safety. Where roundabouts have been installed, motor vehicle crashes have declined by about 40 percent, and those involving injuries have been reduced by about 80 percent. Crash reductions are accompanied by significant improvements in traffic flow, thus reducing vehicle delays, fuel consumption, and air pollution. More information at

Swings and Roundabouts - Original Click the following link for better audio: Another original song. This is the first of two collaborations with an extremely talented Swedish musician called "Ulf Pettersson". He's been in the music biz for a good few years now, and is currently a part of a Swedish band called "Galleon". This song is called "Swings and roundabouts". Ulf has written many instrumentals, and this was originally one of those. When I first heard it, I imagined vocals over the top, so I set to work on it, and this is the result. Again, this is not on the "Sight Or Sound" album. The lyrics are as follows. ------------------ Swings and roundabouts ------------------ Do I want to be alone. 'cause it looks so good from here. I've been on the other side. I know how it looks from there. I know I wanted to be here. Do I want to leave my home. Do I really want to be free. I'll just stand there. I can't make my mind up. It's the same as it's always been. Swings and roundabouts play on my mind and I don't know which way to go It's the hardest decision to make. On the greener grass I see my life going fast and I don't know. If I want it to go slow. Do I really want to throw everything away. Do I want to be free of the little things I hate. I've been on the other side. I can't make my mind up. It's just the same as it's always been. Swings and roundabouts play on my mind and I don't know which way to go It's the hardest decision to make. On the greener grass I see my life going fast and I don ...

Modern Roundabout Time Lapse Hamilton Ontario This is a time lapse of a roundabout in Hamilton, Ontario (thanks to the live cam available at www.roundabouts.ca). It went from 16 and is condensed into 10 minutes. Enjoy! Modern roundabouts, when compared to traffic lights and stop signs, have less delays, higher capacity, safer for cars and pedestrians(up to 90-100% reduction in fatal accidents), no Vegas style lighting from traffic lights all over the place, allows for a much smoother traffic flow where stopping rarely happens because it eliminates the hurry up and wait system (traffic lights promote aggressive driving), much more beautiful to look at, and allow for narrower roads to hold higher volumes of traffic because the intersections are now much more efficient. Check out my other videos including a slower version of this one!

Long Beach, CA Traffic Circle League of American Bicyclists certified traffic cycling instructors demonstrate how to traverse a traffic circle in Long Beach, CA. The video shows cyclists acting as drivers of vehicles by controlling the entry lanes and exit lanes from multiple directions. The instructors traversed the circle safely at very low speed in the10-11 mph range and also at higher speeds. To safely traverse the circle, cyclists must integrate with motor traffic, and enter it, and exit it, in the same way as other vehicle drivers. You can find instructors and classes in your state to teach you how to act as a driver at the education area of the League website:

Roundabouts of Carroll County MD Roundabouts in Carroll County Currently, in Carroll County there are 8 roundabout traffic circles that citizens will encounter while driving through the county. A roundabout is a circular flowing road created to reduce traffic accidents. The State of Maryland first began looking into roundabouts in the early 90's after seeing the success of this type of traffic control across seas in the United Kingdom. Traffic circles have been around since 1905, but in the United Kingdom they found that allowing traffic to yield as they approach the circle would alleviate accidents. The first roundabout in Maryland was constructed in Howard County at MD 94 and MD 144 after there was a high rate of accidents found at that intersection. By the year 2000 only one police reported incident was found in that year. The average annual rate of crashes at intersections with newly built roundabouts has fallen 70% with an 80% decrease in injury related crashes. Cut to John Concannon- Introduction and History There are five reasons why roundabouts are used in MD.
