Rhododendron The Rhododendron thrives in Norway in gardens along the coast line, as far north as about Trondheim. This firework of a plant is blooming specially in warmer places, this means that the climate is always perfect in Bergen and Stavanger, but also in places where the microclimate is good enough. The "Svinviks Arboretum" in Møre ( more ) is such a place, in this botanic garden many exotic plants thrive, and it is known for the Rhododendron blossom around mid summer ( late june ). Further north the plant will grow in places where the climate is good in winter time also, not too cold, and Trondheim is, I think , more or less the limit north. Hybrids of Rhododendron can have different demands, and the Ringve Botanic Garden,( In the same place as the music instrument museum ) is a good place. Anyway, this unique plant offers a variety of colors and is well worth watching. Enjoy the slideshow ! website:

Bloc Party - Rhododendrons Name: Bloc Party - Rhododendrons Album: A weekend in the city (b-side) It's called Rhododendron, nevermind the actual video, minor mishap on my end:) On the hottest night of the year Lying in a patch of rhododendrons A bottle of whisky under my arm Trying to count a sky full of stars I dream of order, I dream of fleets Of Napoleon in aquamarine He said "Linus put that blanket down You've slammed your door too many times" He said "Linus put that blanket down The world won't wait" Boy, what you gonna do with your life? When I was your age, I was commanding fleets When I was your age, I was soaked in victory And now you can't keep a job and you can't keep a wife What a horrible mess you're gonna make of your life Watched way too many American films To be John Wayne, Brando or James Dean Waiting so long for your wrists to get thick Waiting so long for the next great party So many questions, so little to say You don't need these weights Boy, what you gonna do with your life? So you want to be an artist, want to be a singer Want to be remembered for what you could create So you want to be a cowboy, riding to the distance Never have to listen or answer to anyone So you want to be a boxer, surviving on your instincts Relying on your fists and the quickness of your wit Are you bigger than these buildings and the grey around you? Is your pain more worthy than everybody else? Drunk again in the rhododendrons

Beautiful Flowers - Brueckner Rhododendron Gardens Brueckner Rhododendron Gardens one of Canada's largest and publicly owned collections of rhododendrons. Situated on the north shore of Lake Ontario in the heart of Mississauga, the unique microclimate and massive white pines of the Garden nourish and shelter the rhododendrons which were generously donated by the late Dr. Joseph Brueckner. After years of careful study and experiment-ation in New Brunswick and later in Mississauga, Joe Brueckner launched an extensive breeding program to develop cold-hardy rhododendrons that were tolerant of the eastern Canadian climate but retained the attractive qualities of well-known species of rhodies. Bluenose, Nahanni, Karin Seleger, Toronto, Lionel's Red Shield, Igloo, are some of the 19 registered hybrids that issued from this work. Joe Brueckner was an acknowledged expert on rhododendrons and a recognized hybridizer. His hybrids are still in propagation and are valued plants in North America and several European countries as well as England's famous Exbury Gardens. The extensive notes and correspondence from the Brueckner plant breeding program are housed in the University of Virginia Archives. When Dr. Brueckner donated over 800 azaleas and rhododendrons from his private collection, he included the species and cultivars that form a rare collection in the Garden. The woodland garden setting has been designed to highlight the beauty of the rhododendron / azalea display, and to integrate companion perennials and shrubs in order to ...

Rhododendrons in a Thundershower OK, I have been video taping these Rhododendron plants in my parent's back yard over the past two weeks to show them getting ready to bloom. They bloom and peak right around Memorial Day. Well, the day before that holiday I decided to tape the bloomed plants during a mild thunderstorm. It was recorded on a standard Sony HDR-HC9 (I have versions of the flowers on the modified camera as well) in color with all the sounds heard at the event. With the exception of the first 30 seconds, which was taped a few day earlier, all this footage was shot on the day of the storm. No major edits were done colorwise to the video. The segments in the rain and at the end were done with the white balance set to "outdoor" to warm up the scene a tad as the image was a bit dull and blue-ish in the rain plus I wanted to get that yellow glow in the end segment as the sun was beginning to set. Asides from fades and dissolves, the only edits to the image were a slight gain reduction in the first 30 seconds as well as the last plus some minor audio noise reduction was done in the first segment as well. No in-computer color saturations done at all. The close-up footage is really having the optical zoom maxed out at its 10X setting...................I had no rain protection for the Sony! Special thanks to the Bumble Bee for making a few fly bys!

VanDusen Botanical Garden: The Rhododendron Walk
Rhododendron in a Pot At this time of year many of us think about rhododendrons. Although the different types flower for a long period, it is in May that they really make an impact on gardens across the land. But rhododendrons must have lime-free soil and that can make them tricky for some of us that garden on neutral or limey soils. Planting in the garden is a waste of time and money. If you want, you can make a raised bed and fill that with acid soil but digging a hole in your garden and filling it with acid (ericaceous) compost only works for a while. The water from the surrounding soil will drain in and spread the lime and although you can acidify soil with sulphur chips you really are making life hard for yourself. By far the best way to grow rhododendrons in these circumstances is to put them in pot. Rhododendrons have compact, fibrous roots and grow well in containers. But before you rush out and plant one in your favourite container, consider a few basics. Choose a dwarf rhododendron -- many can get huge but there are lots of compact varieties, such as the 'Bow Bells' I chose, or all the Yakushimanum varieties ('Yaks'). Then think about the pot. It should not be made of concrete or contain lime and must have straight sides so that, when the time comes, you can get the roots out of the pot to move it into the next size. It must also have drainage holes but if it has a saucer which can be topped up with water in summer, that is of benefit. You must use a lime-free compost. There are many ...
