Rats 01, Behavior of Rodents http The best-known rat species are the black rat (Rattus rattus) and the brown rat(Rattus norvegicus). The group is generally known as the Old World rats or true rats, and originated in Asia. Rats are bigger than most Old World mice, which are their relatives, but seldom weigh over 500 grams (1.1 lb) in the wild. The term "rat" is also used in the names of other small mammals which are not true rats. Examples include the North American pack rat, a number of species loosely called kangaroo rats, and others. Rats such as the bandicoot rat(Bandicota bengalensis) are murine rodents related to true rats, but are not members of the genus Rattus. Male rats are called bucks, unmated females are called does, pregnant or parent females are called dams, and infants are called kittens or pups. A group of rats is either referred to as a pack or a mischief.
Rodent Control: Mouse and Rat Poison Rodent baits, also known as mouse poison, rat poison or rodenticides, offer an economical and efficient approach to controlling rodent populations. Rodenticides come in either pellets or blocks. Bait packets are useful as they keep the poison away from you while placing the poison in the proper location. Also, rodents must gnaw through the covering, therefore you can determine whether there was rodent activity involved with the bait. Pellet baits and place packs are prone to being carried away and stored in different locations. For this reason, the baits can come in contact with pets and children. Placing the place packs in nests or burrows is encouraged in order to control large populations of rodents. Block baits come in a unique shape that's designed to provide rodents with an attractive gnawing item. Typically, block baits are nailed to a piece of wood in order to prevent it from being carried away and allow you to monitor whether it has been gnawed or is still intact. In most cases, it makes little sense to evenly place baits in a room if the rodent activity is located in one or two specific areas. When used properly, mouse poison should not harm pets or children, but it is important to remember that it could harm wildlife and children. Be sure to take extra precautions against accidental poisons. Also, remember, poisoned rodents may die anywhere; they may die in an inconvenient location. However, most of the time, poisoned rodents succumb to the ...

Rosy Rodents! Who says rodents can't be cute? Here's a picture collection of some really rosy rodents!
How to Find Mice and Rodents in Your House Identifying where rodents are located in your home involves several different techniques. First begin by trying to identify the type of rodent problem you have. The house mouse is dusty gray in color and usually 2.5-4 inches long. Its nesting areas include cluttered areas such as closets or garages and areas behind appliances. They eat cereals, grains, meats and seeds. The Norway rat is grayish-brown in color and normally 7-10 inches in length. Its nesting areas include burrows in soil, sewers and basements, and the lower areas of buildings. Their diet includes cereals, grains, meats, seeds, ***roaches, fruits and shrimp. Roof rats are black to brownish-gray and typically 7-10 inches long. The roof rat nests in attics, false ceilings, dead fronds of palm trees and upper portions of buildings. Their diet consists of fruits, berries, meats, seeds, vegetables and eggs. Start with a good inspection to determine which type of rodent is in your home and where they are nesting. Fecal pellets are the best sign that you have an infestation. Even a small population of mice can produce a large amount of droppings in a short time. Fresh droppings are dark in color and soft to touch. After three days, they'll harden and lose color. The age of the droppings tells you if your rodent problem is current. Recent gnawing may also be evidence of a current rodent infestation. Pathways are evident in infestations. Rodents use the same pathways from their nest to your home, for their food ...

Rodent Readiness Webinar by John Barcay John Barcay provides information about common rodents, and how to control their affect on your food service business.
Rodent Prevention Using UltraSonic Repellents Ultrasonic repellents are a new type of technology that emits high frequency sound waves that have been found to effectively repel rodents from affected areas. Humans and pets are not able to hear these sound waves. The sound waves are non-repetitive and sound like a jack hammer to mice. One of the sounds the ultrasonic repellents emit is the same frequency as a dominant male mouse. Male mice are very territorial and the sound of a dominant rodent will discourage others from inhabiting a territory. Rodents are nocturnal, so placing your UltraSonic repellent in the correct location is key. To do this, find the place the rodents are coming in by investigating pathways for tracks, nests, gnaw marks and droppings. Next, plug the repellent into an outlet in the middle of an open room where it is not blocked by furniture. The soundwaves cannot travel through walls or furniture, so keeping the device in an open space is key to its success. The sound waves are deflected by hard surfaces and absorbed by soft surfaces. Therefore, areas like kitchens, garages and basements allow the ultrasound to bounce around. In order to prevent rodents from entering your house, it is best to allow the ultrasound waves to run across a doorway or entrance. Additionally, remember that Ultrasonic repellents will work in the square footage they are placed. If you place it in a 10x10 room, it will work just as well in a 20x20 room. However, placing multiple repellents in one area can ...

The World's First Surfing Mice - The Radical Rodents You will not believe your eyes !!! Hello we are the Radical Rodents, the coolest and hippest mice in the world. We are all mad keen surfers and as far as we know are the only rodents in the world that surf, which would make us the world's smallest surfers. Our names are Chopsticks, Bunsen, Harry & Curly and we have been surfing for over 3 years. We love living here up in sunny Queensland because we get to surf most of the year as the water is warm and the weather is mild. Also there are lots of stinking rich folk with massive boats that deliver the waves which we long to ride. We mainly surf in rivers and estuarys as we are only very tiny, but as you will see we get some very nice waves indeed and on the weekends when the boats are out it is very consistent. To all you brave mice out there at home who think this sounds like a groovy idea, please do not try this. We are trained proffessionals and have endured a lengthy process learning how to swim and how to balance on a board. All the team is in our last season of surfing as we are all getting old and as mice we live for approx 3-4 years. We have already started showing some of our offspring the ropes and Bunsen's son Junior has already caught a few and will be joining the team soon. The new generation are as keen as mustard and we all look forward to seeing them take over the reins so we can retire. Anyway sit back and enjoy the clip, i think you will be pleasently suprised at our talent, you will be sure to get the ...

Owls to tackle rodents in South Africa The South African city of Johannesburg has found a new way to fight its growing rat problem, bringing in owls to tackle the rodents. Rats will aid their fellow rodents in times of stress Is altruism something that's unique to primates? Neuroscientists Peggy Mason and Inbal Ben-Ami Bartal decided to find out, using rats. What they discovered is these rodents will help each other escape from locked cages. They will even share their favorite food with rats. According to Scientific American [ ]: "Mason and Bartal placed pairs of rats in Plexiglass pens. One rat was trapped in a cage in the middle of the pen, whereas the other rat was free to run around. Most free rats circled their imprisoned peer, gnawing at the cage and sticking their paws, noses and whiskers through any openings. After a week of trial and error, 23 of the 30 rats in the experiment learned to open the cage and free their peers by head-butting the cage door or leaning their full weight against the door until it tipped over. (The door could only be opened from the outside.) At first the rats were startled by the noise of the toppling door. Eventually, however, they stopped showing surprise, which suggests that they fully intended to push the door aside. Further, the rodents showed no interest in opening empty cages or in those containing toy rats, indicating that a break out was their genuine goal. In this first set of experiments, most rats seemed quite willing to help their peers, but Mason wanted to give them a tougher test. She placed rats in a Plexiglass pen with two cages: in one was another rat, in the other was a pile of five milk chocolate chips-a favorite ...
Black Mamba hunting Rodents 01, deadly venomous snake http Black mambas hunts by moving fast with their heads high above the ground, on the constant lookout for potential prey as well as predators. Once prey is detected, the mamba 'freezes' to avoid early detection and continues with a slow but careful approch. When in reach, the snake hurling itself forward, issuing several quick but deadly bites, swiftly killing its prey. If the prey attempts to escape, the black mamba will follow up its initial bite with a series of strikes. Mambas will release larger prey after biting it to avoid being injured, but smaller prey, such as birds and rodents, are held until the prey has died. Mambas sometimes holds off a direct attack on a single prey animal but follows it to its burrow. This technique proves quite successful, due to the fact that the black mamba will take full advantage of the situation and feed not just on a single rat or mouse but kill and devour the entire rodent population of the burrow in a single visit. Black mambas feed mostly on smaller warm blooded mammals, such as rats, mice, hyraxes and even bushbabies. These snakes are agile enough to ambush and catch birds and bats out of the air and do so frequently in trees or near water holes. Mambas do feed occasionally on other reptiles, such as lizards and venomous snakes, including puff adders and cobras. After ingestion, powerful acids digest the prey, sometimes within eight to 12 hours depending on its surrounding temperature. Black Mamba feeding on rodents ...

Rodent/Rat Control Fort Worth, Rodent Elimination in Fort Worth, TX This is what a severe rodent infestation looks like up close. This residential home located in Fort Worth, Texas had rodent droppings literally from one end to the other. As the camera crosses the room, notice where the piles of rodent droppings are located. This indicates rat runways. Because rodents have such poor vision, rats will run along borders and use their whiskers to help navigate where they are going. That's why more of the rodent droppings are located against the walls. Make sure to watch this inspection completely for a nice little surprise at the end. Please give Fort Worth Assassin Exterminating & Pest Control a call at (817) 727-8149 or visit our website at if you have any questions and Thanks for watching.

Barack Obama Upstaged by Scurrying Rodent ! If President Obama thought he heard a squeak of dissent as he announced tough new banking regulations he may have been right. But it was a small rodent rather than a Wall Street fat cat who nearly upstaged the Commander-in-Chief as he spoke in the Rose Garden yesterday. The creature no one is quite sure whether it was a rat or mouse, or possibly a vole broke for cover from a set of bushes to Mr Obamas right, passed directly in front of the presidential podium, and then disappeared into another set of bushes on his left. Last week, as camera crews set up for Mr Obamas statement on the Gulf oil spill, whats believed to have been the same rodent made another dash across the famous garden. The critter would do well to avoid a secound encounter with the President. In June of last year Mr Obama displayed what were widely described as ninja skills when he swatted a fly that interrupted an interview he was doing with CNBC. It is not clear whether the President, who claims to look only to the future, saw the animal, but if he did he showed no reaction.
Victor Pest Rodent Control Traps Using traps for rodent control is an easy, cost-effective way of dealing with a rodent infestation. Trapping mice with snap traps is a reliable way to remove mice and rodents from your home. Rodent control traps, such as the wooden snap trap, not only traps the mouse but also kills the mouse instantly with a kill bar or other mechanism. Snap traps do not contain the mouse in any way as they are constructed with one flat piece of wood and a spring bar. There are other types of rodent control traps which keep odors, dirt and bodily fluids within a box-like structure after trapping the mice. These traps produce death via electrocution with an electric shock. They provide a quick, humane kill and are easy to set up and use. Multi-kill rodent control traps are able to capture one mouse after another. Some traps can hold up to 30 mice at once! There is also the option of using live rodent control traps which do not have any kill mechanisms and allow you to catch and release the mice to a new location. Glue traps are cost-effective options that are extremely easy to use for trapping mice. They even trap scorpions, snakes, spiders and other insects! The most important thing to remember when using rodent control traps is good trap placement. Place your trap near high activity rodent areas. Placing traps every 10 feet may appear to make sense for protecting a room, but is ineffective if mouse activity is located in one small area of your room. The most common ...
